I know on the politics forum you are always going to have a mixture of opinions, but I thought that there was some common ground that we could all agree on. Boy was I wrong. Some people on there are in support of badger baiting (dogs fighting badgers to the death), something that has been illegal in the UK since 1835.

Please tell me that I'm not the only person who finds this barbaric.

The best landing net was back in the 80s. Russ Abbott using Des O'Connor's album and all the fish jumping out the water. I believe it was the Hamlet cigar advert.

Blood sports have a massive following.

At the top end there's the hunten shooten en fishen set who when not out killing stuff for fun like to sit ringside and watch young chaps from the lower orders beating the shit out of each other in boxing rings.

We go from all the way down to the bottom of the barrel where you find the badger baiters, dog fighters, bantam cock fighters, terriers, ferreters and bare knuckle fighters.

There is a reason why course fishing is the largest participation sport in the UK. When it comes down to it we are a very bloodthirsty lot who derive a lot of pleasure in inflicting pain because we can. Just look at how many here get sexual pleasure from inflicting pain (bdsm). Like it or not it is all part of the same thing.

Personally I think all blood sports are outrageous, there are only three justifications for killing any living creature, for food, for protection or prevention of suffering.

Strange though that people accept lamb.

"lamb" is simply a sheep in its first year of life - it has long since been weaned by the time it goes to slaughter - ie, its not a juvenile.

Top end for veal is 7 months average for lamb is 6 to 8 months. Most of the worst excesses of veal farming is gone, but I do prefer my dinner to live on grass in the sunshine for a while at least "

Eat rose veal then. At least the young male cows are eaten instead of being killed and rendered uselessly.

"Do the Spanish still have bullfighting for entertainment?

Yes they do. Was banned in Catalonia for a while but I believe that's been overturned."

So does the EU have minimum animal welfare standards? If not, why not?

Cyprus had an industry harvesting migrant songbirds for food.

Yes...

But animal welfare standards do not apply where there are religious laws governing slaughter (halal and kosher) or if it is a provable tradition (Spain has many, killing bulls and donkeys and even throwing a goat from a church tower).

Such is life"

"Just to be clear.

I dont get involved in the veal industry, its well to cruel for my liking

Just as well, been illegal to raise calves in crates in Europe since 2007... Though they seldom make it outside.

I dont eat Badger, there far too cute and cuddly dont you know!.

Ive eaten hedgehog,i was shown how to by some pikeys years ago, what you do is get some clay, roll them in it and bake them for about two hours, then when you break the clay open it de spines them!

Not very tasty to be honest but easier to catch than a Badger

What if,after cooking your hedgehog, you retained the clay with the spikes in and put pickled onions on the spikes.A bit of a display or somewhere to put your onions in a hedgehog buffet

certainly on some issues and topics i would disagree with him as will others with me and you etc etc..

sometimes the phrase 'step away from the keyboard' is an apt one, take a breather and focus as you do quite well on what is actually said and not something which was probably solely wrote to bait you..

rise above it and move on maybe..

You think it was written to troll, fair enough. Myself, and others dont. Badger baiting does go on, and people get prosecuted for it. If sick boy (maybe the clue is in the name) does go badger

baiting, I hope that he is prosecuted.

Now now, you know naming people in forums is against the rules, ill let you off this time

Im sorry to disappoint you but my name just came from watching the new trainspotting (my favourite character).

Upto now your only slander for insinuating im involved in illegal activities but that aside, i can assure you theres very little if any country folk involved in Badger baiting, we just have better things to do, like long unsociable working hours and quite frankly we leave the blood lust stuff to you townies, weve already had our fill of killing stuff legally
