If you start with a whopping deficit then debt will keep climbing. It's like getting paid £1500 a month but having minimum debt repayments of £1800 a month. Even if you pay out all of your £1500 salary to service the debt, interest charges ensure it will keep growing. And unlike someone with personal debt, Governments can't go to Stepchange and get interest payments frozen....

" Spiralling debt? You are aware that George Osbourne created more debt in his time as chancellor than every labour government COMBINED? -Matt" Suggest you check again.. Every recent labour government has come in to a stable economy and for all intents wrecked it with absolutely nothing to show for it except a British industry and economy in a worse state for their governance. Fact.. economic growth does not lie. Spend means nothing if the gdp doesn't go up with it.. Fortunately the conservatives have a good track record of growth.. Unfortunately the same is cannot be said of labour.. The conservatives are hated because they had the balls to get rid of loss making services with privatisation where the management has a reason to make the business profitable.. Unpopular but common sense..

I responded that they are incorrect in their assumptions, and correct them. Another poster put a link to actual figures. You then talk about GDP? I don't get it. -Matt

Since 1960 we have had a positive growth in GDP every single year except the following: 1974 - Labour 1975 - Labour 1980 - Cons 1981 - Cons 1991 - Cons 2008 - Labour 2009 - Labour So, especially considering they mainly coincided with major financial crises (well the last one certainly was, the '74 one was oil price / stock market crash), I think it is a bit disingenuous to say the least that conservatives have a better track record than labour. -Matt

"I'm not sure how I'm voting yet as manifestos haven't been published or studied. With zero MPs I'm not expecting ukip to get much coverage or elected differently to recent local elections. " It will be very interesting to see how the manifestos compare to the 2015 ones. Considering May is mainly doing this in order to get out of the commitments from the 2015 manifesto and so that she has a 'mandate' (despite saying she already had one). It will be interesting to see what they all say. So much has changed politically in two years, and I have a feeling that any party could say whatever they wanted in their manifestos and have no qualms in walking away from them the second they are elected. -Matt

I dont want a government which overspends, but we need one which will invest in the country and its citizens so britain doesnt fall behind in the world. I don't see advanced planning and investment coming from the tories.

"Self employed might be a tad more nervous after Hammond's latest quote about the need to raise taxes. 2nd time lucky." That's not exactly what he said though! Phillip Hammond is looking for more "flexibility " regarding tax. The only leader so far pledged to tax increases is Jeremy Corbyn.

"The Tories stupidly pledged not to increase income tax, VAT and national insurance last time. In times of economic uncertainty it does not make sense to tie the chancellor's hands like that. Therefore this pledge will go. It is NOT, as some cretins have stated, the same as saying they WILL go up. " Why say it if he doesn't need to ? They need to raise more tax revenues from the self employed and now the Tories have the opportunity to rewrite the manifesto to justify it.

If he didn't say it, wouldn't he be tying his hands for another 5 years. Tax changes are entirely possible under any government.
