watching this war of words is fascinating... it's like seeing who blocks first

And the irony is that the us got a huge win in the United Nations over the increased sanctions before trump opened his mouth!

They said overnight the plan is to fire some to land "30-40 km" short of Guam

This means a few things

1) it uses one of their shorter more reliable weapons

2) even if it's off target nk can claim the win

3) long enough to prove a point, but not actually threaten.. daring the us to try and shoot it down

4) of the us miss, nk claims the win... if the us do shoot it down, nk prove their point

Kim out trumps trump by basically calling their shot

I think Trump is spoiling for a fight. It makes for a great distraction from his corruption, obstruction of justice and treason problems. In fact I think the only way he can stay in power is through war and he does not care how many lives it costs to stay in power provided his is not one of the lives lost.

The bottom line is Trump is now doing to America what he has been doing to the businesses he has run over decades. Systematically enriched himself by running the businesses into the ground and defrauding their clients and suppliers. The problem is that now his clients and suppliers are the rest of the world and the tools of false accounting and corporate fraud has been replaced with treason and war.

At a point in a developing crisis where the POTUS could and should have shown a semblance of statesmanship whilst being firm in his resolve as a 'leader' of a country being threatened to protect his citizens by someone like Kim, Trump failed..

instead he acted in a similar fashion and gave the NK hierarchy the footage to back up their own propaganda ..

is no one advising him or is he just not listening again..?

I'm guessing they'll wait until NK does attempt to carry out its threat on Guam.

If I was trump now.... I would get out a map and see just how far out us territorial waters go around Guam... it's normally goes out as far as 200km

Because 30 to 40km out is way too close for comfort

I think if you are trump you now almost have to say that if anything lands in us waters... it will perceived to be an act of war...

There was a great political cartoon I saw with Trump and Jong Un facing off, both naked with nukes instead of cocks, comparing size. Pretty accurate.

One thing I was wondering though, If NK do fire at Guam, does that mean that the UK as a part of NATO now get dragged into this dick swinging contest? Would be kind of ironic given Trumps comments on NATO.

It's not automatic, it requires America to invoke article 5 of the NATO treaty, and a unanimous vote of the North Atlantic Council. However its likely that would happen. The only NATO country that has ever invoked article 5 is the US after 9/11

NK has secure territory, they are the ones putting unrelenting pressure and intimidation on SK. . .they do this sheltering under China's umbrella.

I did see an article that said NK understands clearly that toal repression, regardless of economic and social cost, is the only thing keeping their country going and they're p'd off at the west for making them do that instead of leaving them to run tbeir country.

China doesn't want the USA SK etc on their border but will they defend NK militarily snd if so to what extent.

Trump isn't helping and brinksmanship cock swinging isn't the way forward. The only way forward is get China to do the dirty.

The only country to support is the South Koreans to mobilise and go and sort out the North, liberate the suffering masses.

There should be a united front from the United nations to sort the mess out that is the Korean peninsula. But it's not going to happen as the UN are in the pockets of some far more sinister funders and string pullers.

It is not the USA that protects South Korea it's the UN and has been since 1950! And by the way the Korean war never ended, all there has ever been is a ceasefire that has been broken regularly on the orders of the Kims over decades.

Not happy with them gaining nuclear weapons so just have to hope he won't use em..

Let's strip this back and look at it simply.

Kim is the only one testing nukes and missiles.

Kim is the only one threatening a first strike on another countries sovereign soil.

Trump/US have eventually managed to push through (effective?) UN sanctions which China/USSR have not tried to block.

Trump is stating what retaliation may/will happen if Kim strikes first.

China have said that in such a situation they would step back and take a neutral stance.

I see the problem lies with Kim and not with Trump. As POTUS his prime objective is to defend US territory. Any president faced with a first strike from Kim would have no other option. His choice of words and use of twitter may seem provocative....but it is just the method of delivering the same message as any other leader would send.

actually you are normally good morpork.... on this occasion though a lot of what you said is not quite true...

you said kim was the only one testing missiles... not correct... between kims 2 icbm tests, the US actually conducted an icbm test of their own....

with regard to first strike... the US have always reserved the right to first strike if NK didn't comply with sanctions.....

the difference this time is that NK basically called their shot and told people what the plan was....

actually this crisis is all on Trump as the timing is all wrong as the US had gotten a major diplomacy win at the UN with regards to tightening sanctions... china and russia could have abstained or veto'd... they both voted for!

and then trump opened his mouth..... and doubled down.... and doubled down again.... and doubled down again....

the man won't shut up... and even when tillerson has tried to tone it down a level... he still wont shut up!!

Kim's threat to fire at Guam seems to have been as a consequence of the new sanctions.

After that US hands pretty much tied. They have to spell out the consequences.... though, as always a Trump could have chosen his words more wisely!
