I was watching it this week and it was interesting. I remember back in the 80's as a kid in sweden, they sounded the alarm every monday.

The cold war was the geopolitical, ideological and economic struggle between two world superpowers, the USA and the USSR, it finished 1991, but why did it start between usa and russia? Have you got any conspiracy theories?

.

Why did it start?.

It's pretty obvious really the Russians had taken a different route than the west after the October revolution.

After the second world war things obviously came to a head with nuclear weapons, had it not been for that it would have been a real war and not a cold one.

The American revolutionary war really set in motion a feeling of discontent with the way things were in the west, the French revolution and Napoleon were all wars against wealth disparity, the Russians were no different!.

So whilst both the countries was on different paths, do you reckon it was a unnecessary war? Reports have it that russian submarines intimidated nearby countries by coming near them.

You live on this side of the divide, I'm guessing but if you lived on the other side I'm guessing you'd have stories of western submarines intimidating Russian bases!.

They had great belief in their system, we had great belief in ours and the systems were not compatible, just like vhs and beta Max.... One had to go

London and France

Look at it from a Russian perspective ; ( forget communism for awhile)

As a Russian you would be concerned about invasion from the west

Sweden invaded Russia in 1709

Napoleon invaded Russia and got as far as Moscow.

During the Russian Revolution: in 1918, British, US, French, plus some Austrskian, Canadian, Italian, Estonian and Czech troops invaded Russia to support the country Revolution against the communists.

Hitler invaded in WW2.

Russians have a long land border.

After WW2, they were concerned to secure thier borders, and then were ideologically opposed to the other WW2 allies.

At Yalta, Roosevelt, Churchill and Stalin divided up Europe ( and Germany).

Russia and the US were the two great powers.

A Russian would see Thousands of US troops massed near its borders, plus NATO massing.

Of course they would be suspicious ( from their perspective)

Then a technological race began.

And so on....

Yes and I thought there was a war going on as you heard it for the first time, bit scary as you didn't know what was going on, but afterwards they told what it was.

Quotes a great Billy Bragg song -

"If you think that the Russians want War."

"Mistrust and differing ideologies. Quite simple yet utterly pathetic really."

You forget the impact of Stalin's paranoia following the US's dropping of the Bomb on Japan in '45.
