So after May came out and said she would be changing the human rights laws if they get in the way of her ability to deal with terrorists (I presume she means, her ability to torture suspects, seeing as the Human Rights Act otherwise doesn't get in the way), it turns out she might have to declare a state of emergency in the UK to do so.

I mean... changing those laws would be a U-turn somewhat of their manifesto pledge to remain a part of the European Court of Human rights.

...which itself is a U-turn on her original plans of dropping out of the ECHR.

Aren't you conservative voters dizzy yet from all these U-turns?

It's perfectly possible to change our human rights laws and still remain in the European Convention of Human Rights. After all, as a founding member, we have been in the ECHR since 1947 but only had The Human Rights act since 1997.

Whether we repeal and replace the Human Rights act only effects where the cases of Human Rights are heard. Currently, under the Human Rights act, most cases of violations of Human Rights can be heard in British courts because the Human Rights act covers most articles of the European Convention. If it is repealed or replaced then those areas no longer covered by British law would simply be dealt with (at much larger cost and inconvenience) by the Convention court in the Hague.

The Human Rights act and it's replacement or repeal is really a bit of a red herring. Far more important is whether we remain in the European Convention of Human Rights or not.

I think it depends entirely on whirch legislation she wants to change,

The EU decleration of human rights as it pertains to britain or the (british) bill of rights 1866.

Nope, definitely not so.

Parliament is sovereign. If parliament decides to reject any law or pass any law they can regardless of any laws passed by previous parliaments...

That is just the way things are, if you don't like it tough, suck it up and move on...

Or overthrow the state and set up and replace it with whatever you feel like...

By the way I am not advocating revolution, I quite like our archaic system, it may not be perfect but it has evolved over time and works most of the time.

I think this is fantastic result! Exactly what I'd hoped for, cant push through hard right wing policies anymore. A bloody nose for an arrogant liar.

Also shows the country is crying out for a centre ground party. If LD's weren't so hapless and tarnished by the coalition they would be in prime position to capitalise.

I believe may wants to change the law regarding civil rights so that she can deport terrorist and sympathisers, this in no way affects peoples natural human rights so who would argue that this unfair in the first place?

Depends on who 'they' define as terrorists. Things like this seem simple solutions but further down the line they come back to haunt us.
