Whilst I'm no fan of his policies, country or much else. But, if you watch his speeches on YouTube, Putin is actually an awesome public speaker.

I'm not saying I believe what he says but the way he speaks is everything that Trump, Clinton, Obama and most of the UK politicians aren't. He's clearly very intelligent, well measured, uses clever logic, speaks directly and and doesn't rush to the lowest common denominator.

Anyone else watched some of his speeches?

I like his style, no hand waving or anything like that, just sits and tells it like it is.

I like the way he handles this question here: https://youtu.be/JBTBBNOtbhM

I just don't think our politicans are capable of this. You can imagine Trump frothing at the mouth and shouting in response this type of question. Or if it was Corbyn then he'd start rambling about a right wing media conspiracy.

Putin just destroys this guy in the nicest way possible!

Always said the UK needs strong leaders similar to the way Putin presents himself

Miliband was the beginning of the end for Labour as he is such a bloody wimp, we need strong leaders in power.

What I resent is politicians who think they have to dumb everything down for us and therefore don't speak in any meaningful language. They speak but they don't say anything.

When Putin talks about missile defence systems, Iran, ISIS or anything complex - he still manages to be crystal clear whilst using compelling logic, without dumbing anything down to "goodies and baddies" or "good vrs evil" or any of the other cliché shit we've come to expect.

As I say, I don't necessarily believe what he says but his logic is flawless.

Wow funnily enough in the past two weeks ive been watching a lot of his speeches. ..theres a channel on you tube by inessa S, she uploads all his recent speeches and public talks.

I have to say he comes across so well, so intelligent, never using them tv prompt things or scripts.

The west make him out to be an enemy but he doesnt want war at all, I recommend people go watch his speeches and im almost certain your view on him will change.

I have to admit I wish the guy was our prime minister thats for sure.

Yeah I've followed her channel too, and "Russian insider". It's interesting to see what he actually says as opposed to the hysteria that gets reported.

However, I wouldn't take anything that any politician says at face value.

very true

he does come across genuinely not to want conflict and lots of common sense.

It's definitely good to get a new perspective on him than just the western media shows us.

That's because he literally can't afford conflict (financially) but he equally can't afford to regress much further behind with their defence technology (politically).

The problem with backing someone into a corner is quite obvious. The worst part is that a country with limited resources but military threats will logically excel in lower-cost defences like cyber warfare. Because these are newer and less understood, they are incredibly difficult to defend against. Whilst we build £100m fighter planes, they will train geeks to hack the networks, infrastructure and communications those planes rely on.

When you are the new Tsar and can order Russia to do anything then it is easy to have the confidence to say what you like anywhere. Of course being a former secret policeman and having many friends now in top rolls in the KGB also helps give to give him his easy (and at times sinister) confidence.

My worry is that Trump displays the same arrogance before he has been given any power.

I don't see the relevance sorry. Lots of what he says have been responses to journalists, usually ones that weren't favourable to him, so I'm just talking about his prepared speeches.

I don't see any arrogance in what he says either. Trump isn't on the same intellectual level as Putin, neither is Clinton for that matter.

I hope you don't mind but I am going to deal with your points in reverse.

to say Trump and Clinton are not Putin's intellectual equals is at best a distortion. Trump is corrupt and a corrupter who has managed to evade facing justice on numerous occasions and is now one step away from being POTUS. You don't do that by being stupid. Clinton has been in politics one way or another for most of her adult life, she has survived, prospered and is now also one step away from being POTUS so same goes for intellectual ability. I agree that Putin is a very intelligent man, but I do not think his extreme ruthlessness proves him to be more intelligent than the others, and I am not sure he is more ruthless that Trump. The one thing I am sure of is I dont want to see enough power in Trumps hands to find out.

You say that you make your judgements on his prepared speeches and the fact that he does not rush to the lowest common denominator. My answer is quite simple and comes in two parts, firstly all those speeches prove is he has clever speech writers and that he is addressing a different audience than Clinton and Trump. His audience being that of foreign powers, diplomats and the international press corps. Trump and Clinton on the other hand are addressing 'red neck America' and measured speeches using diplomatic language would be lost on them.

Finally you say that you are not heeding what Putin says in unscripted answers to questions asked by hostile journalists because they are just that. But surely they are the comments you need to be judging him by. I am, and like Trump he comes across (to me) as a dangerously arrogant and ruthless demagogue willing to do anything to continue to wield power with an insatiable appetite for more.

No I was saying that even when he goes into unscripted questions his intellect still shows through so it's not just that he has good script writers.

As for Trump and Clinton, the mere fact that one of them will be president does not make them intelligent. Let us not forget that this is the same office George Bush Jnr held... twice.

I would put Putin in with Blair and Obama as great orators with an obviously good educated background.

It's possible to argue that Putin's done more for his people than the other two did for theirs.... And that's really a sign of the times

OK I don't know what Putin sounds like because I can't speak Russian but I'm talking about his choice of words being top notch.

Blair and Obama deliver terrible content in a beautiful manner. Transcripts of their speeches sound like they are written for 6 year olds.

Again, they aren't on his level and in a head to head debate I think Putin would tear Obama a new one.

Personally I wouldn't hire a software developer that wasn't one of the following:

- sporting a pony tail

- morbidly obese

- a owner of more shorts than trousers

Great orators hold they're audience by either means, either their charming and speak well without mumbling but they can be uncharismatic, mumble and look goofy but have something to actually say... Like Eisenstein

One of the defining characteristics of UK and American culture, according to Hofstede, is that people's eyes glaze over when presented with detailed, technical analysis. Our culture says that the person presenting it needs to explain it simply. Other countries are the exact opposite and they believe it's that it's ok to listen to a speech and not understand 100% of it, that individuals should make effort to understand experts.
