When you say things like;

Cost of living rising daily

You're supposed to say FACT at the end.

It adds more gravitas and makes the statement more plausible.

It's especially important to write FACT when it isn't.

Though certainly sensationalized, which point isn't true in your opinion. The pound isn't worthless, but is at a record low against trading partners. Jobs are being lost, that's a given. The cost of living is definitely rising, the figures are there to back it up.

Of course there's a few sides to every story. Sterling is low, that will help exports, which in turn may create jobs. Though the expected £65 billion pounds lost to the exchequer, which represents 9.5% of the UK's GDP is a fact, that's hard to ignore.

The £65 billion is not a fact, it's an economic forecast/prediction for the year 2030, 15 years in the future, based on a load of dodgy assumptions by George Osborne to use in his Remain campaign. You may as well write to Mystic Meg and ask her what will happen in 2030 for what is worth.

The current trend is down, my prediction would be that it will continue the trend. How long for? No idea. If I could predict that I'd still be trading. Actually, I wouldn't, I'd be sat in my villa somewhere with a much more pleasant climate than the UK.

I've not seen these fluctuations in sterling. But really, short term it doesn't mean much. The next bit of good or bad news will affect it again. Good news it will rally, bad it will dip.

I suspect it will pick up when the anticipated bad news doesn't materialise.

All markets are prone to the occasional erratic swing, often affected by things beyond market control.

It could be perceived good or bad news.

In the states the dollar doesn't move much just before non farm payroll day, everyone waits to see what the news will bring before trading. Then the market goes crazy.

When the tsunami hit Japan the yen dropped over 450 points inside 24 hours. A few days later it was strong again.

After reading what you have said, we are sure you agree that this is fairly unprecedented times.

Whilst your answer is quite correct, it isn't a market that many traders have history of trading in is it?

The truth is sterling is at it's lowest point in over 30 years now, can it be described as merely a market fluctuation? Or an erratic swing?

Watching and listening to Mark Carey speaking on Friday we don't think that he sees it quite like that.

In fact, didn't he say that it will probably get worse yet?

Though certainly sensationalized, which point isn't true in your opinion. The pound isn't worthless, but is at a record low against trading partners. Jobs are being lost, that's a given. The cost of living is definitely rising, the figures are there to back it up.

Of course there's a few sides to every story. Sterling is low, that will help exports, which in turn may create jobs. Though the expected £65 billion pounds lost to the exchequer, which represents 9.5% of the UK's GDP is a fact, that's hard to ignore.

Unemployment figures are down, not up.

Sterling might be low at the moment. Next week it'll be high. The next week low again. It fluctuates, like all currencies. I traded Forex for years, you see it every day.

This is not new news......

Question then, when was it last this low?

And as an ex-trader, do you really think it will be high next week?

Agree totally with fluctuations, but in your trading years how often did you see sterling fluctuate by this much?

In fact, didn't he say that it will probably get worse yet?"

Many traders won't have experienced sterling swings like this, but they will have of other currencies.

We tend to see a week sterling as bad, long term it would be for sure. On the flipside it's good for exports, so it's very much swings and roundabouts. Anyone trying to trade a strong sterling (which they wont unless they're criminally insane) would be dissapointed. The export industry would be happier.

Forex traders will profit whether a currency is strong or weak.

Personally I think it's an erratic swing as a result of the predicted £65b "loss". Which isn't a loss, it's a prediction which was part of a vote winning strategy. Also for around 15 years in the future, where no one really knows what will happen.

Interesting debate/thread this.

"So it turns out Brexit voters that your leader wanted to stay in after all but simply used the campaign to raise his political profile

Sucked you all in

Worthless pound

Companies going bust

Cost of living rising daily

Do Brexit supporters like Donald trump I wonder

When you say things like;

You're supposed to say FACT at the end.

It adds more gravitas and makes the statement more plausible.

Many experts think that the pound was over inflated and over valued before anyway. The ex governor of the Bank of England Mervyn King said a few days ago that the Bank of England had been trying to devalue the pound for the last 3 years.

Weve been abroad twice this yr like every yr....you do not even notice the difference, you drink in bars where the beer /drinks are 2 euro a pop food is cheap and the sun shines...though most tourists are happy to drink in bars that charge 4.5 euro a drink so it in itself makes a mockery of the slight decline in the value of sterling,..lets face it if you go away your using disposable income anyway,if you feel you cant afford it then stay at home.

All of our lives are for ever compromised by something, frequently beyond our control or influence.

That's life. Sometimes it sucks. Sometimes it doesn't.

Give it a few hours rational thought. Think seriously if Brexit really is impacting on you (and exactly how), or if you feel that it is.

Frequently what we feel or fear is a false reality.

I hope you're able to see more positivity in the future.

It's not stopped me either, went to Gran Canaria last week in September and i had a great time.

The food and drink I buy now still costs the same as it did before the referendum.

Unilever (pot noodle/Marmite) were just trying it on the other day and got put in their place by Tesco.

All this panic at the moment is due to the uncertainty.

Merkel won't be running Germany much longer, that's one obstacle out of the way.

The citizens of other European countries are thinking along the lines of Brexit.

So in 20 years, the 27 (current) EU states will have all collapsed? Or are you saying that the current version of the EU that you don't like will have changed into something different?

What radical Brexiters are patently missing is the unions of countries joining for the greater good and a common cause is a fundamentally good idea. The fundamentalists can't accept this because they can't accept that anyone else can be equal to or as good as the true, white and glorious indigenous Brit, descendants of the Empire builders and conquerors of the world.

The EU will neither fail, nor collapse but it will for sure be as different in 20 years from today as it was 20 years ago. The world is ever changing and the EU being a collection of sovereign and independent nations will change according to the will of those nations and their citizens.

Your last sentence is the reason it will collapse. It is an outdated idea and working 'together' is not always in the best interests of individual countries. Let's have a look at what else hasn't been signed off for God knows how long:

The U.K. Whole of Government Accounts (qualified every year since their inception)

The DWP accounts (qualified every year since 1988/89)

The Ministry of Defence accounts (qualified for 7 years in a row and counting)

Department for Education (adverse opinion issued by the Auditor General in 2016)

It seems strange to me that someone who uses accounts not being signed off by their auditors as a sign of corruption would vote to give more power to institutions which also can't get their accounts signed off by their auditors...

Tis a lovely idea, isn't it? All joining together for the greater good. All creating a panacea and a wonderful union.

I think that was what used to be called communism.

The trouble is, it does not recognise differences and aspirations.

It encourages Greece and other untenable countries to join for the sake of subsidies. It does not encourage reward for effort or risk.

Yes. The EU will destroy itself before long. It is unsustainable, philosophically, geographically and economically. It might have worked while a common market but not as a political union. A stupid idea.

Let's not forget the EU accounts haven't been signed off for God knows how long.

The stink of corruption swirls around like a cloying fog....

"

You're right.

But this thread is about Brexit and the EU.

Them's a whole other can of worms and thread.

Best not make assumptions about how I voted.

"So it turns out Brexit voters that your leader wanted to stay in after all but simply used the campaign to raise his political profile

Sucked you all in

Worthless pound

Companies going bust

Cost of living rising daily

Do Brexit supporters like Donald trump I wonder

When you say things like;

Worthless pound

Companies going bust

Cost of living rising daily

You're supposed to say FACT at the end.

It adds more gravitas and makes the statement more plausible.

It's especially important to write FACT when it isn't.

*this has been a public service information broadcast.

In 1972, before we joined the EU, the £ bought $2:65.... it then lost 40% of its value....down to $1:56.

Jobs are not being lost... Unemployment has fallen.

The cost of living rises every year....

A forecast is not a fact... Re the 65Billion forecast.

Fair point. I still think it's relevant though, I've seen the accounts being qualified tossed around as a criticism of the EU many times on here, and it's a legitimate concern, but it's one where we should probably get our own house in order before using it as evidence of corruption.

anything Boris said was irrelevant, the vote would still have gone the same way, it was won as soon as a referendum was announced. And do I like Trump? No, but I hope he wins and brings the political establishment down. What kind of country is it where the Presidency gets passed from father to son or husband to wife etc?
