More than 65,000 people have been evacuated across France and Spain as wildfires burn in each country. Reported huge fire near Madrid impossible to contain. Many in lockdown.

• €2bn crops perished in Europe this summer

•. Net zero looking unachievable

The next 50 years could change civilisation

Should we continue on the net zero path or is nature going to win?

What is net zero going to do in the short term?

What does learning to "adapt" in the short term give us?

Change the crops we grow, change our outlook and adapt.

I'm convinced that the first question is not going to be answered with anything meaningful.

As for the second question, I think people are so hooked into the mantra of net zero that they cant think of anything other.

If we don't do something right now, a very large proportion of us are going to die.

But incredibly rich newspaper owners and fossil fuel companies tell thick people what to think, so I guess we've chosen the apocalypse instead.

Yay.

If we prepare for a disaster that never comes, we lose some money.

.

If we fail to prepare for a disaster that does come, we may lose lives, ecosystems, infrastructure and far more money than we would have spent preparing.

Within 24 hrs the evacuees are 220,000 and Spain's government has declared a national emergency, on top of those evacuated another 40,000 have been told to stay indoors.

Growing up in the 80’s the news showed third world famine and drinking water. Now it’s developed countries being impacted.

We are not prepared, long periods of drought is making farming difficult, if this continued and dry periods were four months duration, instead of two, an entire season of food production could be lost.

Time to start listening to climate scientists.

That's because Net Nero will have a cost to the people even 5% on fule and energy to help with NET ZERO is unaffordable to most.

Water companies have spent hundreds of millions building aquifers that are capable of storing vast amounts of water.

The issue is they then allow leaks to go unchecked or repaired.

Commercial waste.

Seems quite ironic we live on an island surrounded by water yet are in a drought

I'd be on board with net zero if it wasn't just another reason to skim people for money and was actually environmentally friendly.

Cars twice the size full of batteries and metals that are more harmful for the environment than anything previously used, not economical to run.

World leaders jetting around the world.

Look at the world cup how much did all those extra flights impact the environment?

Infantino flying to as many matches as possible when he could have stayed in one place watching on tv.....

The list goes on.

Net zero ,double standards.

"... is nature going to win?"

It always does. If the yearly rises in temperature are caused by the Earth's axial tilt or whatever, rather than greenhouse gas emissions, there ain't too much we can do about it. Remember, the last ice age during which most of Britain was uninhabitable ended only about 12,000 years ago.

But you and I will be long dead before our particular neck of the woods becomes an unliveable wasteland.

Can’t answer that

Either way tho plans need to be made.

On the water storage, AI says uk gets 280trn litres rainfall annually and domestic consumption 5.8trn litres (2%) so there is plenty excess capacity for storage

Agreed. Uk makes a 1% contribution to global emissions, although more with globalised food imports and manufacturing.

2bn more people and their consumption by 2070/80, most to be borne into emerging economies aspiring to western living standards.

Of course nature will win. When we have destroyed ourselves with wars and famines and the other excesses we desire. The planet will recover and change as it has done for millions of years.

The biggest polluting countries if they cut their carbon footprint by just a few percent would make a huge difference.

We are the only habited planet for billions of miles in every direction yet we seem determined to destroy it.

Maybe those distance planet's that seem uninhabitable were teeming with life once upon a time and a species similar to humans decimated them, leaving them void of life.

AI research:

Approximate EU/EFFIS burnt-area values illustrate why the most recent period feels like a marked escalation:

* 2020: Approximately 340,000 hectares burnt.

* 2021: Approximately 500,000 hectares burnt.

* 2022: Approximately 800,000–840,000 hectares burnt.

* 2023: Approximately 500,000 hectares burnt.

* 2024: Around 400,000 hectares burnt across Europe.

* 2025: 1,034,552 hectares burnt in the EU27 (the highest recorded total in the EFFIS record).

* 2026 (to 22 July): 254,388 hectares burnt in the EU27.

* Total burnt (2020–22 July 2026): Approximately 3.8–3.9 million hectares.

* Equivalent area: Around 38,300–38,700 km².

* UK comparison: Roughly 1.8 times the size of Wales.

Notes:

* The 2026 figure is incomplete and will increase before the end of the year.

* As of 22 July 2026, the area burnt was already above the 2006–2025 average for that point in the year, although it remained slightly below the equivalent point during the record-breaking 2025 season.

Water and food shortage is going to be a huge problem in the next 10-20 years with the increasing world population,

In Europe

Malta: 1.01 children per woman

Spain: 1.10 children per woman

Lithuania: 1.11 children per woman

Poland: 1.14 children per woman

Italy: 1.20 children per woman

Africa

Sadly I think you’re right. According to The Telegraph Europe is thought to have lost around 10 million tons of forecast grain production last month. In the UK we’ve endured the three worst harvests on record in the last six years, and England received only 3% of its typical rainfall in the first three weeks of July.

On the bright side, just think, in twenty years time we'll be looking back at this and thinking that we were lucky to have only lost 10 million tonnes of grain production in a year.

“Climate change is real, but Britain can do almost nothing about it. The war against global warming has been lost, with only grievous collateral damage to show for it”. Not a Guardian headline but a quote taken from Allister Heath’s column in The Telegraph 29th July. Granted he is attacking net zero and argues for it to be scrapped. But it’s clear now that members of the right’s, conservative rational thinking elements have woken up to the fact that we’ve lost the war against climate change and global warming is a thing and not made up or a hoax. Have we reached a point where we can begin to have a grown up, rational conversation about how we are going to handle this? Hopefully.

"But it’s clear now that members of the right’s, conservative rational thinking elements have woken up to the fact that we’ve lost the war against climate change and global warming is a thing and not made up or a hoax."

The rational types have always accepted that the climate is changing. Their questions were - how much is caused by humans, and what can we do about it.

"Have we reached a point where we can begin to have a grown up, rational conversation about how we are going to handle this?"

No.

There are still far too many people claiming that climate change is an emergency and that it will kill us all. While those people continue to shout that the sky is falling, we'll not be able to have sensible conversations.

On the bright side, people are starting to realise that Net Zero won't be the saviour that it has been sold as, and that we really need to drop it and get on with stuff that genuinely will work - like all the nuclear power advances that have been made recently.

Nevertheless any politician or political party that tries to claim that global warming is a hoax is no longer going to be taken seriously. Trump repeatedly said climate change was a hoax. Going so far as saying global warming was “created by and for the Chinese”to hurt US manufacturing. Trump’s delusional thinking was echoed by UK politicians and media outlets. At least now we can debate and discuss the topic without some interested parties yelling ‘hoax’. A small step forward maybe but still a step forward,
