""Why, Mr Prime minister, despite your promise to eradicate the UK's debt during your first tenure as pm (five years), your government has managed to somehow (despite the chancellor's austerity measures) increase said debt?. That or what is your favourite cheese?. " Good questions!

"You are right, he pledged to bring down or pay down debt by creating budget surplus. Instead we have a deficit higher than before and his balancing the books was to borrow 500 billion in five years. Something Labour didn't do in thirteen. To me that equals more debt than before. " You make the usual mistake of confusing deficit with debt. Every year we have a deficit the debt increases. When you decrease the deficit as Cameron did you only reduce the rate in increase of borrowing not the borrowing itself. But given the way the economy was run our costs of borrowing actually fell substantially (another debate). Hence the push for a 'balanced budget' as John Major basically left Tony Blair. As to how much Labour borrowed? The total borrowed was about £476 Billion. Gordon Brown ran a surplus for the first 3 years (a total of some £36 Billion) as he stuck to Major's spending plans. From 2001 borrowing increased year by year so that by 2010 he had borrowed that £476 Billion. In 2009 / 10 the annual deficit was some £153 Billion. Last year it was about £72 Billion. That is more than half. http://www.economicshelp.org/blog/334/uk-economy/uk-national-debt/ I hope this helps.
