Prompted by a post on another forum. When all the wars are over (yeah, okay, imagine if) all the refugees and immigrants should be forced back. What would you miss most?

Prompted also by taking my weekend shopping trip to Croydon. I love it ....

Well, I'd be one of the ones forced to leave so I guess I'd miss the British castles and pubs the most.

What if you are part Scottish+English part European refugee from WW2, and part European as a european migrant? I mean I was born here, so I'm British, but as many 'patriots' have posted through my letter box, 'Im not a native Briton'.

Just saw the 'if they left' bit - well okay, I'd miss all the Indian, Middle Eastern, Eastern European and Western European...and latin American restaurants and specialist shops which have sprung up over the last 5 years in my localish areas.

Oh and all the doctors, professors and students and business people I work with on a monthly basis who have enriched my understanding of the world and personally, scientific ideas.

"Just waiting for anyone who thinks 'send them back' to think this through."

What's to think through? You said send them back and addressed all immigrants and refugees. In my mind you are addressing all - regardless of ethnicity, culture, religion, and point of arrival, refugees and immigrants.

So who specifically are you talking about? Or are you actually suggesting all immigrants and refugees who have arrived here since the concept of nation states?

I perhaps need to make this clear. On z number of threads on this forum, a number of 'Britain first' type posts have suggested we send all immigrants back. I am not only wondering exactly how this would be done (too obvious and discussed ad nauseam) but what would these people miss? Don't they think anything is added to what makes Britain Britain by the immigrants. If anyone is in doubt about my personal views, feel free to look at the profile or press the green arrow .... its pretty obvious I am not suggesting anyone should be sent anywhere ....

I applogise then, the dialogue you used just sounded like you were supporting the whole 'repatriation' thing which seems to be gaining momentum in some circles atm.

Hardly, given my background. Perhaps my irony is lost on some. But no-one who was out in force defending this nationalism is saying anything now

I'm glad you mentioned science...where on earth would we be without foreign scientists?

"England and Scotland were leading centres of the Scientific Revolution from the 17th century[278] and the United Kingdom led the Industrial Revolution from the 18th century,[228] and has continued to produce scientists and engineers credited with important advances.[279] Major theorists from the 17th and 18th centuries include Isaac Newton, whose laws of motion and illumination of gravity have been seen as a keystone of modern science;[280] from the 19th century Charles Darwin, whose theory of evolution by natural selection was fundamental to the development of modern biology, and James Clerk Maxwell, who formulated classical electromagnetic theory; and more recently Stephen Hawking, who has advanced major theories in the fields of cosmology, quantum gravity and the investigation of black holes.[281]

Major scientific discoveries from the 18th century include hydrogen by Henry Cavendish;[282] from the 20th century penicillin by Alexander Fleming,[283] and the structure of DNA, by Francis Crick and others.[284] Famous British engineers and inventors of the Industrial Revolution include James Watt, George Stephenson, Richard Arkwright, Robert Stephenson and Isambard Kingdom Brunel.[285] Other major engineering projects and applications by people from the UK include the steam locomotive, developed by Richard Trevithick and Andrew Vivian;[286] from the 19th century the electric motor by Michael Faraday, the incandescent light bulb by Joseph Swan,[287] and the first practical telephone, patented by Alexander Graham Bell;[288] and in the 20th century the world's first working television system by John Logie Baird and others,[289] the jet engine by Frank Whittle, the basis of the modern computer by Alan Turing, and the World Wide Web by Tim Berners-Lee.[290]

Scientific research and development remains important in British universities, with many establishing science parks to facilitate production and co-operation with industry.[291] Between 2004 and 2008 the UK produced 7% of the world's scientific research papers and had an 8% share of scientific citations, the third and second highest in the world (after the United States and China, respectively).[292] Scientific journals produced in the UK include Nature, the British Medical Journal and The Lancet."

I noticed there are reference marks in this passage yo have obviously copy and pasted, care to share the reference.

Yes in the past British scientists have been world leaders and world leading - and yes we are still one of the most attractive places in the world to conduct scientific studies in both academia and industry. However, and I believe Prof Steven Hawkings and Brian Cox said that we maintain are place due to our willingness to take in academics from unstable countries, and because we have a very open society which places skin colour and origin of birth behind that of ability, regardless of whether that is in academia, industry or other beneficiaries.

I'm delighted to see today that the Home Office are finally working to get some of the refugee children in the Calais camp into the UK, we have been dragging our heels for far too long.

Personally I cannot believe how they slept at night leaving it so long. Terrible and heart breaking if you've worked with children from Kurdistan or Syria (as I have) .... so awful for them.

So why add that they would be forced back, you could have just asked that by saying.... Imagine if there had never been immigration?.

I'd miss not being pick pocketed by Romanian gypsies.... They have a wonderful touch with them and I keep my change very very low in my inside trouser pocket

Actually I don't think I mentioned the race of the thug that jumped on Jane's back at the NEC, knocking her to the ground, before ripping the bag from her hand, breaking two of her fingers....

His race/colour is irrelevant, but anyone that attacks and robs a woman in a car park IS a thug, this one just happened to be British and from Solihull

Racial stereotyping is a loose term for people who make assumptions ..... and tar everyone with the same brush and not see people as individuals, surely? .

You mean like describing a thug from Solihull is different than describing a pick pocket from Romania.... I'm not quite following this logic

They mentioned one thug from Solihull, you referred to being pick pocketed by Romanian gypsies .... one person versus all Romanian gypsies lumped together? "

.

No just the ones I got pick pocketed by?....I don't remember saying I got pick pocketed by ALL the Romanian gypsies.

I'd miss not being pick pocketed by Romanian gypsies.... They have a wonderful touch with them and I keep my change very very low in my inside trouser pocket

Jane had her bag snatched at the NEC in February, not by a Romanian, but by a British born thug from Solihull.......

If there'd never been immigration, how could Yu say what you kissed. I have met a fair few Romanian gipsies and before never been pick pocketed but then again racial stereotyping never goes away

.

Let's get this straight.... Your willing to racially stereo type thugs from Solihull?.

But your not willing to even admit that some Romanian gypsies could be pick pockets or ever have been?.

Actually I don't think I mentioned the race of the thug that jumped on Jane's back at the NEC, knocking her to the ground, before ripping the bag from her hand, breaking two of her fingers....

His race/colour is irrelevant, but anyone that attacks and robs a woman in a car park IS a thug, this one just happened to be British and from Solihull.

Well you seem to have tied your own noose really, if you had just described your pick pocket as Romanian then no that wouldn't be a race, but you said Romanian gypsy, and UK courts have ruled that Irish Travellers and Romany Gypsies are a distinct ethnic group.

Out of interest, how did you become aware of their ethnicity? Did they tell you during the attack, or did the police tell you?

Well this is because we keep on letting in people from countries that have prisons and criminals. We should only allow people in from countries that dont have criminals or prisons, like the UK.

Bottom line for me is this, all countries have their fair share of criminals, Britain certainly does, as does Romania, and all other EU countries.

Romanian criminals make great headlines for the likes of the Daily Mail, truth is we don't need to import criminals as we have enough amongst the chavs in our society.

Seeing and experiencing racism isn't divisive, the racism that exists is. I take it you haven't experienced it .... being followed in supermarkets, being told you are black so you shouldn't be in the top set at school etc, people making monkey noises when you are playing football ... all of these have happened to my mixed race son, but not to my Caucasian one, or did we just imagine it? People of a certain race or nationality doing have quirky little ways and whilst I would certainly miss the diversity and cultural richness that is the London I live in, I would welcome the open conversation, the shared cultural experiences and what I learn from my friends and others I interact with from different cultures. Gawd it would be a god awful boring place .... I have lived in different parts of the USA, areas dominated by whites who dont want to mix and those which are a cultural melting pot. I've even imagined getting threatened and spat at by people when I visited my ex husband's family in Mississippi, but then again, I do have a very active imagination, as such things surely can't exist. I, for one, am seeking harmony for the sake of my children, who have been brought up so see others as people, and respect them as such .... and expect the same in return ...

We've lived there and have family there and no it isn't. But my point was you were being a bit divisive and trying to come over as in some way superior by having a go at Crewe. And why would the Spanish not have me? I'snt that a bit racist thinking? Maybe I'm Spanish

How do you make that out .... about anti racists? Out of interest?

because they look to cause division and often see racism where none exists. And frankly I find this thread a bit patronising and pathetic, breaking people down to their quirky little ways or there slightly different food. People are people and it is the person I would miss not their culture

There is no foreign culture that you enjoy? No music or food or fashion or cultural practice? No even Spanish? I thought you wanted to live there?

I enjoy most foreign culture and in particular Spanish thats why I lived there and will live there again but there is none in this country to miss

So you're saying you don't like British culture?

Yes I do. There is no Spanish culture here or any other culture other than British really, foreign restaurants and shops and markets do not a culture make

Maybe not in Crewe ....

I rest my case

Crewe is very, very different from London. At least the sort if London I live in. If you're Spanish, why did you leave? Shouldn't people stay in their country and only leave when they are in danger and then go back? Why would you assume someone from any other culture would want you or any outsider .... or is it only the British that dont want outsiders in? Hardly racist thinking on my part, but at least you are having a go at picking a hole in. my logic ...

"Just saw the 'if they left' bit - well okay, I'd miss all the Indian, Middle Eastern, Eastern European and Western European...and latin American restaurants and specialist shops which have sprung up over the last 5 years in my localish areas.

Oh and all the doctors, professors and students and business people I work with on a monthly basis who have enriched my understanding of the world and personally, scientific ideas.

Of course it's been copied and pasted...I wasn't going to waste more time than necessary enriching your understanding of home-grown talent. And yet you as a so-called scientist still appear to contest the veracity of the content!?

Britain was ranked 7th in the world in Nobel science prizes (2010) as per head of population with 104 Nobel Laureate awards in Chemistry, Physics, Physiology or Medicine, and the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences.

Since 2010 there have been another nine Nobel awards in science (according to my calculations) for Britons with another three in the last month alone!

you do realise the NHS backbone is broken, perhaps it was those lower qualified / lower trained doctors & nurses that helped fuck up the NHS

Its their vested interests, they just want to make everyone better so they can knock off early for the day, the bastards. Or do they keep everyone sick just to keep themselves in a job, I can never remember?

The NHS isn't broken, and it isn't fucked up. Don't get me wrong, there is always room for improvement and it could be better, but we do have one of the best healthcare systems in the world that looks after people cradle to the grave, rich or poor. People say that its Remainers who talk the country down, but I find comments like this are much more likely to come from Brexiters.

sorry, perhaps you are correct

I will take back that comment, I was only going through personal experience I have had of both myself & family when dealing with the NHS then comparing to the quality of service received on private health cover.

If I had only went national health, my condition would have been getting drastically worse, rather than full recovery with private health care

I am sure the NHS tries to do a good job, but when it comes to my health I will go private every time

and yes we do know that some surgeons treat both NHS & private patients but until you experience treatment on both sides you will never know the poor quality on one side and excellent quality of treatment on the other.

Babbacombe Torquay

I've experienced both, my only reason to go private on one particular occasion was to fast track treatment through another avenue.

I've also had more serious surgery through the NHS and equally received top drawer treatment and aftercare.

I don't see anything wrong with the old Adage of when in Rome live as the Romans Do !

So we encourage the people who contribute and like it here to stay .

And help make it possible for the people who want to change our values to go !

And before anyone says it lol ,

I would agree if the Spanish did the same to Brits who try to turn Spain into little England

I'm not contesting anything. I'm asking for the source you got those paragraphs from.

Yes Britain has always been good for science, home grown talent has always been strong, however it's on the rise elsewhere. The key is remaining competitive and maintaining strong public investment in educating your own populace, but also be willing to bring in and allow research from other nationalities within our own borders.

5 years is a long time in science, something can make gnome analysis cheaper allowing for more effective medical diagnostics at a cheaper price, then 5 years later be made redundant by a new technique or method or piece of equipment from a different research team elsewhere.
