It seems as though Cameron is really trying to smash the Labour party, well its leadership mainly, to bits by announcing a vote on Trident this month.

Will Corbyn survive this?

Just as Labour was due to conclude their review - if they speed things up a tad, perhaps a decent cross party debate will be had

But a long time before the membership will get a chance to vote on accepting it or not.

Will Britain survive this!!

This is the one thing that is high on the list to persuade Scots to go for Independence. This is on Scotland's door step and may be the final thing that pulls Scots away.

If so? where will you re-home Trident?

close to your home?

More than likely in Barrow or on the Cumbrian coast. God knows they need the employment and the boats are built there after all. Plus its near where all the nuclear nasties are held

I hope the Nappies do object. Bring the subs to England. And if they get a bit shitty and go on about IndyRef2 just start building a Type 26 in Portsmouth. Independence in Scotland will die in a day ...

I haven't seen any plans to relocate the subs to Cambridge but perhaps!

I know Sturgeon is anti, but what about the rest of Scotland? Surely it would be devastating to the local economy to lose such a large base?

I would think the Milford Haven, Ilfracombe areas of the Bristol channel would be high on the list of possible sites because they give direct access to the Atlantic.

I hate this misconception the Trident is only based in Scotland.

It shows a lack of research into the matter. The subs are based here, but the main warheads and entry systems are maintained and decomissioned at Aldermaston and Burghfield-

"Aldermaston

As the company's headquarters, AWE’s Aldermaston site covers approximately 750 acres. Once a wartime airfield, today Aldermaston is a centre of excellence housing advanced research, design and manufacturing facilities.

Burghfield

Formerly a munitions factory, AWE Burghfield is a 225 acre site where we assemble and maintain warheads while in service and then decommission them when out of service. It’s complex work that requires the expertise of everybody that works at Burghfield."

Both of these facilities are just outside Reading.

Also most of the UK's command and control infrastructure eg GCHQ and Northolt are in the South of the Uk and would be just as much of a prime target.

So if the Russians ever did decide to throw the big switch, you could bet that all 3 targets would be high priority.

Personally, I think I'd rather fry quickly than die of lingering radiation poisoning. Radiation does not recognise international boarders. cf Chernobyl.

I don't think we need a system as big/expensive as Trident, but I do believe we need some form of system in place. cf. Seven days to The Rhein. (Russian cold war plan)

Don't forget the GPS satellites that are also key to the system, but I think most people use Trident as shorthand for nuclear missiles on nuclear submarines.

I think if you are going to have a nuclear deterrent, it needs to be protected against a first strike. The best way to do that is a continuous at sea deterrent.

Well the alternatives would be to buy from another friendly nuclear power, I think that only France would be a viable option, or alternatively to design a new system domestically. I think to create a new system ourselves would be incredibly timely and expensive.

Of course a cheaper way to do it would be a ground based, or air launched system, but these are at risk of being destroyed in a first strike. The Americans ran a permanent in air deterrent for decades, always having bombers armed with nuclear weapons flying around the US so even if the bases were destroyed, the bombers would already be in the air. This most have cost a huge amount in planes, fuel and maintenance. You also have the danger of an accident or a crash which isn't great. Also America had a vast amount of air space in comparison to the UK. Another reason why this wouldn't be viable for the UK is that we lack any strategic bombers, so they would also have to be purchased.

Funny thing...

Historical fact...

The only reason we were sold Polaris (forerunner to Trident) is because the last H bomb we exploded at Bikini Atoll had the largest yield of any H bomb ever exploded, and the yanks could not match it. So they made a deal where we stopped our development of delivery systems (our rocket program) and our independent nuclear deterrent and the USA would supply us with a working independent warhead and delivery system. Of course as soon as we dismantled our programs they reneged on the deal by keeping control of the trigger. (All a matter of public record but kept very hidden as both the US and our government don't like to talk about it. Much like they don't like to talk about how the US defrauded us of the jump jet technology or the way to build a sub-critical atomic mass and then make it cascade. The critical theoretical knowledge needed to build an atomic bomb.)

By the way I am in favour of us having nukes, just not in the USA having the ultimate say in if we use them.

Portsmouth as with the east coast would be tactically poor locations for submarine bases but, unless I'm miss-reading the earlier post wasn't the suggestion. The suggestion seemed to me to relate to building the Type 26 in Portsmouth something large sections of the population would support. Loss of warship construction to Scottish yards, primarily for political reasons, was definately not a good thing for the city.

Where on earth do you infer I dislike Scotland? Where did I say that? I was having a pop at the SNP (aka Nappies down here) and there endless calls for independence. And I was making the point that some in England would be grateful for the investment and employment that goes with a Trident sea base. if the SNP do not want it send it South.

One could say as long as Scotland returns an SNP Government that is also Scotlands thinking.

Personally I couldn't comment....

It's interesting that MPs get to vote on this. There's a specialist Ministry of Defence and it should choose the weapons it needs to do its job.

Why the opinion of a bunch of half-informed generalists should potentially trump that - I'm not sure? Are they going to vote on which brand of computers the NHS should buy next?!?

Just to correct a slight misunderstanding. The UK Trident system is entirely independent of the USA once boats are under way. When in port for servicing or replenishment the USA has a say in the rotation of the missiles (not the warheads) as they are maintained in Florida on a pooled basis. They are in no way dependent on US guidance, satellites or even GPS systems. The fact that the PM's first duty after seeing the Queen is to write letters of last resort to each of the 4 Trident Captains (in her own handwriting) demonstrates this. The system is designed to still be used even if the UK has been attacked and severely damaged if the PM so chooses although there are 4 options:

* Retaliate with nuclear weapons;

* Not retaliate;

* Use his own judgement;

* Place the submarine under an allied country's command, if possible, and specifically Australia or the United States.

Technically, the government does not need a vote to renew the nuclear subs.

It is, however, a subject that people feel strongly about and therfore a vote was deemed appropriate.

The cynic in me says that the government might also have thought it might cause a bit more trouble within the Labour ranks.

Oh, and I am for Subby McFuckYourRace.

Can I confess to great bouts of Schadenfreude as the Labour party twist and squirm over Trident, the SNP do the same over Brexit and are now having spasms over Trident.

I think as part of the Trident replacement we should just remove the subs from Faslane and stick them in Cumbria or Devonport or wherever in England (or Wales) that needs the investment and employment. We should then say the first 3 Type 26 Frigates will be built in Portsmouth or Tyneside or Belfast and not on the Clyde.

Let some Scots people feel the harsh wind of reality of what happens when the SNP keep banging on about Independence.

No defence equipment is too expensive to be built in the UK. The government loves subsidising the defence industry.

Can I ask a Scottish person why they don't like them? Not personally, so much as what is the mood of the country? Is it because you are worried about a disaster? A target for terrorism? The moral component to the nucleae argument?

errr .. BAE Systems were granted a £675 Million contract in March to start the manufacture of production systems on the Clyde and equipment and to finalise production design (of the Type 26). This follows on from £ Millions that have been spent on specifications and advanced design work already. And given the Type 23s are nearing the end of their lives the Type 26s WILL be built. I just think now they should be built in England, Wales or N. Ireland where people will appreciate the work.

After all more of the two carriers was built in England than in Scotland. Rosyth was only chosen as the assembly point because Brown was their MP! It was in totally the wrong place, we already had dry docks and cranes big enough in Belfast and Rosyth had never even built a ship let alone a carrier! Belfast has launched a few big ships in its time.

So we already had the politics played with the Carriers to keep the Scots happy (at a premium of £80 million). We already had Portsmouth closed to keep the Scots happy at huge cost to the local people and yet we STILL have this woman dictating to us again? Well she can sod off. Enough is enough.

"Can I confess to great bouts of Schadenfreude as the Labour party twist and squirm over Trident, the SNP do the same over Brexit and are now having spasms over Trident.

Yous will be welcome to them as the majority of scots dont want them in our country and as for the frigates that was all just a lie in the run up to the indy referendum there is no way these vessels are going to get built in any part of the uk as its too expensive

I think if check they have been put on hold until it can be done for 500 million which cant be done also the last time i looked scotland is still part of the uk so why shouldnt the be biult on the clyde if they get built in uk at all so enough of your bitterness against scotland and just have a look at what westminester is doing to your own country by running up trillions of debt

to me it is the biggest waste of scrap metal that will never be used and the money can be used elsewhere,i live 4 miles from faslane and there have been a few accidents you should chech it out under the free informations act some of the things that have happend coz you wont hear about it on the news

How does one 'use' a deterrent?

But that statement was that it "will never be used", a deterrent doesn't have to be fired to act as a deterrent. Equally I could name countries that have benefitted from having nukes.

" I think if check they have been put on hold until it can be done for 500 million which cant be done "

Any sources, facts or quotes or is this just a little point scoring swipe?

" also the last time i looked scotland is still part of the uk so why shouldnt the be biult on the clyde if they get built in uk at all "

Jeeez ... this is getting tedious. Do you actually read posts? I said because the SNP are banging on (again) about an IndyRef we should let the chill winds of reality blow down Faslane and the Clyde by placing the sub base elsewhere (as you Scots don't want it) and build the Type 26 in Portsmouth. BECAUSE OF THE THREAT OF INDEPENDENCE!! And one might argue as England and Wales and N. Ireland are in the UK why shouldn't they have a bite of the pie as well?

" so enough of your bitterness against scotland and just have a look at what westminester is doing to your own country by running up trillions of debt "

You said that crap elsewhere. I despise the SNP and Sturgeon for what they have done to the UK and Scotland and their ambition to destroy the UK. That is NOT the same as hating Scotland which I happen to admire and love. We clear now?

Yes those £ Billions run up by Wee Laddie Brown who then fucked off and disappeared.....

Given the costs of the SNP deficit was some £15 Billion last year that was about 21% of the UK deficit.

Wales ran up a similar deficit of £14.7 Billion which was about 20%.

http://www.walesonline.co.uk/news/wales-news/15bn-tax-deficit-heart-wales-11131738

Northern Ireland ran up a Deficit of £9.2 Billion or some 13%.

So some £40 billion of a £70 Billion deficit was from the three smallest nations in the UK. And England carries the cost of Defence, Foreign aid, Foreign relations and other matters as well.

Your point was exactly?

"I am sure we all pay our taxes equally in the UK"

I am sure we do as well. That isn't the point. when a Government takes in £100 in equally paid taxes but spends £120 it has a £20 deficit which has to be funded. In a sovereign State that is done by Government Bonds (Gilts). In Scotland's case it is funded the £20 by the English and the debt is added to the UK debt. See above.

Taxes are less than half the story ...

What part of 'the SNP isn't Scotland' are you struggling with exactly?

And yes I am a confirmed Unionist and we all are equal within the United Kingdom but forgive me for responding to people who seek to rubbish England, somehow think Scotland can stand on its own when patently it cannot and especially those who call me a 'RACIST'?

But as I keep reminding people: This year its YOU in Scotland who will have to find an extra £15 billion to fund the SNP's spending not the English who have been supporting the Scottish people for years. And we have done it quite happily and with love of our Scottish neighbours. "Its what we do". That was until the SNP turned it all into a vicious self serving political war. While you Scots keep returning the SNP the 300 year relationship with England will deteriorate more and more.
