Manchester City charges

I know it's sports. But recent developments have made it political.

For context, the premier league has found Manchester City guilty of 114 out of 115 charges levelled against them. The investigation revealed that Manchester City has funneled about £830 million into the club using sham contracts, that breaks the fair play rules.

Clubs like Everton who were caught for much less serious issues were punished hard in the past. So one would expect Manchester City to face tough punishments.

Where it gets complicated is that the UAE government is connected to Manchester City's ownership and they have threatened Burnham that they will pull out billions in investments. Burnham's initial statements were diplomatic and showed that he doesn't want to antagonise them.

What do you think should be the outcome? Punish Manchester City to save football or give them a slap on the wrist to protect billions of their investments in the country?

Punish them regardless of threats from wealthy owners, giving in to such threats is a slippery slope..

Agreed. I follow the premier League and letting Manchester City get away with this will be the end of it for me. I will just find some other hobby.

Essex and London

Strip them of their titles, and an enormous points deduction. It’s a shame a punishment can’t be demanded from the EFL after premier league relegation too - I’d see them moved to league 2 if it were possible.

Regarding them being stripped of their titles, though - those years should just have an asterisk and ‘no champion’ - you can’t just gift a title to the second placed team.

The argument they will make in appeal is that they are in effect state funded and not owner funded

The argued the exact opposite when it came to the UEFA ffp case, and to the us government when they were looking into funding of American teams under the city group banner

The lever of economic funding being held shows to me they are worried

I don't see any conflict here. It's the government that wants to keep the investment, but they don't run the Premier League. It's the FA that gets to make footballing decisions, and they don't care about investment elsewhere.

That's called appeasement, and appeasing others always ends in compromising the appeaser.

.

Personally, I would tell to UAE to sling their hook. It's about time those with oodles of moolah were put in their place and were made to realise that no, they cannot buy what they like or co-oerce others to do their bidding.

Strip them of their titles and expel them from the league. Not only have they cheated over at least a decade, they tried to delay and obstruct the investigation at every step, and even now are still claiming innocence and a conspiracy.

The time must fit the crime or it sends a message to other gulf state owners that they can do similar. But exactly what they chose is very difficult. It's the greed culture at the club. The very well paid players never asked where the money came from either. Just took it and played football.

The PL clubs won’t let City leave the PL , they bring in too much money that gets redistributed amongst them.

As a United fan, I would be interested to know what OmarBerrada has to say about this, as he was involved at City during this period

It's ok saying the pl won't let them leave because they bring in to much money.but before they got all there dirty money they was just a bang average club. Sheffield Wednesday.w.b.a. Birmingham City to name a few was all bigger than man cheaty.they are trying to bribe the pleasure now.it won't work.drop them down the league as far as possible.give them 60 points deduction for the next 5 seasons.transfer ban for 8 years.and compensate all the money they owe to other clubs.and that's from a blackpool fan

What I didn't realise until today is that City chairman Al Mubarak is also chief executive of the Emirates soveriegn wealth fund. That takes conflict of interest to a whole new level.

Burnham needs to be very worried as this could turn out to be his Mandelson moment.

What did he know? When did he know it? How many (if any) freebies did he get as mayor of Manchester?

Those are the questions that will come in due course. And he'd better have some good bloody answers.

Oh I do think the other PL clubs will let City leave (get kicked out of) the league.

Worldwide City don't generate anything like Man Utd, Liverpool, Arsenal, Spurs Etc. Well not legitimately anyway. On the whole revenue loss will be minimal.

I've read some hysterical stories about cancelling TV contracts. Why on earth would that happen?

Take a quick look at the Championship table. West Ham, Wolves and West Brom are all in the promotion mix and all have good fan bases. Even Swansea (who top the league at the moment) are well supported. And the other 19 PL clubs will still be there.

City would like us to think that the PL revolves around them. It doesn't and hopefully they are soon going to find out.

As for Berrada I think he has got some serious questions to answer if he is to remain at Man Utd.

They are worried for sure. It would be interesting to how the club's fans see.

The environment at Anfield next week is going to be wild.

It looks like the judicial panel is appointed by all the premier league clubs. That does reduce the chances of unfair outcome and government interference.
