Love him or loathe him, isn't Andrew Neil a great interviewer? Regardless of the issue, he sinks his teeth in and doesn't let go.

I love his sardonic delivery and his touch of the theatrical!

Manchester

He is the Gold Standard of interviewers. He does his research and more importantly he actually listens to the answer his interviewee gives so he often picks apart inconsistencies, contradictions etc.

He's also one of the few people in the media who isn't afraid of Murdoch.

It's just a pity he's a climate change denial loon.

"I miss Paxo! "

Yep, sacked from Newsnight by the BBC because he was too good at his job on the orders of the government.

So much for BBC independence.

There ya go...

Read it in the torygraph must be true...

Journalist who continually made greedy tory ministers and mps look like cunts by refusing to let them brush aside his difficult questions had a mind melt and left his job because of lift music...

Did you read any of the articles in the torygraph, rail or scum about those communist unions calling strikes without reason? Funny how the journalists writing those stories on behalf of their billionaire press baron owners are desperately trying to get the NUJ back in to represent them because the most of them haven't had a pay rise in 10 years (if what I hear on the grapevine is true)...

Now, now, I can sense the antipathy coming back and our truce will be in jeopardy!

I just did a quick Google as was not aware that the government had pressured the BBC to sack him! I don't think that happened though. I love a conspiracy, but that is a far stretch, to be fair.

"

Would that be the 'independent' BBC where over the last 6 years our government has appointed the chair of the board (ex chair of the Tory Party), the head of politics is a former Tory Party worker and the top political commentator (Mr Neil) is a former Tory press officer?

Seems to me that the word 'independent' is getting stretched in the same way as Thatcher stretched the neutrality of the police. Now I will admit that a case can be put that it is all happenstance and there has been no politicising of the BBC. However I for one find it to be quite hollow when I look at how domestic political issues are being reported.

No......but don't let the truth get in the way of a good argument.

Actually I think Paxo lost it in the last few years....he wasn't as hard as he could have been....particularly on left leaning politicians.

Personally if I was interviewing a plotician I'd have a three strikes and out policy.

The third time they refused to give a straight yes/no answer I would terminate the interview...telling the viewers that it's no use continuing as "whoever" seems incapable of answering honestly....so think hard at next election!

I would come to the conclusion that political bias does play a part in these roles, but would hope that there would be a good range of people from varying backgrounds/ideologies so that one overriding faction doesn't take over. I can also see that there have been instances where by the BBC has been 'threatened' by the current government, specifically in the furore over Charter renewal.

I find him interesting to watch. His hair is fascinating too. Is This Week still on? Used to always watch that even though Diane Abbott does my head in.

As for the BBC, when both the right and the left are absolutely convinced it's totally biased against them - they're probably managing to be fairly neutral.

Last 'This Week' programme was on after the last Question Time on Thursday 8th December, think both programme's are having a break for Christmas now though and due to start again in the New year. Diane Abbot hasn't been on it for ages, Liz Kendal or Alan Johnson seem to be the Labour representatives on it now.

And yeah, Andrew Neil's hair is weird, did someone give him the nickname Brillo pad hair?

Totally agree about the BBC! I know we pay for it, but I think it should be something which we should be proud of. The greatest broadcasting organisation in the world.

His hair actually looks like a yarmulke.
