"Imagine a white person saying voting should be fixed so that only a white person could be chosen in the Cotswolds for example. Put up white black green yellow candidates and let the constituents decide Diane Abbott has said Labour should ban white candidates from standing for the party in certain constituencies, in an attempt to increase the number of ethnic minority MPs in parliament. The shadow home secretary suggested it is time for the party to require all potential candidates in select constituencies to be nonwhite, with local Labour parties required to pick a candidate from a minority background." "Rather than talking about curtailing candidates on ethnic grounds how about the onus being put on the parties to nominate people from the very community they represent and come from. There would be no need for this then as hopefully it would occur naturally over time base on the areas demographics. Or is that not sensible enough? " Oh you mean like positive discrimination....but wait isnt that happening now with ALL parties....well maybe not the UKIPERS as they dont really care about those there black or Asian types

"Diane Abbott the gift that keeps on giving. In the very same mould as the Boris one but shes Labour " I just read the article and the quotes. There is nothing wrong. She refers to women shortlist to increase the number of female MPs. Which worked. But not for ethnic minority women. Nowhere I read any nonsense. And I heard her bad interviews and she can put her foot right in it. But here I see no issues.

So I am particular about media and politicians. I don't know why so many trust them because they say they believe in what they do. Farage - old conservative May - Remainer, loves immigration Geert Wilders - old conservative, never left the house for over a decade. So in touch with people. Trump - Billionaire cheat, doesn't care about the people either. Blair - Conservative. New Labour = softer old conservatives I could name Labour members but I'm only familiar with JC as an old friend of our community. I'm not Labour. Waiting for the righty lefty party to appear. I'm a mix of both.

"I care a lot less about the colour of the candidates than I do about their policies. Engaging local folk in politics remains an uphill battle in some areas. " Shortlist is the complete opposite of ban. What if the shortlist only has one name on it?" This is a shortlist of female MPs. It's how they increase female representatives. Or do you believe men and women are treated equally? Plus this is to be a candidate in a constituent.

"Is she not commiting a race crime I wonder she should be prosicuted" Not Diane Abbott but there has been some pretty vile anti semitic comments made at some of the fringe Labour meetings around their conference in Brighton. So much so that the Brighton council leader last night threatened to ban the party over anti semitism. The Equalities and human rights commission has also said the Labour party must prove it is not racist.

"The whole idea is a joke. We had this madness in football a few years ago where it was suggested that when football teams are looking for a new manager then at least one black candidate or person of colour should be put on the shortlist for the job. Nothing to do with their ability to do the job or how good a football manager they are they get selected on the shortlist simply because of the colour of their skin. The idea didn't last long in the football world and the idea was thrown on the scrapheap of history where it belongs. " Your analogy doesn't make sense.

Let's take the football analogy. She isn't saying shortlist a black guy. She's says let's shortlist English players since they're likely to succeed and make a better success in the England team. Or an analogy of the problem. We're hiring coaches that speaks only French for an all English team.

Oh highest candidate gets it? If the latter it cannibalised the other party candidate votes. Then it becomes tactical i.e. putting unfavourable candidates so the popular one gets the most.

" Managers should and always will be selected on talent and ability to do the job here rather than colour of skin and frankly that's the way it should be. " Yes, indeed. Unfortunately, the assumption that this is how things currently work is extremely naive. Stereotypes still exist and influence people even if they don't hold a conscious bias.

"I think there are two types here. You either believe there is discrimination in this country or you believe there is no discrimination. If you believe there is discrimination but dont like Diannes solution. How should we solve the problem. Do we just wait til we all sit around singing come by ya in brotherhood one day in the distant future .Or is action required. " In an ideal world there would be no discrimination or prejudice of any kind. However, I think everyone has some prejudice in them - although not necessarily prejudiced toward the same thing, nor to the same extent. As for discrimination,it does exist, but very much less so than 20/30 years ago. But prejudice and discrimination is not just the domain of white people. I have personally experienced prejudice in this country (and elsewhere) because of my colour, sexuality, religion and politics. I just think those people are particularly sad, bigoted and blinkered. Although to listen to some posters on here they would say that's an impossibility, as those people subjecting me to their prejudices were non-white, gay, non-Christian or non-protestant, and left-wing. (Not all at the same time!). I don't, however, think there should be positive discrimination , but that education of those who do discriminate should come first. I do think it's improving over time from a young age with integration, particularly in schools.

" This very good idea is inspired by the NFL Rooney rule, whereby there must be at least one not white candidate interviewed for a managers position. If you're looking for the best possible candidate, being forced to look outside what you would default to is a pretty good idea. But apparently the FA felt that with the wealth of white talent at their disposal this was something they could do without. Then they hired Sam Allardyce.

If you believe there is discrimination but dont like Diannes solution. How should we solve the problem. In an ideal world there would be no discrimination or prejudice of any kind. The idea didn't last long in the football world and the idea was thrown on the scrapheap of history where it belongs. actually.... this whole post is rubbish! for several reasons i will explain it is actually called the "rooney rule" in the states (because it was championed by pittsburgh steelers owner dan rooney) because in a league that was primarily black... the coaches and head coaches were majority white..... so all that was asked is that on all coaching shortlists... there must be at least one minority candidate, because the theory being because they were not being interviewed and people seeing what talent their was... they were being held back... it has worked in the NFL.... and the NBA.... it is actually being piloted in the EFL for academy jobs and above..... Key figures from the 'Rooney Rule' pilot 123 academy jobs were advertised on the EFL website. The EFL received data relating to 76 of those jobs. 1,497 applications were received for those 76 jobs. In 170 of the applications, the candidate defined their ethnicity as BAME (11%). 18% of the 1,497 applications led to an interview, increasing to 31% for all BAME applicants, and 52% for the 99 applications made by BAME candidates who were suitably qualified for the role. 11 BAME candidates were appointed to the 76 jobs (14%). This is a UK site with majority of UK posters. When the term 'football' is used here it means football as in the FIFA variation, maybe I should have put 'soccer' in the post just for your benefit. American football is always referred to as 'American football' by Brits and no where in my post did I mention the word 'American'. The idea of having shortlists for black managers in the F.A Premier league or the championship or lower football (soccer) divisions died on its arse years ago, because it's a shit idea that no one liked. Football (soccer) Managers should and always will be selected on talent and ability to do the job here rather than colour of skin and frankly that's the way it should be. don't patronise me.. i know exactly what you mean... and the EFL is the english football League... as is the same EFL they advertise on sky!!! I take it you watch the championship... league 1 and league 2.... yep... that EFL!!! http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/40561492 http://www.independent.co.uk/sport/football/football-league/efl-rooney-rule-bame-birmingham-chesterfield-coventry-wolves-a7835256.html" If you knew I meant the EFL then why mention the NFL and the NBA? By your own admission this has not been fully implemented in the EFL the evidence you provided only points to a pilot scheme. It was suggested years ago in the EFL if anyone was serious about it then it would have been fully Implemented by now. It's a shit idea and that's why it's only remained as a pilot scheme.
