Should we expect people to undertake at least rudimentary research before posting?

"Should we expect people to undertake at least rudimentary research before posting?"

i would say yes if you start stating 'facts' to support your point of view..

although with some on here one can point them to the publicly available information and then they will ignore it or denigrate it because they are not open to new information which challenges their opinion..

Well they should know a bit about the subject but people who just copy and paste articles and/or give a reference to some article they have read is very annoying.

You have to read many many articles to research a subject and posters that read the one that gives there point of view are just ignorant, somebody will read this and know I am talking about them.

We all have brains we should use them

Of course fact is better, however it all depends where you get your facts from. I was always under the impression the only fact is the bit of skin between your arse and fanny!

Which would equate to every politician when they open their mouth!

Opinions are one thing, facts are another. Some get confused between the two, while sometimes entertaining it can stop reasoned debate.

Everyone is entitled to an opinion, everyone gets their facts from somewhere. Debate is great, however it soon degenerates into the usual who can shout the person down the best on here.

There is so much rubbish out there, so much spin and rhetoric that facts can be a load of fiction. The current state of mainstream news reporting and institutions funded by what ever political affiliation will distort the political 'facts' to fit their political agenda.

I think it's hilarious when people rubbish research that they haven't actually read. Of course all research can be critically analysed, perhaps faults in their methodologies found, areas for additional research identified, research proposing counter arguments found etc. However, you can't do that if you haven't actually read the research that is being discussed.

If you think it's better to dismiss all research out of hand before even reading it, then I think it is better you do give up!

as i said in the other thread... if you have to create a "moral equivalence" to help yourself sleep at night and defence ya boys in charlottesville.... then have at it and thats on you...

did you ever bother to watch your boys in the hbo documentry then... just wondered if i am talking to someone who actually saw it thru enlightened eyes... and yet what you professed to still not condemn.....

or you going to try and jedi mind trick people like ya boy trump did last night... i just thought it was even funnier when networks broke into his speech and were fact checking him as his lips were still flapping.....

well... i suppose as your boys say..."blood and soil"....

You can as the basis of there argument is all you need to know.

If you have a good broad knowledge of a subject anyway you can work from there,A discussion is not something that takes place with 5 hours between statements while you research the others statement. We are not acadmics we are not writing a thesis on the subject. If you or I was writing a thesis we would not put it here this is a simply discussion forum.

The lack of credible references and understanding here does highlight the risks of power via our form of democracy though.

We should be able to link to articles on the Politics forum. It would cut out, or at least shut down an awful lot of the bullshit.

Without it people post any old shit and can get away without being properly held to account.
