Should being an MP be a full time job, in which you are not allowed to get a second job? Many MPs have 2nd jobs, for example Gove getting £360 per hour for writing a column in the time.

Isn't it time we demanded MPs spent their whole working week on purely being an MP?

No, give them second, even third jobs, keep em occupied. That way they won't have time to come up with all the interfering westminster nanny type laws they think up in their idle minds.

Your paid to do a job, do it, no second jobs, no fees for helping people/business "understand" parliament.

Or maybe the opposite. Maybe they should be forced to have a 2nd job. They should be forced to work 20% of their time at a job with the median pay of their constituency.

If anything our MPs, living in the Westminster bubble, are out of touch enough without being forced to become even more detached from the rest of us by not being aloud to do work, paid or unpaid, outside of politics.

Maybe if more MPs actually had, or even had had, a proper job rather than just being career politicians we'd have a more in touch parliament and government rather than the semi-detached bunch of careerists we seem to currently have.

We're all allowed as many jobs as we can do or want to do and MP's are no different.

Why should they be different?

I think it's just jealousy or people just running out of things to moan about.

But the only reason anyone takes a second job is for the money, you'd like to think an MPs salary is enough that they concentrate on the job at hand.

It's all relative though isn't it , they might get just under £75,000 but you ain't going to live like a millionaire on that and if they have a partner who dosent work then its not a huge wage.

Also can't MP's be allowed to strive to better themselves just like the rest of us ???

How would you react if some stranger declared they thought you earned enough and you should be happy with what you have ?

Do you have some evidence that they don't concentrate on the job at hand if they have a second job ???? And since when does being an MP mean it's a 168hr p/w job ?

Not only should MP's be banned from having 2nd jobs, they and their immediate families) should be banned from having any position that could be seen to influence any position or voting taken by the MP.

We pay MP's to represent us. Not the highest bidder for their vote!

There will be rules regarding conflicts of interest anyway regarding MP's , Police etc in regard to second jobs.

On becoming an MP; all their existing assets should be frozen; for the period of their time as MPs;

Pay them the minimum wage; make them live in a barracks next to parliament, with a canteen that budgets £5.00 per head for their food. and provide them with a one bed flat on a council estate in their constituency, for constituency work.

They would only be allowed to use public transport. ( but would get free passes for it if on their constituency or parliamentary business.)

Provide them with a clothing allowance of £5 per week, which is to be spent in primark or somewhere similar .

5 hours a week shall be spent doing something useful like cleaning toilets in a hospital.

Actually that's the best idea; dump all the MPs and ministers and let the civil servants get on with it.

Actually that's the best idea; dump all the MPs and ministers and let the civil servants get on with it.

At least they know what they are doing.

A technocracy. We have enough laws already. So they can leave that bit alone now, just admin now.

Yep, there are...

MPs have to list outside interests in 'The Registrar of Members Interests' and then cash in! Boris collected £303,316 from 16 June 2015 to 27 Sept 2016 from various places + £22,916.66 a month from the Telegraph Media Group. That's over £600,000 on top of his salary for representing his constituents...

That's about seven and a half times his MPs salary, he don't get that for nothing!
