Regulations are laws by another name, if you look at say the libertarian movement in the US, they want to remove regulations, the conservatives want to remove regulations, the democrats, the republicans even the bleeding labour party removed loads of regulations. . . "We" is a general answer to the human population, as a whole were not great at doing the honourable thing and I don't think it's a general human trait either, we run a system based on greed and competition, to imagine we won't get greedy and competitive on the honourable stuff is crazy!. In fact you could say it's a genuine trait that despite a system run on greed and competition we still occasionally turn out the opposite way. If a bank comes to a regulator and says "I've got an idea for a product, it's called a credit default swap can I sell it?" Then regulation is the "yes / no" answer to that. Laws are what give the regulator the right to make that decision without a law. | |||

Anybody that thinks we could reduce laws is either a maniac or deluded, it seems unfortunately to get some decent laws your going to get some stupid laws but it's still probably better than the alternative Who is 'we'. I don't think I'm cruel to other humans... unless they post something stupid on the forums. The biggest tragedies are committed by bureaucracies. People do things when they become a cog in the machine, that they would never do as an individual. This is not my opinion, many psychological studies have confirmed this. What we need is to break up so many of the mass bureaucracies and get back to proper fucking capitalism with some decent regulation. . Regulations are laws by another name, if you look at say the libertarian movement in the US, they want to remove regulations, the conservatives want to remove regulations, the democrats, the republicans even the bleeding labour party removed loads of regulations. . . "We" is a general answer to the human population, as a whole were not great at doing the honourable thing and I don't think it's a general human trait either, we run a system based on greed and competition, to imagine we won't get greedy and competitive on the honourable stuff is crazy!. In fact you could say it's a genuine trait that despite a system run on greed and competition we still occasionally turn out the opposite way. The odd thing is i actually share your hated of people who wish to ban things despite being a person who things we need to ban things!!! It's a conundrum Regulation and laws are different. If a bank comes to a regulator and says "I've got an idea for a product, it's called a credit default swap can I sell it?" Then regulation is the "yes / no" answer to that. Laws are what give the regulator the right to make that decision without a law. " . So when your offering a share in profits for your fracking to locals is that a regulatory law or just a bribe?. What about when government change laws to say that now Westminster will have final say over local planning on fracking rigs but word it to sound like their doing it to overturn local permission to frack??. A regulator enforces regulation passed by Government they don't make the regulation perse but they can give guidance on what the regulation should be!. Occasionally regulation is law, the gas regulations are prosecutable under law, the police can arrest you for working on gas without the correct authority, unlike the iee wiring regulations which are non statutory but can be used against you in a court of law in the case of an accident!... In effect the iee wiring regulations are law unless you can prove it wrong in court.... When governance speak about regulatory burden on business what they actually mean alot of the time is getting rid of standards that lets say... Build nuclear power stations... I know a bit about the (lack of) regulation that caused the 2008 financial crisis. Although that was a perfect storm of bad laws and bad regulation. You can thank Bill Clinton for the financial services modernisation act, without which credit default swaps wouldn't be legal and without which the crash wouldn't have been possible. American readers could also not vote for his wife. But also the regulators failed to list credit default swaps as insurance products which could have also prevented the crash. I'm going to admit that Bill was probably too stupid or too busy with cigars and vaginas to foresee what credit default swaps would become so the regulator gets more blame in my opinion. | |||

She's actually been replaced by two people - Jonathan Bartley and Caroline Lucas. Caroline is about as media savvy as her predecessor. She famously challenged George Osborne in parliament with "it is simply irresponsible to imply to borrowing is always bad". He replied with "when is the moment you could stop borrowing and run a surplus?" Anyone hoping she might make good use of the limelight had their optimism destroyed when she replied "you stop borrowing when you can no longer afford to pay back". Facepalm. " Whatever the problems with the Green Party polices or with Ms Lucas politically, I believe there is a need for a political party that puts the environment and our relationship with it at the centre of politics. I not one for being a sandal wearing environmentalist, but a green party with a professional, international, urban focus would get my vote. | |||
