He has done this before…. And that time he said he was stepping down from ukip

I think he is bolting it for the us and that why it stops any investigations

I am pretty sure that Reform will implode once he leaves. The ex-Tories they hired are known to fight with each other all the time. Big win for Kemi here as she managed to offload most of her problematic party members to Reform.

Restore Britain may try to grab the Reform votes. Whether they will be as successful is yet to be seen.

Of course, it's all assuming that Farage plans to resign.

Yep, pre emptive. He was going to get suspended, which would have resulted in the electorate triggering a by election. The optics of him triggering it will play more to his supporters than the investigation, suspension and triggering by the electorate.

I don't know, maybe this somehow gets around it. Or maybe he uses the campaign to stoke up more division and hatred. Scorched Earth campaign.

His chances are high at pulling off a win in a by-election, his haters are worth high % of influence on his voters.

They’re the same type of people who helped Trump, they can’t keep to facts and their emotional outbursts fuel his supporters determination to support him.

Anyway.. interesting development in the farage “they doorstepped my daughter “ claim

Sky News releases information on Nigel Farage's claim they "hounded" his daughter at home

- They approached a property linked to Farage off camera and knocked on the door as part of a broadcast pool operation. The person who answered was an adult who, they later established, was not Farage's daughter

- The journalists identified themselves, but the occupant chose not to engage

- After being informed by a passerby that Farage did not live at the address, they left the area and did not return

I'm not sure what the no shows will achieve, Farage will be elected.

Handing him a suspension of 14 days or over, brings us back to square 1 with even more ammunition handed to Farage that he will use to show how he is being bullied by the system and the costs of running another by-election will be front and centre.

Pulling a by election stunt, costing taxpayers about a quarter of a million to try and get ahead of a guilty verdict and a recall petition..

"I don't understand his thinking.

If he wins, what's to stop the commissioner coming back at him again?"

Nothing stops the commissioner re-starting the investigation.

But doing this gives him a weapon against the journalists. At the moment they all say "the public wants to know". If Farage gets about the same number of votes as he did last time he'll be able to say "It's a non-story. We've already had a by-election that showed that people don't care about this".

If the commission subsequently find that he did break the rules and should be sanctioned, to his supporters it'll look like Farage is being persecuted because he's popular.

From the viewpoint of someone on the left it might make it look like a stunt, but to Farage's supporters it looks like all the other parties are scared to face him.

From Farage's position it's a win-win. If he gets more votes than last time he'll be able to claim that his support has gone up. If he gets less he can say that his supporters stayed at home knowing that he'd win anyway.

The question has been answered, they were gifts that don't need declaring.

Now obviously you don't believe that, while other people do. None of us have any evidence for our positions, so the only logical thing to do is wait until the Commission renders it's conclusion.

I can see why you don't believe Farage's answers, but don't start claiming that no answer has been provided, because it definitely has.

I don't think that anyone is really disputing that these gifts were (very likely) legally, within the law.

What I find surprising is that you and others appear to believe that those 'gifts" are completely innocent and have no bearing or influence on Farage's actions or future policies.

You (and others) are fighting the semantics to make the point that they were legal - okay. We know that they likely were.

Do you really believe that there will not be quid pro quo?

You have highlighted the nuance in politics and opinion. Starmer took gifts, low level gifts but those gifts provided the supplier of those gifts a pass to No10.

That in my opinion is no different than Farage, but people we will justify their anger at Farage and lenience towards Starmer in monitory value.

The reality is Starmer gave the keys to N010 away for a pair of glasses and a tailored suit.

That is your view of this, I see it differently. He has taken the lead head on, and it will either work for him or not. There can be zero conclusion at this point on what the commission would have concluded, so we are left with a politician who is not following the rules, bowing down to media or political pressure.

That is the long and short of it, and what will happen next feels like it has fallen in Farage's favour. Could it have been different outcome, yes, but that requires the blood thirsty mob to wind it in and let process take its course, and not be driven by the media.

"I don't understand his thinking.

If he wins, what's to stop the commissioner coming back at him again?

Nothing stops the commissioner re-starting the investigation.

But doing this gives him a weapon against the journalists. At the moment they all say "the public wants to know". If Farage gets about the same number of votes as he did last time he'll be able to say "It's a non-story. We've already had a by-election that showed that people don't care about this".

If the commission subsequently find that he did break the rules and should be sanctioned, to his supporters it'll look like Farage is being persecuted because he's popular."

Mind games at its best.

Taking on the press is a dangerous game but yes, his supporters will be with him no matter what happens.

Labour original suggested they would, but are now suggesting they may not

Waiting on the Greens to decide what they will do

Labour decides not to take part…..

So just the greens now

What happens if no one runs against him in the attempted distraction, I mean by election?

He would just run unopposed in the by election… they will have had to spend all that taxpayers money on a stunt, by he doesn’t get his pre validation "

I'm not in favour of a by election for this sort of situation but if it's the money that's a problem then surely it was a problem in the by election that Burnham won as the previous MP just stepped down to make way for him.

"See.. that not answering anything about the 5 million and the 17 other cases.. that’s just proving the point regardless using Jedi mind tricks to deflect"

"The question has been answered, they were gifts that don't need declaring.

Now obviously you don't believe that, while other people do. None of us have any evidence for our positions, so the only logical thing to do is wait until the Commission renders it's conclusion.

I can see why you don't believe Farage's answers, but don't start claiming that no answer has been provided, because it definitely has."

"I don't think that anyone is really disputing that these gifts were (very likely) legally, within the law.

What I find surprising is that you and others appear to believe that those 'gifts" are completely innocent and have no bearing or influence on Farage's actions or future policies.

You (and others) are fighting the semantics to make the point that they were legal - okay. We know that they likely were.

Do you really believe that there will not be quid pro quo?"

I'm not sure what I've said that's misled you, but I'm not arguing that the gifts were legal. They were, and I don't see anyone saying otherwise. This is all about whether Farage broke parliamentary rules by not declaring things.

I can believe that a billionaire might give a friend £5m to help them out. If I had £1000 in my pocket and my friend said he was skint and couldn't afford lunch, I'd give him a fiver, which is the same scale of things. In fact I'd probably buy him lunch and a pint which will be a lot more than a fiver. So I think it might be possible that Farage is telling the truth.

Given that it might be true, I'm going to reserve judgement and wait for the Commission's report. If they say it was fine, I'll believe them. If they say it was clearly a bribe, I'll believe that. They have more knowledge and better information than I do.

So far in this thread (and the previous one) I haven't tried to argue that Farage is innocent. All I've done is pointed out where people are making stuff up, or twisting the truth to suit their own agenda.

If corruption can be proved, I'll condemn him just as loudly as anyone else. But until there's proof, I prefer to give people the benefit of the doubt.

The process of investigating was underway, the media and mob coverage added an element that Farage obviously felt wasn't going his way and he decided to take back some control.

The negativity and attacks on Farage will play right into his hands, just like it did for Trump.

Farage might have shot himself in the foot here. Last time he got just over 46% of the vote. If the Greens put up a candidate and everyone that hates Farage holds their nose and votes for the single opponent, he might just lose.

The problem for the Greens is that they don't have a stellar record of putting up acceptable candidates, whereas Farage is a known quantity.

He is trying to have the by election before the result of the investigation is known, because that would probably be worse

It's be nice if an MP put forward a Private Member's Bill to outlaw any form of "gifts" to MP's.

As long as gifts exist, there will always be accusations of corruption.

If I was an MP, I would certainly campaign on this issue.

I'd also campaign on making all MP's publicly publish their finances every year. And I'd set up a Probity Office to randomly vet MP's.

I want "squeaky clean" politics and MP's. Those that cannot abide by this are not fit to govern.

I think this is one of those ideas that sounds great as a sound bite but fails in the real world.

“Publish their finances” is one of those terms that holds all sorts of issues. If it simply means those finances related to public life then Farage will claim that his crypto donations don’t fall into that category. In fact that is exactly what he is claiming.

If it is all of a persons finances then I can’t see anyone remotely credible standing as an MP if all their banking details would be made public. No one is squeaky clean.

A rule I would like to see is if someone resigns as an MP during a parliament and causes a by election then they forfeit the ability to ever become an MP or go to the Lords again.

It only fails if people do not support it. Why would people not support it ? Because they are not prepared to hold themselves to a higher standard. They might mention privacy and other assorted impediments, but fundamentally it's about rigorous standards and holding yourself to them.

The general public as a general rule should demand more and expect more from those who govern us.

Probably not in this thread.. because this thread is about Nigel Farage! But feel free to start a different one!

Your posts here have been the worse nonsensical hijack attempt I have seen in a long time…it’s deflection overload

it not even Jedi mind tricks, it’s… oooh look over here… and there.. and there… and there… but don’t look here .. nothing to see here… ooh look over there again!

There is no way Farage tries to pull this if he doesn’t think the standards committee will get him.. and tried to claim victimhood for him for about daughter when she had no link with the property (which is now a massive own goal because we now know he owns 5 homes, which we didn’t before because we knew he had 2, and the other 3 had not been declared which he is supposed to do!)

The fact that his bank initially raised potential issues over the 5 million and alerted the police for potential money laundering kinda says it all!

We know he can use the members book of interests when it suits him, because even though he hasn’t turned up for the last 78 votes in the House of Commons, his outside earnings in the last year put him 2nd highest only below rishi Sunak, and rishi is so rich he actually gives it all away to charity!

The comparison here is Boris Johnson who tried to weasel out of a standards investigation by resigning his seat after the election, but instead they continued it and the result would have been a 90 day ban if he had continued being an mp!

And remember.. Farage was the one mocking Starmer for not declaring his sunglasses!

"Genuinely, I can’t wait to watch Farage up there on stage next to Count Binface, talking about how it’s him against the elite. It’s going to be absolutely hilarious, and he’s going to look ridiculous.

The other parties have played a blinder here, Farage wants to play the martyr, but he’s going to look like a clown.

Tactical voting could send a bigger message

I mean… technically… wouldn’t you have to give equal coverage! I mean… imagine the debate… please… someone.. anyone!! "

Not even Farage is narcissistic enough to do that, surely?

I read that Count Binface wants to discuss his policy on the price of Cadbury 99 flakes . Holding the price to 99 pence apparently. It will be interesting to see Farage debating with his opponents in the election he called .

Looks like a massive miscalculation by Farage here. He should have just let the investigations continue. It would be interesting to see its impact in his support. If he does lose support, the biggest winner here will probably be Rupert Lowe.

He has changed the narrative slightly but the core issue isnt going away till the ruling is published and whatever sanction he might get is revealed..

The questions dont go away and there are reform voters who dont like what they've been hearing about crypto, billion money and the convicted fella..

He will be asked and some may conclude for all his man of the people likes a pint etc front he's just like the very establishment he rails against..

"The fact that his bank initially raised potential issues over the 5 million and alerted the police for potential money laundering kinda says it all!"

Given that this is the same bank that unlawfully closed his account to avoid reputational damage, and then lied about it to the regulator, maybe their actions should be viewed with a little more suspicion.

Has Nige made a huge tactical error by resigning as an MP and forcing an unnecessary by-election in which he will stand? As things are at the moment he is set to spend the summer fighting for his political life against a man dressed as a bin. The internet today is breaking with p**s taking memes resulting in Nige being a bit of a national laughing stock. There might of course be some genius level political machinations at work within Reform on this but if they are I can’t see them. Thoughts welcome from pro or anti Reform peeps.

That seems very unlikely given that releasing an individual's financial information is in contradiction to several laws.

I see the home sec is trying to get rid of the paki grooming boss - only after outrage .

See Scotland and how the community got rid of scum rapist .

Country needs a reset bit like 1982 -

Wrong;

Labour, Conservatives, Liberal Dems and Greens are Cowards who are far too frightened to stand up against Nigel Farage.

This makes me embarrassed to call myself a Conservative, as my Conservative party are showing themselves as cowards.

But then the majority of political parties today are woke leftist cowards and that includes the Conservatives.

Farage is trying to take control of the narrative, the decision to not stand against him will send a number of messages.

His staunch supporters will associate it to a joint effort to close him down. Those that oppose him will see a joint effort to expose him.

The extremes of support are not what is interesting, it is the voters who are normally centre tory or labour voters who voted for Reform and Farage, they are now not going to be tested and they are the people who decide an election.

Until about three years back, there were people here saying they block the ones who vote for the Conservatives. Now it's Reform.

I promise you. You are better off being blocked by those people. I have been to some BDSM events where I have come across similar people whose entire personality is shaped around their politics and couldn't avoid bringing up Brexit or Trump into any discussion and tell us how they don't play with people on the other side of the political spectrum, like anyone cares. It's hard to have any kind of fun conversation around them because it usually means you have to strictly follow their moral code.

I also occasionally come across such characters in my normal life who sever friendships if someone dares vote for a party they don't like. Again, you don't really want to be friends with them in the first place

With all parties acting in unison to boycott the by-election, one of those messages will be that there really is a "uniparty", with all political parties being basically the same. It might not be true, but it'll certainly look that way to the sort of people that want to see a move away from "the establishment", and will think that Farage is the only way to achieve that.

Not wanting to have sex with someone because they are black is very different to not wanting to have sex with someone because their value systems are completely different.

Ooh… wonder where tice got that idea from

*checks notes * the guardian asked Farage for comment on the five million… asks for two days to respond… runs to the telegraph for his puff piece

Well… have to congratulate reform for running the same play! just a shame people cottoned on this time!

*checks notes* you mean the guardian asked Farage for comment on the extra owned houses… ran to the telegraph for his puff piece alleging the press doorstepped his daughter….

At this stage you wonder who is more gullible… the guardian for believing farage will get back to them for comment.. or the telegraph for taking his call and telling them he will give them an exclusive puff piece!

"I wouldn’t call not wanting to shag a Reform/Reatore type intolerance."

"What would you call it?

What would you call it if someone posted "There are quite a few black people on here. Please block us - if we haven't blocked you already"?"

"You appear to be equating race with life choices/values.

Not wanting to have sex with someone because they are black is very different to not wanting to have sex with someone because their value systems are completely different."

What would you call it if someone said "there are quite a few working class people on here, please don't contact us"?

You appear to be equating race with life choices/values.

Not wanting to have sex with someone because they are black is very different to not wanting to have sex with someone because their value systems are completely different.

Religion is also a choice. Will you be ok with someone saying that they will block anyone belonging to a religion?

I’m an atheist, I won’t be fucking any god botherers if I can help it, regardless of which sky wizard they worship.

It’s only ever right wingers who complain that people don’t want to fuck them because of their values, why do you think that is?"

So if someone has a profile saying, "We will not play with Muslims. Please block yourselves," you will be supportive of that and you won't call them an Islamophobe?

As for me, I personally don't care if someone doesn't want to fuck a right winger. I clarified my view in a post above. Such people who base their life choices around politics are truly miserable and don't vibe with me. So such self selection doesn't bother me the least.

I agree.

But we aren't talking about not wanting to have sex with someone, we're talking about someone coming into a thread purely to post that they don't like someone else.

If they had "no right wing people" in their profile, I'd support that. If that sort of thing is important to you, you should say so at the beginning. But actively looking for people that you don't like and then posting a message to say publicly that you don't like them is a different action.

It's almost like some people don't want to have sex with those that hold awful ideologies.

Weird concept to grasp, I know.

We all have the right to deny sex to people we don't like. But why come into a forum and announce it? They could have quietly blocked everyone that posted something that offended them and walked away. Why take the time to write a post telling everybody that they don't like certain people?

This is surely getting a little off topic

It's almost like some people are free to exercise their right to free speech in telling those with awful ideologies that they don't want to have sex with them.

They have the right to do so. It just comes across like some childish virtue signalling. No one gives a fuck about who you or anyone else for that matter blocks. And I have the freedom of speech to call out this silliness.

Getting back to Farage...

How on earth can the electoral system allow this rubber faced joker, or any other politician, to resign and then immediately stand again as a candidate in the by election he has just triggered?

Am I missing something?

"

Is it very different from a Govt "going to the country" by calling a general election early, in the hope of being re elected? Same thing surely at a local level.

Not taking any sides here, just my opinion.

Back in the days when politicians had honour, this is what was expected if an MP was accused of wrongdoing. They would resign to show good faith, and then offer themselves for re-election to see if the electorate still wanted them to continue.

Obviously it doesn't get used that way nowadays, but there's nothing wrong with a system allowing it.

Amazing that people who don’t like being blocked because of their values and behaviour never think to look at what it is about themselves that is causing people to find them so unattractive. It’s always ‘waaaah, waaaah, they are being horrible to us.’

This kind of comment is exactly why the country has become so divided.

the point being made is very few have offered support towards Farage or championed Reforms policies, however being factual is totally misunderstood and is seen as supporting Farage, such is the level of debate at times.

I don't see anyone going "waaaah". One person has made it clear that he doesn't care who blocks him. I certainly don't care if I'm blocked by those that put their emotions before their logic. No I've at all had complained about being blocked.

What I find amazing is that so many people are willing to publicly state that they've banned a bunch of people based on almost no evidence. Having read through this thread again I can't find anything to indicate that any of the respondents actually supports Farage. There's one guy that says "gets my vote", but he might be talking about a specific action rather than Farage in general. I never cease to be astonished when people are so willing to polarise everything, saying "if you're not actively joining me in condemning him, you must be his supporter and therefore my enemy".
