On trial for a racist "joke"!.

.

So when does a joke stop being a joke and become hate speech?, it's a tough one and I'm going to be watching the trial closely

I think its a funny joke and find it amazing that it even got to court. You'll hear worse than that in every comedy club, every week.

The joke works on the black guys skin colour, it doesn't imply there's anything wrong with his skin colour.

Paul Gascoigne is a vile human being though, just one with an excellent publicity team. Hopefully I've offended everyone now.

It seems strange that you can't crack a joke as it can be deemed racist but you can walk down the street with a placard declaring death to the infidels.

Strange world we live in.

You can't do that in this country. You probably could in America.

I think the problem here is that he singled the guy out for the comment & not just a joke in genetal.

£1000 fine, and ordered to pay Mr Rowe £1,000 in compensation, then solicitor fees on top of that

the cost of a joke today.

I haven't heard the joke, nor do I know the context so I am not going to comment on this conviction.

However having seen and heard some of the totally racist jokes told by professional comedians of minority ethnicity (that are available for public viewing on You Tube) I expect that I will be hearing of many African, Afro-Caribbean and Asian comedians being prosecuted and convicted of the same crime in the near future.

Or maybe not...

I think it's quite interesting as the line between offensiveness and a "joke" is obviously very thin.

Some comedians have the ability and talent to push that line while making genuine points of interest about the subject matter.

I find it hard to say wether gazza was being just offensive, got the line wrong or is being wrongly critiqued without actually being there, which is why I thought the judge might be lenient, however he wasn't!.... And this might set a precedent

What about if he was telling fat jokes and pointing to a fat person in the crowd?.

Personally I wouldn't tell a joke about skin colour but I may consider repeating a joke about culture and even racial culture if I thought it was good!

I don't see why colour should be exempt from jokes. If a joke is based on a negative connotation (e.g. saying dark skin is 'dirty') then yes that's crossing a line. But just making jokes that reference a colour, I don't see the harm with. I don't think it's offensive to call someone a coconut / egg / banana for example.

Will be interseting to see if a black comedian would be taken to court over a white joke.

Not saying that he was not out of order for that particular joke as it was clearly aimed at the black guy as it would not have worked in quite the same way saying it to a white guy.

Still a lot of money for what was a very old joke that I heared in the 70's

"why is this post in the politics forum? Is he running as MP"

Because it is a political issue...

You do understand that how the law used to prosecute this case is interpreted and enforced has a direct baring on what is and is not allowed be said and therefore has a direct on what is and is not a lawful political opinion to express.
