Political Compass is Wrong

I come to believe the political compass of left vs right is wrong. There is no single spectrum.

How would you see it?

I would take the following factors:

1. Freedom vs Control

2. nationalist vs global view

3. People vs elite

You might be interested in looking at the political compass website. Its based on the theory that theres liberal and conservative as well as authoritarian or not. I think its better than just the left or right division we're stuck with. And if you take their quiz they match you against famous political figures

Good point. I was thinking that the leaders are the true political fixed point. Their followers/supporters fluctuate. This could explain why in democratic countries the parties change often.

Fuck I'm Ghandi or left and liberal. Maybe my openness to sex and anti religion made me liberal. But surprised I'm left. I want to get rich, but not to make the poor poorer. I wonder if we're all liberal on this site.

They try and ask questions to root out what you actually think rather than what you think you think.

You might actually be more like a european liberal than you thought.

Sorry it's an inside joke to myself. I live in Amsterdam. I tell people I did a Brexit into the Netherlands.

In a democracy, policy shifts due to shifts in public opinion. Random changes in public opinion won't do. They have to be coordinated. Opinion is coordinated through signaling and sanctions, both subtle and unsubtle.

Do they change their point in the compass? Can someone be left then right? Or authoritarian then liberal? If so this labeling is as bad as racism.

I can see the end of democracy and it being replaced with a technocracy or meritocracy.Democracy and socialism has taken humanity so far down the road.We need something new for the 21st century.

Call them what you like but I'd call them disfranchised.... Maybe that's why there just voting for any old bollocks that's on offer that sounds different than what they've already been offered?...I dunno maybe they've just got nuts all of a sudden, both is an option

What the hell?

Yes people can move from left to right or vice versa. Its a fairly well known phenomenon that, on average, people get more conservative as they get older.

Why labelling someone as being left or right is anything like racism is beyond me though. Racism does sometimes involve labels but its a small part of what it is and I dont think anyone on the right would be offended at being called right wing or the left either.

I asked Dutch guy about this since they can the conservative liberals here. He brought up an interesting compass.

Conservative/right to progressive and socialism/left to liberal. He saw Gilders as left and conservative/right. Someone who wants to help all classes but wants to go back to traditional ways (nationalism). So the far right is actually left and right.

Progressive to them is forward thinking like the living wage or globisation. But can be socialists, treating all to be equal or liberal letting people have the freedom what career to choose.

Very interesting to me and sounds like it's fitting.
