I haven't seen anyone say that no one will trade with us. Just that it will take years for these deals to be signed and up into force.

No I'm asking if we charge import duties on Australian or Chinese or India goods at the moment then if we do a tariff free deal with those countries that will be a loss of duty to the UK government therefore somehow the UK government will have to make up that loss

So you answered but you havnt got a clue how much of a loss to uk revenue it will be ..

Imports from outside the EU are treated differently. You:

•must make an import declaration to customs

•generally have to pay import duty and import VAT (plus VAT on import duty)

The EU has everything to do with it. They create trade and tariff barriers for non-EU countries to protect the Single Market from real competition. And they do it by demanding we all surrender our ability to do Trade deals. And why we have a problem with staff now (soon sorted).

Outside the EU we can agree whatever Tariffs are mutually acceptable or none at all. Under WTO rules Australia cannot be discriminated against so I assume their rates of duty are the same as every other country exporting to the EU countries. Which means they face high duty barriers which cost us when we buy goods.

are you confused if we charge non EU countries import duty now any free trade deal in future will be a loss of revenue for the UK government .so somebody somewhere in the UK will be taxed more to make up the shortfall in UK government revenue ..

I thought I would do some digging on what level of trade we are talking about here, the data which took a bit of tracking down but eventually found it on the website of the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade. It is worth noting that this is the 2013-2014 data and is in A$.

Overall the Australians import 12,434,000,000 from the UK and export 7,854,000,000 in goods and services. The UK was Australias 9th biggest export market and 7th biggest import market.

Total imports of goods into Australia from the UK 6,338,794,000 (2.5% of Australias total goods imports) which is dominated by motor vehicles and medicines (including vetinary products). Exports of goods from Australia to the UK 3,686,285,000 (1.4% of Australias total goods exports) dominated by gold, lead, alcoholic drinks, coal, pearls and gems.

Well I just wasted 15 minutes looking for that post. Give us a clue where it is? And by the way it wasn't in the part to which I was referring. But care to tell us how many other posters agreed / disagreed with it? THAT is the point I was making.

To the second most popular post saying:

Some 575 people agreed and 60 disagreed.

The lowest rated post was one taking the piss out of the idea and "Miserable foolish brits," (the sort of crap you come out with) and had 80 supporters. But 299 people disagreed.

It was in a link that failed to work but got it sussed. The ACTUAL post read:
