Guardian reporting that switching the UK’s entire egg production to an organic free range model would lead to greenhouse gas emissions equivalent to 2,316,000 tonnes of CO2, while production through a fully caged system emits 1,184,000 tonnes

Separately the environmental animal welfare film

Gaslit says 95% of uk chicken production is from factory farms, birds force fed at 60 grams a day (15g in 1970’s) ready for slaughter at 5 weeks.

With chickens now being blamed for climate damage which method is best?

It's important that we understand the impacts of how our lifestyles affect the world.

I'm assuming that larger animals, used for food, have a much greater impact, perhaps kg of food? The chicken data is somewhat out of date, so much greater research is needed overall. I'd prefer animals to have a healthier lifestyle, than being reared with minimal exercise, etc. The poultry farms that have harmed our rivers, etc are a particular concern.

Thankfully, there are some controls but possibly we may have to adopt more.

It's astounding that the vast majority, 90% in your claim, of agricultural production, is for animals for human consumption . Presumably the majority of this is crops to feed animals? To then feed us.

Eat local in season vegetables and fruit.

A lot of imported fruit and greens come from European / eastern sources on Lorrys with engines running underneath the trailers to keep the trailer cold.

This is definitely not good for the environment.

Eat locally produced in season produce.😊😊

Eat less meat & eggs. Spend a couple months in Southeast Asia you quickly see the benefits of eating far less meat and dairy.

Do it for yourself, rather than the planet or future generations, they will still thank you.

And climate impact aside, around three quarters of the world’s agricultural land is devoted to livestock production, either as grazing land or to grow feed crops for animals raised for human food.

It follows that with human diets heavily reliant on animal proteins that more economically attractive businesses models (factory farms) are on the rise, at the cost of animal welfare.

It’s not as simple as just CO2 levels.

Free range chickens are part of the environment, and the ecosystem. They eat bugs and fertilise the ground.

Factory farms are food in, waste out, which often just gets dumped in rivers (the River Wye. In particular) plus the cruelty and over medication, which end up with things like the US system of chlorinated chicken, having to disinfect your food because of the conditions.

So maybe more co2 but the rest of the equation is probably worth it.

Research is from 2009-2010. What they are pretty much saying is to produce the same amount of eggs you need more organic chickens because they lay less eggs, so more co2. No mention of amount of co2 that would be added to the soil as a result of chickens being out in a field. No mention of the fact caged chickens lay more eggs because they use less energy moving around because they literally can't move at all. No mention of the chemicals used to produce the feed for those caged chickens.
