This will be interesting again.

But what would we gain be separating from the rest of the UK.

I might be wrong but I don't think it will happen.

i think the problem is there are so many hardline tories down they want out... but forget about the consequences for the regions....

mays speech at the scottish tory conference did not help! and when she said that some powers would come back to westminster I did recoil, even from this side of the border...

and the interview where she said there should be a renegoiation of all the regional assemblies because of brexit was a bad move...

for example when they are asked about northern ireland there answer is "don't care"

when asked about the consequence for scotland.. again, don't care....

thats why now i think we should have a federal uk.... where each part has there own autonomy...

i wonder if this will also be the thing that makes may snap and call the early election.....

This is exactly what my father in law wants a federal state.

not quite... she wants to hold the referendum BEFORE Any UK government actually leaves the EU.... so in effect what is going to happen which would be quite smart is that the scottish people will get some better idea of the the "leave" deal will look like than the rest of us will......

Because the terms of Brexit are as yet unknown.

The Scottish government has already put forward compromise proposals of what it would like to see in Brexit but this has so far been ignored.

Interesting and unwelcome effects of Brexit.

Indyref 2 on the way in Scotland

Serious upheaval in N Ireland

What a sorry state of affairs if the vote for change last year unintentionally also breaks up the United Kingdom.

What a legacy for PM May - economic chaos and a break up of the Union and all because she was unwilling to try to carry the country as a whole towards a new future.

You need to remember that the SNP has a huge membership throughout Scotland and that's before people like myself who support the SNP but are not actual members are included.

"The SNP want independence no matter if we were in the EU or not "

Of course they do and if the people of Scotland want independance that's fine but to go on pretending that it is anything to do with staying in the EU is laughable and taking the Scottish people for fools. If they had won the last referendum they would have been out of the EU and still waiting to get back in. (Which wouldn't happen)

the right to self determination as there is nothing united about this kingdom .

it will be a yes vote from me. not a fan of the snp or many of their policies but right now with labour in turmoil we face years of tory rule .

the snp would be finished in their current guise in an independant scotland and our politics would change dramatically . love to see a strong socialist opposition rise from it all

They danger in a snap election here in Scotland the SNP could increase there mp's remember Labour , Tory and Lib Dems are sitting with 1 mp in Scotland could easily lose them to the SNP and the SNP would be in a stronger position than they are now

Mrs May is better to allow a independence referendum to happen and let the Scottish people to decide our future as we made it clear we do not want to leave the EU and single market

The whole point of waiting til then is so that we can make an informed decision.. by then we should know just what are the consequences of a hard brexit ..it may turn out scotland agrees with brexit plan over indy...to sit back not have the choice and follow brexit blindly could be a disaster

It's all about timing. She wants this referendum whilst the UK, and therefore Scotland, is still in.the EU.

If Mrs May makes her wait until after Brexit, then Scotland will be out of the EU.

If you give some reasons for your choice perhaps there could be some debate. At the moment, you just appear to have a down on the SNP.

Lmao the British media ( Sky News ) and the very poor Kay Burley does anyone like her ?

See this is how much the British media are panicking and shitting themselves just saw they are reporting Sky sources says Nicola was pushed into it by Alex Salmond erm did not anyone person hear what she said in her statement.

She clearly said she is still hoping the UK government respect Scotland's wishes to remain part of the EU and full membership of the single market within the UK if they fail to meet that then Nicola has every right to call for a section 30 order and it would be a big mistake for an unelected PM that stand under no manifesto of her own to block another coutnries mandate

"If they want another referendum let them have one this year not wait till 2018/2019 that just makes for more uncertainty. The sooner we all know where we stand the better.

The whole point of waiting til then is so that we can make an informed decision.. by then we should know just what are the consequences of a hard brexit ..it may turn out scotland agrees with brexit plan over indy...to sit back not have the choice and follow brexit blindly could be a disaster

Yes I know that is the point why should Scotland have the best of both worlds. If Scotland want independence vote on it now and accept the result this time.

what a ridiculous statement "

Why Scotland had a vote in 2014 how many do you want?

Here is an interesting question

Lets remind our self's that Theresa May said she would look to have an agreed position with all 4 nations in the UK Scotland has made it clear it does not agree with the UK government position so should Theresa May just ignore Scotland , Wales and N.Ireland do go ahead with it meaning she lied to everyone in the UK ?

So how can Scotland stay in the single market ? They would surely have to pay the EU to be the in the club ?

Why wait for 18 months for a referendum? Surely they have all of the info they need ?

The EU is not going to let the UK have a deal that is anywhere near what we want because they will still want free movement of labour and the UK will say no end of meeting!!

There as so many countries that we can buy from and sell to outside the EU, the EU have out high tariffs on good from outside the Union that they could not be competitive but once out off the EU we can drop tariffs on those goods.

Ive just spent the morning pointing this very conundrum out to people in the Irish unification thread.

The question here is not really that different from what was there.

A county (UK) divided by a very contentious fundemental? issue.

You can see how nationalism will play out on both sides but in reality neither side has the solution to how you unite a divided populace

Well obviously we don't and neither do you! Nobody, at this stage has any idea what the implications of Brexit will be. I'm sitting watching the debate in Parliament at the moment and there is no further clarity on whether or what form any deal with the EU is likely to be.

As I have said before, the Scottish Government have put froward proposals which, to all intents and purposes, have been ignored or not addressed. Indyref 2 is not necessarily a foregone conclusion and much will depend on the deal that is negotiated with the EU. Having said that, it appears it is unlikely that any of Scotlands proposals are likely to be adopted and therefore Indyref 2 is more of a probability than a possibility.

I think a big change about a referendum now, compared to previously, was about it's legally binding nature. Previously Scotland would only hold a referendum that was authorised/legislated for in Westminster, so that the referendum result would be legally binding. However since the EU referendum it seems parliament is willing to uphold the result of a non binding referendum, which means the SNP can call a referendum st any time.

The Scots want an equal relationship with other EU countries. The Scots understand that being a member of the EU makes them equal partners with full voting rights. The English don't understand what equal partners means because they think that it is impossible for anyone to be equal to the English and that anyone who would want to leave English rule would obviously collapse and fail. Britain long term inability to be a fully functioning EU member is because of our social awkwardness around foreigners who we just cannot accept as being equal to us, let alone being in some sort of governence with us.

but one of the major things brought up in the ref last time was that if scotland left, they would not be part of the EU......

now they are being taking out against their wishes....

as long as in any campaign they make it aware of their positions on EU membership i don't have a problem....

its funny enough that people down south say "england this" and "england that".... but us in the north east probably have way more in common with those in holyrood... than we have with those in westminster...

last time i was adament that leaving would have been the wrong decision.... now that the landscape has changed i wouldn't begrudge them at all....

Some thoughts;

Nicola can hold a Referendum but only Westminster can allow the result, if it was for Independence, to become law.

If Scotland became independent they COULD NOT still use Sterling, this was pointed out last time. If allowed into the EU, Scotland would have to adopt the Euro and hence contribute, from Scottish money for the bail-outs of Greece and any other Country in the EU that needs it.

Scotland would be one of the poorer members of the EU. Would the Germans and French fancy paying into Scotland from their cash, remember the UK would not at that point be giving money into the EU.

Nicola would close Faslane, losing many Scottish jobs, the warship builders on the Clyde would close as the UK Gov would not be building Royal Navy ships there anymore. Oil price probably won't rise above $70 a barrel anytime soon. The economic outlook for Scotland would be grim.

The EU may not exist by 2019 if the Dutch and French elect right wing parties.

But if they got Independence and it all went tits up, bet it would be the English to blame !!!

Social awkwardness around foreigners? Speak for yourself. England is probably the most diverse country in Europe. Ok, lets be equals - for every £100 spent per English head £120 is spent on a Scottish one. Yes it would be good to be equal . Scotland runs a bigger deficit than Greece, who pays for that? Do you really think the EU would let them in? I'm all for them having independance if thats what they want but don't be fooled that this is anything to do with being in the EU, that is naive in the extreme

We are about to leave the EU. Scotland and N Ireland don't want to, but England and Wales do. No matter, neither Parliament, nor any Assembly will have a vote on any final deal - good or bad.

All 27 other EU countries will have a vote on the final Brexit deal and none of the devolved Assemblies, not even our own parliament will have a vote.

Scotland wants and deserves fair and eqal representation.

All 27 other EU countries will have a vote on the final Brexit deal and none of the devolved Assemblies, not even our own parliament will have a vote.

Scotland wants and deserves fair and eqal representation."

so how does swapping from 56 out of 600 mps in one union to 6 out of 751 in another union give you fairer representation?.

For your attention I'm absolutely for the UK parliament to have a say on brexit, thats because as a union were all represented, however as a welsh person i wouldnt be represented in Scottish parliament so i would be against that

"Just heared the news sturgeon want to hold a ref but not until 2019 ? Why wait so long

not quite... she wants to hold the referendum BEFORE Any UK government actually leaves the EU.... so in effect what is going to happen which would be quite smart is that the scottish people will get some better idea of the the "leave" deal will look like than the rest of us will......

"

The added benefit is that maybe an independent Scotland would not have to reapply to join the EU if the UK was still a member? We are living in interesting times. I wish the people of Scotland well-would love to live there if it wasn't so cold !

"Just heared the news sturgeon want to hold a ref but not until 2019 ? Why wait so long

Because the terms of Brexit are as yet unknown.

The Scottish government has already put forward compromise proposals of what it would like to see in Brexit but this has so far been ignored.

this has all been brought on by may herself...... and listening to the hardline stance of the southern tories....

I think may "may" go for an early election now to try and shore up the majority it has.....

SNP are hoping "May" will fight against this, which in turn will draw out more Scots in support

what ever way May turns, its a difficult situation

This was totally unexpected and caught Westminster on the hop

Give over, this has been expected for about 9 months. The SNP have already got an Indy ref 2 propoganda video out

I'm not quite sure what your point is here. Are you in favour of an independent Scotland or would you prefer to see Scotland remain part of the UK?

If you give some reasons for your choice perhaps there could be some debate. At the moment, you just appear to have a down on the SNP.

I don't care. I have a downer on the SNP because of the dishonesty"

"I'd steal her thunder - offer her a second referendum, but make it now. 2 months time.

And you wonder why the Scots, Irish, Welsh and probably lots more European countries now think that English people are so exasperatingly arrogant.

The world no longer marches to the beat of the English slave drums and believe it or not, no one really wants English people telling them what they should be thinking and doing. The world can and does get along just fine without the English demanding subservience.

And thats where the world's gone wrong

But seriously, I think maybe its just you who think the English are arrogant

The Scots want an equal relationship with other EU countries. The Scots understand that being a member of the EU makes them equal partners with full voting rights. The English don't understand what equal partners means because they think that it is impossible for anyone to be equal to the English and that anyone who would want to leave English rule would obviously collapse and fail. Britain long term inability to be a fully functioning EU member is because of our social awkwardness around foreigners who we just cannot accept as being equal to us, let alone being in some sort of governence with us..

Get real do you really think Slovenia is equal to Germany in the EU?.

So you want to dump one union and join another (possibly) because your equal??.

Tell me how Scotlands voice will have better representation in the EU parliament, exactly how many Scottish euro mps would they have in Brussels?"

Unfortunately the Euro levies have their heads firmly inside their arse. France and Germany dictate euro decisions. Most of which favour Germany and its high end products, Ask the Greeks if they get an equal deal. Come down to slough and speak with young Spanish who are working here because they can't get a job in Spain

Try to avoid thinking like an English person who has watched the Empire crumble away whilst constantly telling the former colonies that they could not possibly manage on their own.

Truly, the world does not need English arrogance anymore. It is that deep rooted, festering arrogance that Brexit has brought to the surface and it will cause even more problems than we are seeing now.

"

difference is is that for example in 18 months time.. if there is an outline of a deal, or looks like there is no deal... then we will likely know... its not going to kept in wraps till they present it to parliament to vote on....

and they can take that into consideration when they decide on independence or not.....

like i said... i think there are a fair few who actually secretly want no deal, just so they in public can still blame everyone else!

England voted to Leave the EU, along with Wales. For all of your thunder and bluster on this thread about Scotland being dragged out of the EU against its will, should England and Wales be kept in the EU against their will? It seems to be the nub of what you are saying. Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland have their own parliaments and assemblies, England don't have any of this, don't you think this is unfair on the English? Scotland benefit more than the English, Welsh and Northern Irish in the Barnet formula, don't you think this is unfair? Let Scotland have their Indy ref 2, there is no guarantee the SNP will win. The economic case for Scotland is worse now than it was in 2014 indy ref 1 after the oil price tanked, and many SNP voters voted to leave the overbearing, interfering, meddling EU on 23rd June 2016, the idea of rule by Brussels is just as repugnant as rule by London to many of them.

Yes, I do.

However, Scotland has its own assembly, and she appears to be trying to get the best deal for Scotland.

I'm not entirely sure how it is dictating to the rest of the union though - she isn't saying that England shouldn't leave the EU, is she?

Sorry, who's being arrogant? Sounds like Sturgeon is to be honest.... So if she wants a referendum then let her have it.... But now.

Re: arrogance.

Read your post, preferably out loud to somebody. Then think about what the term "arrogance" means.

Why should English people have the authority to dictate to the Scots just when they should have their referendum?

Re: arrogance.

You do understand that it is a UK parliament, don't you? Its called parliamentary powers.

Re:arrogance... Sturgeon expects a country if 4 million people dictate to a union of 68 million.

Yes, I do.

However, Scotland has its own assembly, and she appears to be trying to get the best deal for Scotland.

I'm not entirely sure how it is dictating to the rest of the union though - she isn't saying that England shouldn't leave the EU, is she?

If you don't do what the SNP want, then we'll look to become independent. "

Again, she isn't asking that we remain in the EU, is she? Shes asking for details of Brexit which is a perfectly reasonable thing to want, isn't it?

Mrs May is better to allow a independence referendum to happen and let the Scottish people to decide our future as we made it clear we do not want to leave the EU and single market"

When there is another election, the snp will lose seats, because the Scots by august 2018, will have a reality that they won't get into Europe

The last thing the EU wants now, joining their ranks is another Greece, ns has gone on about independence like a vanity project.

Where are all her facts and figures of how Scotland will Fund itself, or is she relying on oil getting to 200 dollars a barrel?

If anybody listened to the commons budget debate tonight, Boris Johnston and Liam fox are going to get Scottish whisky a bigger percentage in exports to India.

India according to them is the biggest whisky market in the world and the Scots make the best whisky, the current export is 4% they are going to get or try to get 15% that's a lot more Scottish jobs, unfortunately, Scotland could not do that if it was in the EU, due to trade barriers. Unlike Britain who won't be shackled by EU regs.

"It's not only the EU Scotland could have trouble joining as an independent nation (as Spain said they would veto it). Today the secretary general of Nato said if Scotland votes for independence then they will be out of Nato and they will have to apply to rejoin as a separate country."

Haven't you heard? Project fear is discredited - so yesterday. Its currency has crashed - bit like the pound.

A Spanish MEP from the governing party says Scotland in the EC would be fine with Spain (perhaps the fishing fleet had words with their politicians).

Whatever is said by any NATO spokesman, Scotland's strategic importance is a crucial part of the alliance's frontier.

In fact, NATO needs Scotland more than the other way round and perhaps a post-independence vote on NATO membership would favour neutrality, although England and USA might not be too happy about that prospect.

Scotland could look to tax revenue from North Sea Oil from 91% of the UK oil fields.

Last time, their often derided fiscal strategy was worked out on $110 per barrel. As of this morning, oil stood at $51 a barrel.

Oil extraction has been falling by 15% a year.

How is Scotland going to make up this huge financial shortfall?

Their share of the national debt, estimated at around £50 billion will have to be considered.

6000 quality jobs at Faslane will go, when they either eject us or we leave.

Nationalist rhetoric is all well and good, until the practicalities get in the way. Prepare for a very hard and bitter battle.

Scottish fishing waters is a card that May is apparently willing to trade in her EU negotiations. I hope that the Scottish fishermen that voted for Brexit in the hope of getting unfettered access to the fishing grounds remember that she was willing to stab them in the back when it comes to the next indyref.

Key phrase in your post Fabio is "what May HAS said on this subject so far", so that means May could change what she has said so far, and could offer Scotland devolved powers over Scottish territorial fishing waters in future. To keep Scotland in the UK 'IF' an indy ref 2 is called Teresa May could offer many more devolved powers to Scotland that can be reclaimed from the EU as a result of Brexit besides control over territorial fishing waters.

Correct. That is what the Supreme court ruled in the court case and is why the supreme court judges said unanimously that the devolved parliaments should not get a say on Brexit, only the UK Parliament in Westminster must decide on EU matters for the whole of the UK as it was the UK Parliament in Westminster who joined the EU.

not quite... she wants to hold the referendum BEFORE Any UK government actually leaves the EU.... so in effect what is going to happen which would be quite smart is that the scottish people will get some better idea of the the "leave" deal will look like than the rest of us will

The added benefit is that maybe an independent Scotland would not have to reapply to join the EU if the UK was still a member? We are living in interesting times. I wish the people of Scotland well-would love to live there if it wasn't so cold !

How will they get a better idea of the deal, what ever they get to know so will we.

I think it's about time that the English had a choice, do we really want to be apart of the wider U.K.

Do we want to keep supporting no hope areas like wales. Do we really want that twankie leader from across the border constantly threatening us

I don't for sure and would happily put a wall up across the M6 And the M1 and charge the moaning scots to cross it

No need to worry, we would build the wall ourselves and keep ignorant people like you out.where do you get the idea we threaten you constantly. This isn't about the English people, it's about getting away from a Westminster government we never voted for. We are sick to the back teeth of constant Tory austerity governments. If you hate the scots so much then rally together and get a vote to get rid of the scots from the uk. I and half of Scotland would help you. "

I think the snp should start being honest with the scotish people even if scotland got independence before the uk leaves the eu they would still be out of the eu and have to apply to rejoin. There are other states in the queque to join eg montenegro but no new memberships until 2020.Also they wont meet the financial criteria to join so this is just a smoke screen for her to get what she wants whatever the concicences.

Let little cranky have her own way ,just a shame about the poor scots who want to stay with the uk,Scotland will fall on its arse without the support from Westminster, we in the north east like the Scots have nothing in common with the elitist toffee nosed twats that run our country, but whether you want brexit or not we got to abide by the result and get positive about it, we all ain't got Blair or Bransons wallet ,2 multimillionaires that wouldn't know what end of a spade you put in the ground to dig with, 2 men that are making plenty noise to stop brexit but do they give a toss about the normal working guy., do they shit, well beware the good Scottish people because in few years time little cranky will be sitting next to those 2 telling them how much she is worth

"I think the snp should start being honest with the scotish people even if scotland got independence before the uk leaves the eu they would still be out of the eu and have to apply to rejoin. There are other states in the queque to join eg montenegro but no new memberships until 2020.Also they wont meet the financial criteria to join so this is just a smoke screen for her to get what she wants whatever the concicences."

There is no queue you either meet the criteria for joining the EU or you dont. the UK as it stands right now is in the EU as member state that means all for 4 nations in the UK all meet the criteria or else the UK would not be in the EU right now. So its clear Scotland do meet the criteria Montenegro do not meet the criteria

Some big IFs hanging around.

IF May gives permission for indy2. News props this morning seem to be saying she won't until after brexit is done.

IF they vote out of UK dovthey realise they will be out of EU anyway? The EU have already stated clearly that the UK is a member of the EU and leaves as a whole entity regardless. An independent Scotland would need to go through the whole process of applying for membership. A seven year process....meeting fiscal rules (they are miles off currently). Joining the Euro!

IF the SNP are honest about what independence means then they would get slaughtered....will be interesting to see how wee Kranky spins the message.

The "four nations" do not individually meet the criteria....not by a country mile. But regardless they are not recognised (by the EU, the UN, or any other body) as seperate nations. The UK is a nation....the only one that counts as far as EU membership is concerned. To be a separate nation you need your own currency (or have given it up to join the Euro). Have your own central bank. Full control over ALL international affairs etc.... Scotland has NONE of these.

If Scotland want independence vote on it now and accept the result this time.

what a ridiculous statement

Why Scotland had a vote in 2014 how many do you want? "

A yes, that was a vote to remain in UK to ensure we remained part of EU

Haven't you heard? Project fear is discredited - so yesterday. Its currency has crashed - bit like the pound.

A Spanish MEP from the governing party says Scotland in the EC would be fine with Spain (perhaps the fishing fleet had words with their politicians).

Whatever is said by any NATO spokesman, Scotland's strategic importance is a crucial part of the alliance's frontier.

In fact, NATO needs Scotland more than the other way round and perhaps a post-independence vote on NATO membership would favour neutrality, although England and USA might not be too happy about that prospect.

Not just any old Nato spokesperson, it was the secretary general of Nato who said Scotland would be automatically out of Nato if it becomes independent, and that Scotland will have to apply to join Nato as an independent country.

And as a member of NATO, be expected to pay your contribution of 2% of your GDP."

Tell me how Scotlands voice will have better representation in the EU parliament, exactly how many Scottish euro mps would they have in Brussels?"

after the ref1 the Tories put the brexit tag into its manifesto.

How come it is ok for the the snp do what they stated in their manifesto but not the Tories ???

Is because it not suit the grievance ??

"How will they get a better idea of the deal, what ever they get to know so will we.

I think it's about time that the English had a choice, do we really want to be apart of the wider U.K.

Do we want to keep supporting no hope areas like wales. Do we really want that twankie leader from across the border constantly threatening us

I don't for sure and would happily put a wall up across the M6 And the M1 and charge the moaning scots to cross it"

This is the simple minded mentality that has divided the UK, simple minded comments like this make it so difficult for countries to work together as ally

Have both sides , SNP and Westminster agreed on another Indy Ref?

As far as I understand it, and I'm open to be corrected, but if there's no agreement then there's no referendum

There will be an agreement; If "May" refuses this to go ahead, there will be a whole new can of worms opened.

If May refuses she will be encouraging Scots to vote Yes to Independence when it eventually comes round

"Lmao the British media ( Sky News ) and the very poor Kay Burley does anyone like her ?

See this is how much the British media are panicking and shitting themselves just saw they are reporting Sky sources says Nicola was pushed into it by Alex Salmond erm did not anyone person hear what she said in her statement.

She clearly said she is still hoping the UK government respect Scotland's wishes to remain part of the EU and full membership of the single market within the UK if they fail to meet that then Nicola has every right to call for a section 30 order and it would be a big mistake for an unelected PM that stand under no manifesto of her own to block another coutnries mandate"

Another country?

So, I mis understood the Indy ref result, and Scotland are an independant country, are they?

No?

So, the UK voted to leave the EU, and that's that.

Just as an aside, you know, just for shits and giggles, can anyone tell me how the Scots could afford to be independent, given that " their " primary source of revenue was going to be oil.. until the price tanked?

Those countries that are not currently meeting their Nato spending commitments of 2% of GDP on defence better start soon because America has lost patience. President Donald Trump has made it clear now all Nato members must honour their Nato spending commitments, USA are sick and tired of picking up the bill on other countries behalf, and that will soon come to an end. If Scotland is allowed to re join Nato as an independent country then Scotland will have to spend 2% of its GDP on defence each year which is a condition of Nato membership.

"

The snp would be finished in their current guise in an independant scotland and our politics would change dramatically . love to see a strong socialist opposition rise from it all "

This is a point that's oft overlooked- and it astonishes me why people castigate a party for doing 'what it says on the tin'. One may agree or disagree with their stance but it's stupid to affect surprise when they do what they were elected to do- seek independence.

If separated, there is a real possibility of some sensible, strong Labour and Tory, even Green and LD parties and that can only be a good thing.

and the interview where she said there should be a renegoiation of all the regional assemblies because of brexit was a bad move...

for example when they are asked about northern ireland there answer is "don't care"

when asked about the consequence for scotland.. again, don't care....

thats why now i think we should have a federal uk.... where each part has there own autonomy...

i wonder if this will also be the thing that makes may snap and call the early election....."
