"Thinks its a fuck up "

Why a fuck up ? By the time they get it built its going to cost more than the 18 billion they say it will and then electricity will be dearer.

Surely it would make more sense to invest in more eco friendly ways of generating power and ways of making things more efficient so that they us less power.

The problem is it always has to be about profit and not what's good sense, we have this great big lamp in the sky with radiation for years and years to come so why are we wasting it.

That's what we should be looking to utilise not poisoning the planet all of the time.

I agree, smaller, greener projects should be established rather than giant projects like this.

But is is still a massive fuck up that the government was only about 12 hours away from signing the contract when they got cold feet. Even though a single brick has not been laid, I imagine that a Lot of man hours have gone in to getting it to this stage already.

Its worrying that EDF are not even confident that they can build the thing, and having China involved in something so sensitive might not be the most prudent.

I think it is very funny!

So much for 'the UK is open for business'!

Considering how the people of the far east are on 'face' I expect our new PM has done more harm to our economy in one 11th hour cancellation of signing a contract that 6 years of Gidions ideological austerity.

The chancellor was in China 5 days ago and said at a press conference that it was going ahead, now he's put it on hold. It doesn't do his reputation, or Britain's any good at all does it?

You also think paying £93 per MW for the next 35 years is good business!!!

Think ourselves lucky we have bailed out now only spending £2 billion so far.

All these large projects cost far to much and never seem to deliver. We seem to end up footing the bill and get nothing in return.

No, and I never made any personal about what should and shouldn't be done.

However I did comment about how our new government have acted and how I think it will effect the UK.

Funnily enough all the political commentators both in this country and others seem to share my view that this 11th hour decision is very damaging to the UK.

I see you are back to sensible statements again! Do you have multiple personalities or sometimes you come online d*unk?

Anyway, you are spot on here. It's a complete fuck up, very damaging to business. Deals like this are years in the making, investors in the companies watch them and you make a fool of the CEO when you delay it at the last minute. Nobody likes being played for a fool and there are always consequences.

A massive tidal barrage, from somewhere south of Weston-Super-Mare, via Flatholm and Steepholm islands in the channel, ending somewhere on the coast just west of Cardiff would be the best idea. Not only would it be 'free' and 'clean' electricity from the two MASSIVE tides each day (which are completely reliable), it could be used as a rail and road-link to assist both regions' economies as well. The cost of building and maintaining it wouldn't be cheap, but how cheap is the nuclear option...?

There are 2 extremely safe ways to produce large amounts of electric

Combined cycle GAS turbines, not massively expensive to build, they are flexible for load generation, fairly low pollution BUT gas import prices are very RUSSIA dependant which isn't good at all.

COAL, relatively low cost to build, very flexible for load generation, very cheap to buy coal from all over the world BUT higher pollution, though the newer designs are better than the old BUT they have bad press now with the "green issue"

Coal is king for power generation but a dying one.

NUCLEAR, very cheap to produce electric once built, not flexible for load generation though, it's either on or off, hence why once they come online they stay online. Waste here is the main issue and obviously people haven't forgotten Chernobyl.

OIL, cheap to build, cheap to produce, very flexible load generation but very very dirty.

BIOMASS, fairlycheap to build but higher cost of producing electric due to subsidies being removed on the biomass. Still "burns" to produce.

They are currently the only feasible ways to produce large amounts of electric known to man, the rest as in Solar, Wind, water flow, waste to energy are all just pinpricks in an ocean.

I'm not one to deny facts.

There's a few to consider here!.

1 hinkley will not produce cheap energy, it will produce the most expensive nuclear energy anywhere in the world ever! £93 per mwh!!.

2 nuclear isn't cheap and it isn't c02 free, in fact it produces roughly the same c02 levels as other generation until it gets closer to the end of its life cycle, this is because it takes an awful lot of c02 to in its building.

3 nuclear does great base load generation, ie you turn it on and it stays on, they don't wind down very quickly.

4 it's subsidised just like wind and solar and oil and coal.

5 we can do base load without massive c02 and without nuclear, there's brilliant people out there who can do great shit today.... It just takes political will

I think this decisions timing was crass in the extreme! May did not wake up on Friday morning and suddenly realise that she (or her representatives) were signing the deal that day and have a blinding revelation that there may be a serious security issue and she needed time to think! This was a deliberate deliberate act calculated to insult and anger EDF and the Chinese.

She could have cancelled this on the day she took office or any day since. she chose to wait until the last minute knowing full well that some were travelling thousands of miles to attend!

As for my personal opinion about this deal I think it was crazy! Because of Tory ideological opposition to public ownership we have allowed other countries to buy and own our infrastructure, which they run as profit generators and then export that profit to their countries. Effectively the Tories privatisation policies now mean that taxpayers and EDF customers are subsidising the French government! For the Tories to sign a contract tying us into another 50 years of this would be insanity!

The timing of the announcement was utterly shambolic and if Theresa May had anything to do with it she has just made her first up fuck which is a shame as she has got off to a storming start. If it anyone else's decision they should be fired. Now. To make the Chinese look stupid is one BIG mistake. And just as they were leading the way for a new trade deal? Others will now see this as a warning sign we really do not know how to do big decisions any more. A complete and utter f**king fiasco....

Well given she thought she was in a two month Leadership race on Monday the 11th and was Prime Minister on the 13th she moved pretty damn quick to get her Government in place. which she basically did in 24 hours starting with Osborne! That was an impressive achievement especially given who got the key Brexit jobs.

She has made all the right moves regarding UK Administrations and performed well on the European stage visiting many people and she has only been Office 15 days!

I understand your reticence over May as Home Secretary but as PM I think she has started well. Except for Hinckley which may have some dire consequences...

Ah with you. Indeed we have been more than unfriendly to them in times past but I am sure we have been forgiven. I think much of the worry is the politics of China being a Communist State albeit one that plays capitalism rather well to her advantage.

Not sure what planes Germany makes that we buy? Typhoon is a 4 nation project and Tornado was a 3 nation project. We actually upgrade our own Challenger tanks here in the UK ...

Well I was thinking of the A400m but you'll probably say it's french. Either way, we've had a fair few wars with them!

The MOD is selecting companies to upgrade the challenger 2 fleet with rheinmetall as one of the possible suppliers. It's more the fact that they are allowed to even do that job than wether they get the contract or not.

The A400M is actually built in Spain. And Airbus is actually a Dutch company based in France. And Germany. And the UK.... yes it is all very confusing!

The Rheinmetall you mention I am guessing is the smooth bore L55 120mm main gun fitted to the Leopard and Abrams and which NATO is trying to force through as the 'standard'. Challenger has the L30 120mm rifled gun made in the UK. No one else can do a rifled gun that big. The L55 was trialled in a Challenger 10 years ago but was not taken further. It is worth remembering that because of the rifled barrel the Challenger 1 has the longest battlefield kill shot in history at nearly 3 miles!

Your both right.

Maybe you should both be angry at the Tories. The party that brought you 6 years totally unnecessary and utterly toxic austerity that has transferred wealth upwards from the majority to the super rich minority followed by an equally toxic EU referendum that has started a slow-motion economic crash with the added bonus of a new PM who has now reversed a policy at the 11th hour in a way guaranteed to piss off China.

I find myself asking who will they piss off next? And why are they doing this? Is it that the whole of Westminster village are having a temper tantrum because we did not do as we were told and are out to punish the country?

Ill point out that borrowing has doubled in the last 6 years, and that Gideon's austerity has been swept out with him.

If it had been necessary as we have been told for the last 6 years it would not have been so easy to dump.

However I will concede it was a necessary fiction to enable the eaton scum to divert much of what was left of the national wealth to their mates.

But we knew it was going to go up irrespective of who won the 2010 election because the interest repayments are now more than the budget for the ministry of defence.

That comes from reclassifying PFI debt and of course, the bank bailouts. How many European economies do you feel have performed better than the UK since 2010?

To get the French and Chinese to take on the cost of building the plant, the government agreed to pay £92.50 for each unit of electricity: more than double the market price now, almost treble and this is tied in for the next 35 years

so it was a good decision to scrap it

The great thing about capitalism is that if someone can produce the same energy for a cheaper price then they should put their money where their mouth is.

Unfortunately the energy market due to how critical it is is full of cronyism and bribery, no energy type is free from subsidy.

Right now we're in a fourth historical energy transfer, my fear is just like history when we held on to coal the turn of the 20th century were making a bad decision in holding on to the old energy type of oil.

We could be creating the new industry of renewable electricity production that if we're to have any earth worth living in, will be badly needed in the coming decades.

Nuclear is no longer the fuel of the future.... That was 70 years ago and technologically we've moved on

Problem is everything just has to be for profit! If governments were so interested with the green aspect of everything then we as a country would be looking at not for profit utilities nuts for the sake of making it work to benifit both us and the planet.

Anything that involves these big corporations is always going to screw everyone also anything that weeks has such a premium put on it that it's too expensive for ordinary people to invest in such as solar panels if they were cheaper then more people would have gone for them but no they had to let companies in on it and tie people to ridicules contracts

Capitalism is great at ingenuity, it's what it does best!.

It's really just a case of organising your structure to get what you want from capitalism, for instance Germany had the idea to get people into renewables, today they generate about 30% of their electric from individuals, farmers, householders, shops, factories because they put the incentives there for people to invest, they've already got and started a programme to complete remove nuclear from German electric production completely because they found their plants had the same intrinsic liabilities as Fukushima in Japan....

People who say "it's impossible" are really not looking at what's going on in the world, for instance you'll get the... Oh but China are building coal power stations and yes they are but look behind that statement as you see China is well aware of their coal problem, in only twenty years they've created the great London smog all over China, there now committing to renewable energy on a scale the UK could only dream about, entire city's lit up like Vegas already powered on solar led lighting.... The cheapest form of electricity on the UK market today is wind turbine produced.... Nuclear is a great base load generator but it ain't cheap and never has been, the key to any countries successes is "cheap" abundant energy.... Everything else you do is meaningless without that!!!

Really?

Are your reasoning skills that bad? Or is it that you refuse to acknowledge that we are already having to deal with the consequences of brexit?

Just to be clear, I will now prove that brexit is to blame:

caMoron resigned because he lost the referendum.

As a result May got to inherit the office of PM.

May was anti the Hinckley Point deal, but while caMoron was PM was powerless to stop it.

That changed when she became PM.

Therefore:

If there had not been a referendum or the vote had been for remain then caMorn would not have resigned and May would not be PM and the deal would now be signed.

So it follows that Brexit has caused this problem.

Quod erat demonstrandum!

"Problem is everything just has to be for profit! If governments were so interested with the green aspect of everything then we as a country would be looking at not for profit utilities nuts for the sake of making it work to benifit both us and the planet.

Anything that involves these big corporations is always going to screw everyone also anything that weeks has such a premium put on it that it's too expensive for ordinary people to invest in such as solar panels if they were cheaper then more people would have gone for them but no they had to let companies in on it and tie people to ridicules contracts "

Have a look at the societies that did away with profit and whether ordinary people ended up with more or less as a result.

I should have pointed out that EVERY single empire EVER built their wealth on cheap abundant energy!.

The Romans on slaves

The British on coal

The US on oil

.

.

The fourth Reich will be built on the country that gets the "next" energy first

Hinkley was "approved " on the basis that fuel prices would continue to increase and the level of subsidy set accordingly. On that basis there was a saving of 36 billion which made it just about break even. With shale oil and dropping prices that saving is now 6 billion.

Then again coming from a country with no nuclear power I gaze in wonderment at the logic that says that because nuclear waste has a half life of 100s of thousands of years therefore you can't ever calculate the total cost of storing it therefore you just ignore it.

Genius. Utter genius. I wish I had sort of smarts myself. ..

The first European nation to engage in the Transatlantic Slave Trade was Portugal in the mid to late 1400's. Captain John Hawkins made the first known English slaving voyage to Africa, in 1562, in the reign of Elizabeth 1. Hawkins made three such journeys over a period of six years. He captured over 1200 Africans and sold them as goods in the Spanish colonies in the Americas.

To start with, British traders supplied slaves for the Spanish and Portuguese colonists in America. However, as British settlements in the Caribbean and North America grew, often through wars with European countries such as Holland, Spain and France, British slave traders increasingly supplied British colonies

The exact number of British ships that took part in the Slave Trade will probably never be known but, in the 245 years between Hawkins first voyage and the abolition of the Slave Trade in 1807, merchants in Britain despatched about 10,000 voyages to Africa for slaves, with merchants in other parts of the British Empire perhaps fitting out a further 1,150 voyages.

Historian, Professor David Richardson, has calculated that British ships carried 3.4 million or more enslaved Africans to the Americas.

Only the Portuguese, who carried on the trade for almost 50 years after Britain had abolished its Slave Trade, carried more enslaved Africans to the Americas than the British (the most recent estimate suggests just over 5 million people).

We abandon slavery in 1830 odd coincidentally just after the late 1700s advancement in steam engines which gave you cheap coal... Coal was everywhere, incredibly cheap and gave you a great energy return on energy invested.... Far better than slavery ever could!.

Many countries continued with slavery for many other reasons, like the Barbary coast, usa, middle East, India..... But ours was always about cheap energy

It's a bit hard to tell what your original point was because of the grammar but I took it to mean that the British Empire benefitted from slaves as much as it did coal?

I pointed out that the British did not run around Africa to capture ~12m people who were forcibly removed from their home. It was largely other Africans who captured the would-be slaves and sold them on to the British (and others) who in turn sold them on again.

That's directly relevant to your point. Now what did your reply have to do with mine?

That's my exact point, you can use human energy(man power)(slavery) but it's nowhere near as cheap as coal, oil and electricity, it was a lack of actual demand that brought the end to slavery, not a great moral crusade.... Who wants to pay for 5000 African slaves to pick your cotton when you can do it with a machine that runs for 6 bucks an hour!.

.

.

So if we want a foot hold on the world economy, we need cheap abundant energy and your not going to get that with fossil fuels over the next 20-50 years, nuclear has never been cheap despite the common held belief... The future lies in renewables, if you want proof just look at what the Chinese are investing in, there not daft you know, take all your electronic touch screen gear, you need rare earth's to make them, the Chinese cornered that market years ago, if you want a smart phone building you need rare earth's, the Chinese go sure we'll sell you some.... just one question, where do you want to put your factory, shanghai, Beijing....
