Labour leadership challenge by Monday

A Labour MP says if a cabinet minister does not put themselves forward to challenge Keir Starmer by Monday, she will attempt to trigger a leadership contest herself

Catherine West MP says she currently has 10 MPs who are prepared to back her and is "confident" enough MPs will come forward to trigger a contest

MPs are furious Labour have lost over 1400 (60%) of their council seats this week, under Starmer’s stewardship of the party.

What are the odds of this gaining traction ?

Labour has been a zombie government since Day One, and certainly since the October 2024 budget. Total fuck up.

I’m sure the other parties will be delighted if Starmer stays on. Everyone hates him. Complete electoral liability. Though to be fair I’m not sure anyone likely to replace him will do any better.

A zombie government? What do you base that on?

What’s your prescription for the country? Reform with its 19 policies?

I’ve seen dog turds with more charisma and leadership skills than Starmer.

Here and there

He backed no11, the beginning of the end for him on policy and strategy. However, there is of course a strange finger pointing exercise from the hard left, to explain why Farage is only in this position because of Starmer's inept leadership.

Mind boggling blinkers at work.

You said something about backing no 11 - I presume this relates to economic policy?

You appear to disagree with this government’s economic policy - so what is your policy?

nope, still not making much sense. You expect me to come up with a budget and economic policy because Rachel has failed to stimulate growth

No - I’m curious as to what you’d do differently. You can’t really criticise others unless you have a better plan, or it’s just empty posturing. Reform do that very well, by the way.

As much as I am critical of Starmer, I still want him to be the labour leader because whoever they choose to replace him, will be someone who is further left and lot worse.

I would have followed through with the plan they had for growth. It was clearly a knee jerk reaction (post Sue Grey) when they realised that they were in power but had no idea what to do but somehow they managed to come up with a plan that focused on removing the impediments to growth, freeing up pension money and pushing for deep infrastructure that was actually not bad.

The problem is that it stalled. And then, like everything this government does, they got pushed in some other direction and that was the end of that.

Starmer will survive it. He's like a turd that won't flush. As other have said, his replacement would be infinitely worse. Though that said, given Burnham and Rayner are non starters to my mind, I'd like to see some other Labour figures tossing their hat in the ring if he does go. Much as I dislike her, Emily Thornberry is experienced, not tainted by being in Starmer's cabinet and did a pretty good job of holding the government feet to the fire over Mandelson. I can't abide Streeting, a pretty vicious and nasty little man, as evidenced by his desire he tweeted out a few years back for a female journalist to be shoved under a train.

Really? I don’t see any of the large infrastructure projects and the active removal of planning constraints. At least I tried to praise some idea that this government and deliberately didn’t mention Rayners house building programme because I felt that would have definitely been a low shot. How is she doing with that by the way?

I would expect so as this week's elections were not for all councils and for several it was not even for all seats at a council. Whatever the total is now, it is 1496 less than it was Wednesday so probably just as well it was not all seats up for election

Well, she was forced out for doing something wrong apparently - Richard Tice did it but thats ok.

Have Labour abandoned those policies? Did I miss that announcement? Oh, it takes under 2 years to do everything I forgot.

Try looking at full fact’s government tracker

Interesting to see how developments in Tameside progress. There are allegations from a senior CLP figure that conversations were had in Rayner's kitchen around the conduct that has led to 5 people being arrested. Hard to see how Rayner can distance herself from this if charges are laid against those arrested.
