3 million EU citizens are staying

Regardless of any Brexit deal, nearly 3 million EU citizens will be able to stay in the UK due to the fact that they have lived here for more than 5 years and already have the permanent right to reside in the UK according to a study published by thr Social Market Foundation and reported in the Times today. The future residency status of just 600,000 people is what is up for negotiations post article 50.

I can only assume that there will be quite a few people who didn't realise this when heading into the polling booth.

I think that's only fair to let them stay and become part of the U.K. As they have been here for so long.

Likewise it should be the same for ex pats living in other EU countries

If we got rid of all the workers from else where the economy would collapse.

However we should gain control over who come's in in the future. Then just maybe we can start to sort things out over the next 10yrs or so. I am not a fan of multiculturalism we all need to pull in the same direction irrelevant of your culture or religion .

Democracies are designed to stop everyone pulling in the same direction!

Was mentioned in the campaign and no problems here with that, as long as controlled moving forward a fantastic solution.

The brexit campaign were also backtracking on the immigration promises only a matter of days after the referendum now saying what we wanted was control which doesn't necessarily mean less immigrants post brexit comming in .nice bit of political rhetoric I think

Please stop projecting a falsehood you have no way of substantiating into some sort of 'discussion'. No one knows why people voted as they did. I never saw another box asking 'Why?' Did you?

For the record I knew that would be the case as Vote Leave repeatedly made that statement. I guess you missed it

What will not be happening is the extra 3 million arriving here in the next 16 years that Gideon Osborne said would come here in his '£4300 forecast'.

Funny thing is, the OP started another thread earlier about not getting personal during political debates. Well this thread is not a political debate at all, just a pathetic attempt to insult peoples intgelligence.

People can see you for what you are OP, but I will refrain from giving my opinion as it just gets me a 48 hour ban

Well there had been quite a lot of polling done analysing who voted and why. As you can see here:

lordashcroftpolls.com/2016/06/how-the-united-kingdom-voted-and-why/

In this survey it show that immigration was the second biggest reason why people voted to leave.

To that you can add the vox pops pieces all over the media such as the chap who, when ask why he voted to leave, said "to get the Muslims out"

Then there has also been people leafleting and putting up posters and spray painting signs telling people to "go home". I would suggest that perhaps those people weren't aware that people would be staying.

Yes, again the Leave campaign strongly gave the impression that immigration would be reduced, not simply controlled. Daniel Hannan couldn't even give a reassurance that it would be controlled downwards, it might be "controlled" upwards.

In fact before the referendum the Tories had a manifesto promise to reduce immigration to less than 100,000, a policy that has subsequently been scrapped.

It's not 600,000 future residency. It's only right that the people already here should stay - and this is what was said by Brexit campaign.

The future immigration from the EU into the UK was, just days before the referendum, projected by the government to be an average of about 250,000 over the next decade - so 2.5 Million - not 600,000 already here that have not been here for long. And remember that the government has a track history of underestimating EU immigration.

That's 250,000 per year, by the way.

Yes, and then when they tell someone else why they voted then two people know don't they? The survey I mentioned was over 12,000 people telling other people about themselves, how they voted and why.

You can get a pretty accurate reason why some voted the way the did when many proudly splash it on social media platforms like facebook ..

Not sure how accurate a reflection of why people voted some 12,000 posting online is when no one knows if they were Brexiters, Leavers or non voters. And I am not sure how 0.07% of those voting Leave is a representative sample even if they WERE all Leave voters (12,000 out of 17 Million).

Just sounds like its a bit of a solution looking for a problem ....

I just wish we could move on from the slightly distasteful inferences, the moaning and eternal doom and gloom by those who lost the vote. Jog on folks we are leaving the EU and we will have a brilliant future outside of it....

I've read it. The main reason to leave was sovereignty.... by an absolute country mile. 12369 people responded to the poll, and of these just 2100 cited immigration as their main reason to vote leave.

In an interview yesterday Jacek Wrona a former Central Bureau Investigation officer from Poland said when speaking about immigration that 'the EU is at the end of existence' and that 'these people live in a void without ideas'. He says that the Balkans are flooded with weapons and that with free movement 2 million people have arrived in western Europe from there including arms dealers, gangsters and drug smugglers and that following the wars in Bosnia and Herzegovina a Kalashnikov can be bought for peanuts.

I can only assume that some people didn't realise things like this when they entered the polling booth

The future residency status of just 600,000 people is what is up for negotiations post article 50.

I can only assume that there will be quite a few people who didn't realise this when heading into the polling booth.

Oh right 'Vox Pops' ... Yes very scientific and accurate. OK we get that now...

Fact remains no matter how you try and talk it up into something it isn't not ONE person knows for sure why people voted the way they did... Apart from themselves

Yes, and then when they tell someone else why they voted then two people know don't they? The survey I mentioned was over 12,000 people telling other people about themselves, how they voted and why.

So less than 0.01% of those who voted leave definitive answer not!!!"

Proof that no one knows who voted what NOT ...with social many people know who voted which way ....

Does no one on here know how polls work? The anti-intellectualism seen in both the Brexit campaign and on forums is getting very tiring. If people think that its a good idea to try and run the country without experters, expertise or training then our economy and our world standing is going to crash a lot lot harder than anyone can possibly imagine.

Would these be the same 'polls' that got the General election result wrong. And got the EU Referendum wrong. And the Bookies can't be all that because they got Leicester City wrong as well.

Look give up with the twisting and turning. And what the hell is 'anti-intellectualism'. Is this a new 'ism' Remoaners are now floating on here?

What someone says in a 'poll' a month after the event has absolutely NO relevance to the result at all.

And again thanks for confirming my earlier statement was correct and it was some 12,000 people against some 17.4 Million who voted Leave. Or 0.07% as I said.

And you shoot down your own argument when you say "I am confident I know how you voted". Confidence isn't the same as knowing. I am confident there is a God but I do not know ...
