"can someone tell me why it was such a bad idea when proposed by Ed Milliband in the general election 2 years ago... and was slaughtered for it... now Teresa May suggests it may be in the Conservative manifesto this time round.... and the right wing papers love it??" I I didn't use either of them to Cap my energy prices until 2018, I went to green network energy for my own deal

"just bumping this back up since it looks like it will offically be in the manifesto since may was talking about it yesterday..... " I kind of agree with this idea, but doubt that it will actually deliver for the end user. When actually its the lease of your worries, as once the domestic market has been saturated by smart meters you will be a lot more if you want to cook and be warm during peak load hours Off course if you want to save money you can wake your kids up at about 4am have the heating on and cook them a decent full English which with soon be known as as the Brexit.... in the mean time chill your CH4 and get more Mj/m3 or in simpler terms free gas

The only bit I can fathom is the bit about chilling methane to make it denser and hence more energy per volume. I don't understand who and how people would be chilling it. Natural gas is about 70% methane... or are you making some fart joke I'm missing? -Matt

Part of drive to introducing smart meters is the fact that our nationalgrid is creaking at the seams due to an ever increasing demand on the infrastructure. So if you move the demand from peak load hours, by having multiple price bands based on the time of day. You reduce the demand so reducing the need for re-inforcement work to both our gas transmission system and our electric grid network

"Hello Bobbangs, Which is why, I presume, John Macdonald says they will make all education and school meals free, sounds grand to the young but not so good when it has to be paid for. Mr Corbyn keeps saying this is a rich country, he seems to have forgotten that the country has a huge natioal debt. Some companies and individuals are wealthy but that is not the U.K.'s money. The government already spends about £10,000 per head for every man woman and child living here and they want to spend more. Going back to capping electricity prices, it is far more sensible to repeal the climate change act and stop subsidising wind and solar generation. That will make much more a cost effective contribution and hopefully, eventually, increase investment in proper generation systems. Smart meters are not going to do it. " Free education does sound good both for students and parents .Its a vote winner Whats a proper generation system. Coal or nuclear ?.Neither has a real future.

"capping will make little or no difference to your future bills as with the roll out of smart meters the way we are billed will completely change.once everyone has these installed the suppliers will be able to see how much you are using by the minute and so will be able to charge you more during peak demand and less during quiet times .also we are being encouraged to move towards electric/hybrid cars that will need charging and when are people going to be most likely charging them up ? so peak demand may not be when you think it will be " Good comments at least 1 other person in here understands what smart meters are all about, it certainly isn't to the consumer any cash, as you can only make the life change once I.E. turn off appliances on stand by, and thinking about your comments on electric vehicles, as they become the norm off peak is unlikely to remain off peak. And let's not forget the MAMs also want to receive a return on the meters that they have fitted and data they recover on behalf of the shippers

I am all for renewables , in fact I have PV and solar heating in my house ! But the reality is renewables are not even close to being ready to replace Fossil or Nuclear...unfortunately ! So they they will be part of the mix for quite a while still ! One of the reasons that for higher bills is to subsidise renewables like solar or wind ! In Portugal where I live that cost represents almost 25% of the electric bill ! So its time for those subsidies to go !

"can someone tell me why it was such a bad idea when proposed by Ed Milliband in the general election 2 years ago... and was slaughtered for it... now Teresa May suggests it may be in the Conservative manifesto this time round.... and the right wing papers love it??" Because they are dumb cunts who don't understand the most basic principles of business or economics. They are not even good politicians. This was a bad idea when red ed said it and an even worse idea now. It's just symptomatic of politicians who are too stupid and or spineless to actually tackle the root of the problem. The UK energy market structure (enforced by regulation) is non-competitive in nature and all that is really required are the right incentives to enable lower cost production methods to reach consumers without a fecking middleman. Capping the middleman is a bandage on a broken leg.
