700 prisoners have been released

Including those convicted of domestic abuse among other stuff.

I think it's ridiculous a woman has had to flee the UK because her abuser has been released.

It's terrible... I fear for the world we live in now

Lack of current prison capacity has got more to do with the Tory years of austerity. Labour have only been in power two years.

Beggars belief a country of this size can’t accommodate 700 prisoners when it can house 40,000 small boat arrivals.

In other news Labour were supposed to be building 1,500,000 news homes. Chatting the same shit as Boris Johnson’s 40 new hospitals.

Am sorry you feel this way but with only 1100 spear place the prison system is full so yes sum have been released early, but they where always going to be released so its the same pain for victims, but a year early. Its not good but unless we bring back the death penalty for lifers, what is the choice 🤔. For me it bring the death penalty back.

The 700 is not the problem it's the, estimated 1,350 to 1,450 people that are newly received into prison custody from courts each week in England and Wales, if there is not space where do they go...

we need the death penalty for the ones who have 100 per cent committed murder.but he could of let out the 700 who had been put in prison for texts.or people who haven't paid there t.v. licence. Not scum abusers who have attacked women.i feel so sorry for those ladies who are going to be so scared tonight and every night for the rest of there lives.

It is awful to read this and there are sectors of these people who are more likely to reoffend with violence…

Sadly in the 14 years of Tory government jails have closed, population of offenders has grown

Coupled with a lack of prison staff and retention

A double “Whammy “ as they used to say!

With prisons at capacity and difficulties hiring and retaining prison officers, he had no choice. More prisons need to be built, and perhaps more importantly we need to address the reasons behind offending and custodial sentences in the first place.

First you have to pay to build them, then you have to staff them too. The Tories ignored the problem for over a decade and this is the result.

The fact we have a revolving door of PM's sis a good indicator of how fucked the country is. No PM has taken responsibility of the problem.

You cannot have mass immigration inflating a population, including a large amount of criminals in rubber boats, while not building the services. In this case prisons.

The government has been shutting prisons since at least Cameron was in power. This is a British government and Treasury guided decision, not a party one.

Guy on the news saying he'll go straight to re offend as he has nowhere to live and his bail condition will be broken ,so he may as well go shoplift and get put back inside.

At what cost to taxpayer??

Build more prisons, make them similar to US model where they are a business and have to fund themselves partly by manufacturing products, and stop UK government wasting money buying cheap crap from China.

Look at the amount of prisoners being held on indefinite sentences for minor offences, there was a news report of a lad who knocked a bike and been in jail for 5 years and counting....

ANY foreign nationals who commit a crime that results in A prison sentence should be immediately and automatically deported to place of birth with any right to live and work in UK be immediately revoked.

Except terrorist who should be locked up in solitary confinement with no access to others in a purpose built prison not some out dated victorian shit hole.

Domestic abuse victims have fled rh country and it's easy to say "get a restraining order on them" yeah that doesn't protect a woman when the guy is at her house threatening to hurt her and she calls the police and they tell you to lock your doors and windows like that's going to help. There is a lot of whataboutery in this thread, and that is exactly the attitude that allows governments to be less effective and lose all accountability.

It doesn’t matter which political party is in charge. They responsible for the Civil Service, public policy and the security of the country, then it is their job to ensure that government delivers the services needed to protect the country and its citizens.

The ask really isn’t complicated, stop losing taxpayers money to fraud, stop spending it on causes that provide little or no real benefit to the country, tackle the abuse of the endless benefits system rather than allowing welfare to become a lifestyle choice, and redirect that money into services and infrastructure that benefit the people whose taxes fund them.

We can argue and do about which party did what, when, but that doesn’t change the basic principle, the government of the day is responsible for how public money is spent and for the effectiveness of the services it provides.

It really should be that simple.

"If it’s a capacity problem, maybe they could get the short stays in categories C & D to sleep ten to a cell on a Penny Hang (without necessarily paying a penny) ?"

On 10 July 2023, the House of Commons Public Accounts Committee took evidence from senior Home Office officials as part of its inquiry into the Asylum Transformation Programme.

During that hearing, Simon Ridley of the Home Office told the Committee that the Department was maintaining a buffer of close to 5,000 empty hotel beds so that accommodation would be immediately available in the event of a sudden increase in arrivals through Manston.

Dame Diana Johnson, then Chair of the Home Affairs Committee, sought clarification:

“You are keeping 5,000 beds empty, just in case.”

The Committee Chair subsequently established that these were hotel rooms and that the taxpayer was paying for this spare capacity even while it remained unused.

This raises an obvious question about the effective use of taxpayer-funded accommodation.

Could those 5,000 unused hotel places at a cost on average of £120 per night, amounting to approximately £600,000 every day, or £219 million over a full year be used to house now homeless ex cons?

At the same time, the prison and probation system faces serious pressures surrounding accommodation for people leaving custody. Government figures show that a significant proportion of prison leavers are homeless or without settled accommodation, while Ministry of Justice statistics demonstrate a strong association between homelessness following release and subsequent reoffending.

Its reasonable to ask whether taxpayer funded hotel capacity that would otherwise stand empty could, where operationally, contractually and legally possible, be made temporarily available to suitable prison leavers who would otherwise be homeless, at at risk of reoffending to get rehoused in HM prisons.

And I assume to fund this you would increase general taxation.

Prisons are expensive and even once built it costs about 60k a year to house 1 person in a prison.

So by letting 700 out they just saved about £42 million.

Prisons should be modelled on CECOT in El Salvador.

I doubt very much that the per prisoner cost is 60k under that regime.
