I came across an intersting US public service announcement from 1943. What do you think?

The truth is simple.

In the 19th and until the late 20th century right gave us the KKK, fascism and the nazi's.

In the same period the left gave us weekends, paid holidays, free education, free healthcare, social welfare and pensions.

In the late 20th and so far in the 21st century the right has been dominant and has taken away weekends for many, free higher education for all, much of our healthcare much of our social welfare and much of our pensions (including the pensions we actually saved for).

3 cheers for those who vote for the right...

I really don't think the video is about different approaches to social issues between those to the right of centre of those to the left.

I'm sure myself and CCCL have our differences on many issues but one thing I think we share in common is that the problems we have in our society are not the fault of Jews, Papists, Muslims, Europeans, Americans, Arabs, Asians, Blacks or any other 'other' you care to think of. The problems we have are either mostly or wholly a result of the decisions we choose to make as a democratic society. That's what the video is about, not about left or right of centre. If you can't actually see that then you're probably more a part of the problem than you are a part of the solution.

Codswallop!

The video is about NAZI ideology and how it is very attractive to those who believe they are entitled to take from others if the opportunity presents itself. That is the essence of right wing politics taken to the extreme. Because like it or not right wing politics is based on the premise that there is little or no collective responsibility. That government should be small and regulation should be minimal with the market dominant. Which is all fine until you are the one being targeted.

Bullshit!

I am sure CLCC would agree with me that for probably 99.9999% of humanity our futures are pretty much mapped out for us before we are born! There are obviously some exceptions to this rule but not many. We are lucky to have been born in Britain between the end of WW2 and the late 60's and as a result had many advantages. Do you really think that a baby born here today has those same opportunities unless born into money? Do you think a baby born in Southern Sudan has the same opportunities as one born here? Politics shapes all our lives. Religion shapes the attitudes that breed the politics. Therefore every part of your premise is wrong.

Codswallop & Bullshit? Really? You use those words to describe what I've written and then come out with the ridicules political analysis I've ever seen.

While you are correct that the film focused on Nazism it was actually about how dictators, and in particular dictators of totalitarian regimes, use divisions in society to take control. The film could easily have been made, with only slight difference, 10 years earlier or 10 years later and been about the USSR. (Which, incidentally, you failed to mention in you

To try and argue that the NAZI regime was in favour of small government and light regulation is, that they didn't believe in collective responsibility and were in favour of a free market ecconomy is quite frankly laughable. They were a Totalitarian Regime; that means that they wanted total control of everything, the complete opposite of what you said they supported; everything had to be in service of the State and for the State. In fact the only real difference between the NAZIS and the other Totalitarian Regime around at the time, namely the USSR, was the NAZIS aloud the holding of property and capital by individuals, provided is was used to the benefit of the State, whilst the USSR didn't.

To be frank, to argue that free market liberalism and libertarian attitudes to the size of government and the state, whether you agree with them or not, has anything to do with NAZISM, Fascism or Totalitarianism when they're clearly the complete opposite of both makes you look like the bullshiter and the one talking Codswallop, not me.
