Thought police are obsolete

The threat of a thought police has often captured the public imagination. But i would propose that the idea is now OBSOLETE. Simply put there's a better way of achieving the same thing.

First create a bunch of bullshit thought paradigms that distract people from logical thinking, nationalism being a prime example. Then make the aforementioned paradigms popular and pour scorn upon people that challenge them (e.g. label them anti-patriotic). Finally, start a bunch of pseduo-intellectual debates that rely on the fundamental assumptions of the bullshit paradigms (e.g. is multiculturalism a force for good?).

By this point the average person will be completely incapable of having enough time and willpower to unpick the nonsense they have grown to accept as conventional wisdom. They will spend their entire life debating red herrings whilst feeling like things are moving forward. Those who can work it out will give up on the masses because it's too frustrating to start every debate from square one.

Ergo, no need for thought police when most people are incapable of thinking what you don't want them to think in the first place.

I think it should be mandatory that everyone spends two weeks on each continent (which the possible exception of antarctica) before they are allowed to vote. It would rid the country of so many of the ridiculous beliefs that get propagated about other people in other countries.

Of course it's feasible, the war in Iraq cost more than the GDP of the UK, there's a stat for the morons who think war is profitable. You need to think how money gets pissed away on stupid shit and then you'd realise how much we actually could allocate to useful shit.

A fantastic idea. I've lived on 3 (Europe, Asia, North America). And visited all bar Antarctica.

At university I was a member of an association called AIESEC that's big aim was to promote world peace. Their method of doing so was having local chapters around the world raise traineeships at local companies that members from other chapters around the world would fill. Ie a global work exchange programme. The thinking being the only way to truly understand another culture is to work there (as opposed to sit on the beach/bar/hotel there).

I doubt you'd assume that the average employee of a FTSE 100 company has the same objectives as the CEO. Nor do their customers have the same objective. So as a minimum there would be three sets of objectives that people in an IS area want. The number of people whose priority is a caliphate I'd estimate at 5%.

"What are the paradigms that you consider bullshit?"

Good question, it's hard to boil it down to just a few high level paradigms because few paradigms are entirely good or bad in their own right. It's much easier to list bullshit ideas people have but those could go down to several root causes.

I think the idea that ISIS is an ideology is patent nonsense. I think it's extremely limiting to think of human beings primarily in terms of the borders they happened to be born within. There's definitely some sort of paradigm that wants to boil every debate down to opposing opinions and deny facts. The idea that everyones opinions are equal. There's this obsession with finding the 'right' answer to a problem when the 'right' answer today could be the 'wrong' answer tomorrow. For some reason the vast majority of the propulation have huge issues with thinking about probability. I even think the need for logical consistency is a bit stupid and pushes people towards extreme positions. The idea that people even know why they think what they think is patently false too so the constant demand for justifications is silly really.

I know i butchered the question, which was a good question, but can you make anything of my response?

Yes. I can. I agree with the public not getting probability and risk. Public misunderstanding of science is a bugbear of mine. I do think everyone should be able to voice their opinions though. That doesn't mean they should necessarily be allowed to act on them! And there definitely needs to be clarity between opinion, reasoned argument based on facts and plain facts.

I'm wary of the thought police. Knowledge should not be a crime. I was taught how to make mustard gas in 1st year uni but that doesn't make me someone bad.

Put it this way, when ISIS comes up then someone says "but how do you fight an idea?". There's so many bullshit premises that they've already accepted to make that statement that i can't even begin to have a sensible conversation with them.

"I think a lot of people have a visceral emotional reaction at times like this that blinds them to rationality."

Indeed and that benefits certain groups against the common good. Look at the number of people who think the simple solution to the complex problem of ISIS is to have more muslims condemn the attacks. As if the real reason IS exists is that the anti-terrorism page on facebook didn't get enough likes.

Here's a thought experiment, imagine you wanted to create ISIS today, from scratch. Realise how difficult it is to find enough people with the right skills and experience, to actually find a way to pay them (yes they get paid because ideas don't have calories) and then to go fight and army and take casualties. Do that thought experiement and you'll quickly see why a few YouTube videos and hate speeches ain't gonna cut the mustard.

So since we've established that we're all enlightened, well travelled and have had a threesome at an AIESEC conference, how do we drag the remaining intellectual neanderthals up to our level?

Better schools, free meals and a free University system?

Possibly with a resurgence in the "educate yourself" culture of the far left in the early 20th century, who built librairies, arranged courses etc.

(Once the truth about Stalin became known in the 50s, my grandad insisted that he'd only been in the Communist party for the free books)

Dont know who geert is.However Richard Dawkins first proposed the concept of a meme.Similar to genes.

A Meme is an idea, behavior, or style that spreads from person to person within a culture". A meme acts as a unit for carrying cultural ideas, symbols, or practices that can be transmitted from one mind to another through writing, speech, gestures, rituals, or other imitable phenomena with a mimicked theme.

Schools and universities are tools of the establishment. Educate yourself has more potential in my opinion. Maybe some sort of system where the best looking girls fuck the most knowledgeable guys instead of the best looking athletes?

"The Selfish Gene" should be compulsory reading for over 16s.

One trick pony with no sense of humor. Watch him on YouTube when he gets asked "if you're so smart, how come you didn't know Mrs Garrison was a guy?"

Not sure you need as sense of humour to write compelling books in the field of genetics.

"The threat of a thought police has often captured the public imagination.

Don't think so, as there would be some exceptions that wouldn't necessarily tow the line that would need policing

I generally don't like people that take themselves too seriously, although i make an exception for Liz. I just think he's a one trick pony who has gotten famous ridiculing strawman arguements and people who would qualify for the intellectual special olympics. He's the academic version of kimbo slice.
