Diane James elected new leader of UKIP

Cannock

The leadership race to elect a new leader of UKIP has now come to an end and Diane James who is a UKIP MEP has been elected by the party as new leader. She has the full backing of outgoing leader Nigel Farage, and her job will now be to keep the pressure on the government to deliver Brexit for the 52% who voted Leave in June. Funny really that the Labour party, supposedly a progressive party has never had a woman leader and UKIP have beaten the Labour party to having is first woman leader in a much shorter time frame.

From her speech, it seems she is a determined, focus'd female who will do her roll of leadership well.

Wouldn't that logic dictate that the Tories are therefore much more progressive than Ukip who are much more progressive than Labour.. ?

Just putting it out there...

Suffolk - East Anglia

Appears that ukip are in a safe pair of hands. Good woman.

Hopefully she will keep the exit process in check so that we get the Brexit that we voted for and what this great country of ours so desperately needs.

How long was the tory party in existence before it got its first woman leader with Maggie Thatcher? It was well over 50 years. UKIP have got their first woman leader and the party has been going less than 30 years. Labour has still never had a woman leader to this day.

Fair enough on the new UKIP leader.

However I think this 'labour hasn't had a female leader thing is tripe. Perhaps there is some institutionalised sexism in the PLP - which will face out as MP's pass away, call politics quits, and new mps take their place or perhaps in the membership (though I doubt it currently considering how left the membership is under Corbyn).

Basically I couldn't care about the gender, skin colour, culture, religion or sexual orientation of a party leader - I'm voting for the policies they want to bring to parliament or want to oppose in parliament. I think that is the same with most voters.

"Who cares? "

How about the 3.9 million who voted UKIP at the last general election or the 17.3 million who voted Brexit for a start.

"Who cares? "

4 million people who voted UKIP at the last general election and a good number of the 17 million people who voted Leave in the EU referendum.

Reading and surrounds

Yeah, good pair of hands.

See wikipedia. 'James made several controversial comments about Russian President Vladimir Putin in an April 2015 interview with Iain Dale, saying she admired him and that he was a strong leader who puts his country first and that he and UKIP may share common ground over their disagreements with the EU.'

I'd say Putin is one of the most dangerous men to lead a country since a certain Austrian bloke in the 1930s. He put his country first and was also xenophobic.

Of course Putin disagrees with the EU. He's in direct commercial competition. He's desperate that no more of his neighbours join, and goes to lengths such as invading The Ukraine to destabilise the campaign.

I'm sure she'll get on famously with him

You have your point about UKIP's growth and the success of vote leave, but at the time it was Nigel Farage at the helm/preparing to step down from the helm. So really I can't see what your comment is seeking to achieve?

There may well be a few more yet if the police investigations find the tories guilty of breaking electoral rules on spending limits at the last general election.

I don't see them as wasted votes, they were votes that helped pile pressure on Cameron to deliver the referendum. Without UKIP there would never have been a referendum.

You're sounding like the the remoaners. It'll be interesting to see the results of the new constituency elections though.

In all the excitement today I forgot all about the Lib dems.

Just learned on sky news that the Lib dems have never had a woman leader either.
