Has it's time come ?

With all the arguments over Brexit and true Democracy I think it's time that all votes in a General Election count Equal !

Agree but it does,nt really matter for the next few years as there is nobody to contest the Tories.

I'm all for it, if we had it at the last general election Ukip would have got over 80 MP's instead of just 1.

I don't think it's time has come, but it should be here. But PR isn't enough, there has be regional devolution too. I would like see much more powers given to London to raise taxes, issue bonds and build social housing, for example.

London isn't a country !

Their is too much local power in the hands of part time politicians who can't cut it full time

UKIP and Torres had about 53% of total vote between them...so would have had a Tory /UKIP coalition government!

Plus....maybe people have a short memory...but the previous referendum we had was wether to change to a PR election system......it was rejected by a rather chunky majority......

The referendum was in May 2011.... result was 68% to keep first past post....32% to go for PR.

Rather decisive result!

Nick Clegg was leader of that campaign, maybe that's why it tanked so badly?

The 2011 referendum was for the Alternative Vote system, which is different from PR

It was deemed the best form of PR as our democracy is based on a parliament of constituency representatives.

Cambridge

There are multiple forms of electing a parliament, all of them have some strengths and some weaknesses.

Personally I don't think that reform of the electoral system would be the way that I would go to improve parliament. What I would suggest is much more time dedicated to private members bills and un-whipped votes where politicians can vote their conscience and for what they think is best for their constituents & their country, rather than what's best for the party.

Yes, London isn't a country, but giving London and other regions more powers, would help various areas deal with their own unique problems. I know that is not the question concerning P.R, but it is part of the issue of people feeling their vote matters and their issues are addressed.

Exactly, which is why it's important that London, with its unique position within the UK, is able to bolster income through its own tax raising powers (from the city) to further improve infrastructure and social housing.

Not only is this additional income badly needed but it would save the rest of the country having to contribute to our capital.

It's not uncommon in other major cities in the world, New York, Madrid, and Lisbon amongst many others already have localised tax raising powers.

The Brexit vote has exposed a number of divisions in our country, and a way of dealing with some of the differences is to allow for as much autonomy as a particular locality may want, this would enable different parts of the country to develop as fast or as slow as they wish.
