"Surrey is to hold a referendum on increasing council tax by a massive 15% to pay for the growing crisis in social care.Would you vote yes or no?. Older people's services representing the bulk of care have been particularly badly hit by the goverment and that's where the money is needed." much more context on it that that the government said that local councils this year were allowed after a long freeze to raise council tax by 2% they then said they were allowed to raise increases on council tax from 2% to 5% if that 3% specifically went on social care (of which central govt have been taking more and more money away...) they then said if a council wanted to raise it by more than that, then it would have to go to a local referendum... surrey county council are saying the government had cut its annual grant by £170m since 2010 the interesting thing here... surrey county council in conservative run.... and the tory mps in the county are split for/against the increase......

"Anyone from down there actually put the 15% into monetary figures? I'm guessing it's not going to be just a few quid." A few hundred quid on your council tax depending on your tax band.

Surrey social care has been underfunded by £170 million since 2010.Its one of the main reasons the elderly are bed blocking the NHS hospitals because social care is failing.

"Having recently left the social care sector I can say that it is a system that has been failing for years and one that the government has refused to fully acknowledge, cutting funding past the point of safety, money is not the answer, and will not solve the problem, so the referendum in surry is a waste of money, although it might force a discussion, " Why isn't money the solution ? when in the same sentence you say the goverment is "cutting funding past the point of safety" .What is the solution? .

" The whole system needs a overhaul, and this includes how the health sector is involved, at the moment communication between both is not able to happen as the people on the ground(care staff or nurses) can't make any decisions and those that can make them are nowhere to be found, Time is wasted through a paper chase and tick box exercise, social workers have caseloads which are dangerously too big, and mistakes are being made. The £200 per yr per household, will pay for BASIC care for 1 person for approx 3-4 DAYS?? There isn't enough money to solve the problem??
