Just blew my mind with some common sense on question time:

"For decades we have not focussed on what is it that generates wealth in this country and one of the key things that generates wealth is manufacturing, it's high technology industries, which export, which create high value jobs, which creates productivity. And through those mechanisms we can actually raise wages and we can raise living standards. And we have not had a stratgeic approach for that, which has to be long-term, so it has to be across governments, for a very very long time"

Question Time, 04/05/17 at 38:38 on iplayer.

Less than 60 seconds later the politicians returned to points scoring bollucks. Fuck the election, let's just have this guy as a dictator.

Brilliant solution....if only it were that simple! In the 19th century we dominated the globe for exactly that reason....but look now where all the "high tech" stuff comes from. The smart phones, the computers and robotics.

All outsourced to cheap Chinese or Indian labour. Where is your i-Phone or tablet actually made? Globalisation means products are made where labour is cheapest and most readily available. The profits in the hands of the few at the top.

Sad, but true!

It's not the production jobs we need, it's the engineering design, integration, sales & marketing jobs around that. Any reasonably intelligent person can see enormous future markets in artificial intelligence, personalised medicine and cyber security. But the govenrment does next to fuck all to set the conditions for jobs to flourish in those new industries.
