"You might be interested in looking at the political compass website. Its based on the theory that theres liberal and conservative as well as authoritarian or not. I think its better than just the left or right division we're stuck with. And if you take their quiz they match you against famous political figures " Fuck I'm Ghandi or left and liberal. Maybe my openness to sex and anti religion made me liberal. But surprised I'm left. I want to get rich, but not to make the poor poorer. I wonder if we're all liberal on this site.

They try and ask questions to root out what you actually think rather than what you think you think. You might actually be more like a european liberal than you thought.

"Good point. I was thinking that the leaders are the true political fixed point. Their followers/supporters fluctuate. This could explain why in democratic countries the parties change often." In a democracy, policy shifts due to shifts in public opinion. Random changes in public opinion won't do. They have to be coordinated. Opinion is coordinated through signaling and sanctions, both subtle and unsubtle.

Or authoritarian then liberal? If so this labeling is as bad as racism.

If look at most polls in the US you find the majority want heath care, gun control, immigration control, fair trade deals.... Call them what you like but I'd call them disfranchised.... Maybe that's why there just voting for any old bollocks that's on offer that sounds different than what they've already been offered?...I dunno maybe they've just got nuts all of a sudden, both is an option

Its a fairly well known phenomenon that, on average, people get more conservative as they get older. Why labelling someone as being left or right is anything like racism is beyond me though. Racism does sometimes involve labels but its a small part of what it is and I dont think anyone on the right would be offended at being called right wing or the left either.
