Sweden elections

From the land of haribos.

Sweden goes to the polls today and it is set out to be a very close one, practically a tie.

The preditions are that the left is ahead with 175 seats whilst the right is right behind them with 174 seats.

They always predict the left will be ahead but most of the time the right will win it, the left always have problem to form a government.

An interesting thing is that the sweden democrats could enter the executive for the first time after four years supporting it from the outside.

It would be interesting to see who you think will win it. I reckon the right wing block will win it

It boils down to whether the Swedes trust the left wing parties on immigration and asylum as they have promised to be as strict on the issue as the right wing parties. The same left wing parties opened up their borders during the 2016 refugee crisis and that didn't go well with the electorate. Now they have changed their stance. Looks like the results are going to be very close.

Sweden is somewhat unrecognisable from the more tolerant and liberal democratic values it held and it's sad that has happened, with racist leaning tropes slipping into more of the mainstream . I hope this is temporary and it reverts to more of how it was, plus left leaning wins coming

What evidence do you have to say that they have become racist? Their asylum policy in 2016 had a lot of negative impact on their country. So it's natural for them to turn the other way. The right wing party won and implemented what they promised.

Even the left wing party that opened the borders for the asylum seekers during the 2016 crisis admitted during the last election campaign that their asylum policy was a mistake.

Their asylum system appears somewhat similar to ours.

No private accommodation, no permanent residence, right to deport based upon behaviour. Sweden offers a sizeable amount of money for voluntary repatriation - not sure how the British public would respond to that.

The newer policies proposed by Mahmood? Yes. Both Sweden and Denmark were inspired by the Danish immigration policies. Denmark took a strict stance even during the refugee crisis and were called racist for doing so. Now the other countries are following them.

As for the British public, people need to see the results. The number of people seeking asylum must go down drastically for people to grant victory to Labour on this issue. The next GE is still far away. So they have enough time to evaluate the success of these policies.

The moment of people seeking asylum is near impossible to control without drastic changes such as asylum centres at embassies abroad or a significant deal with EU nations (predominantly France) including holding centres like we used to have. We can’t realistically can’t stop small boats - we can reduce numbers of asylum granted - and we have, numbers are down considerably despite what Facebook warriors, The Men in Black and GN News want to tell you.

"

"

How will that reduce the numbers? It will only result in more people claiming asylum from those centres. And the ones who fail will still show up in boats.

"

"

European countries don't want them either. They are also trying to reduce the numbers. Why would they reach a deal with us?

"

We can, by leaving the conventions and just say we don't grant asylum to anyone showing up in boats.

"

- and we have, numbers are down considerably despite what Facebook warriors, The Men in Black and GN News want to tell you. "

The numbers are down than what they used to be but it's still high in most people's perspective.

I’ve engaged with your pie in the sky nonsense about leaving the ECHR and refugee convention before, not wasting another afternoon doing it

Not as nonsensical as the "let's build asylum centres in the other countries to reduce asylum seekers" idea

Leaving ECHR isn't pie in the sky nonsense either because two of the biggest parties in the country are supportive of the idea.

Yes, it will be very close, that is right, the politics changed back then, even further back in 2014 when fredrik reinfeldt who was the pm then did his famous speech about it.

'Racist leaning tropes', have coloured the environment there, so much so that the country feels very different from just a short while ago. Very sad as the Swedish are lovely

If you've not seen any changes, then you're not impervious to how it's been changed, I can only assume

I have seen changes in their immigration policies. I just don't understand how they are linked to racism.

Ha ha. Looks like the left will win though. But the close results means it would be difficult for them to push through legislation

Maybe they should’ve offered a brand new Volvo and tickets to ABBA Voyage as a sweetener.

The left love a freebie…
