EU terrorist database......the truth?

Revelation on Victoria Derbyshire this morning.

Among the arguments for/against hard/soft brexit the issue of sharing information on terrorists has been brought up. It has been argued by some that we would have less access to information sharing across Europe.

The former head of our Border Force has revealed that there is no such thing. There is no EU wide data base!!

Recent media reports have spoken about the third London terrorist saying he was on an "EU wide watch list ". Apparently it doesn't exist. There are 26 different such databases in individual countries. Some of these are shared on an ad hoc basis with other countries. Many are not!

In or out of EU on whatever terms emerge ....surely there SHOULD be some kind of wider database to inform ALL security services about these people?

so you are saying the part in Mrs maygabe's speech (24th Novemebr 2014) as home secretary where she announces ...

"We made sure, even as we opted out of more than 130 European measures, that we signed up to measures like SIS II, or the second generation Schengen Information System, which will allow us to track foreign fighters and terror suspects."

... was a pack of lies then? if what you say is correct, then she really does need to walk.

The Shengen Information System exists..... but it is, apparently, fragmented. It is not a joined up system. And yes.....we have the same access to it as others in the EU. However it appears it is not just one database.

The problem is that individual countries are not sharing information. Italy had flagged the guy up as a terrorist trying to get to Syria. They didn't arrest him...they didn't pass the info on. He was on an Italian database. Seems that's as far as it went.

Just saying what the recent head of border security said....Im sure he knows what he is on aboit.....check it on i Player. I read it as there SHOULD be a Europe wide data base....but it doesnt work if 26 countries keep their own and dont update it.

That actually doesn't lay the blame on our leaders...past or present. Maybe on the EU? I wasn't trying to score political points....just commenting on how ridiculous the situation seems to be.

Interpol. Europlod and European arrest warrants only work for people who have been charged.... no use for someone who simply arose suspicion.

well either it exists or it doesn't ... so either matey boy from the 'boarder waste of time quango' is lying, mrs maygabe has been lying or you have embellished the story with some theatrically inaccurate words ... and as for iplayer i neither have a tv or a licence so i'm not chasing round to clear up your messy thread tbf ... you go check what he said and come back to the thread and let us now what's going on.

i don't think that is the issue... it is more the fact that in the 7yrs she was home secretary she has basically cut 20,000 police jobs....

What the OP is saying the bod is saying is that the system should work but countries arent sharing the info as they should, a bit like olice forces in one county not sharing info on ciminals with the next county force, a bit like the fbi not sharing with the cia or local county sherif, too many egos

Exactly this......I have not embellished what he said....it's out there on the BBC ....an interview. It will be on i-player for 30 days or so. If someone can't be arsed to check it then no need to call the thread messy. The situation certainly is....and later reports seem to be full of contradictions with each other. The information "sharing" between countries is clearly not working!

Isnt it the police? As one officer said after london they used to know what was going on in their area and now theyre stretched so thin they dont anymore.

Local police are the first line of defence. These arent attacks from abroad, these attacks are being carried out by individuals in the community. If there were more police on the ground then maybe they'd get information or see something that would otherwise slip through the net. And there'd be the manpower to chase up the leads that were given about these attackers.

"The days of the police knowing what's going on on there patch is well gone ever since the Internet and smart phones that's why we need mi5 more than ever . "

I don't quite agree with that. Still a lot of planning happens face to face. I mean the wife/girlfriend of one of the attackers was saying they used to meet in her flat whilst she was out to do planning.

In both the recent attacks multiple community members have said they have reported the perpetrators... so clearly people can see what is going on.

The risk is that we follow down May's current rabbit-hole which is she now wants to further restrict our liberties, make the internet services we use less secure, and set them up for more abuse.

so your opening gambit is to say the border agency reckon that a european wide list (sis 2) does not exist, then you try to alter that by saying it exists but it is not being used properly .... just get your story straight before you start a thread next time

Has no-one mentioned yet that May threatened to pull us out of intelligence sharing with the rest of the EU if she didn't get her way on Brexit?
