Can you fly the flag on st georges day?

Jump to newest

From the land of haribos.

Are you also following the latest about it, if you are allowed or not to fly the flag on st georges day? Apparently you could get a fine up to £2500 for flying flags outside your home on that day, there seem to be some flag rules about it, like displaying it incorrectly.

So what is the correct way? They say that what is allowed is only one flag on vertical flag pole attached to the roof of a building and if the flagpole is attached to the side of the building, the flag must not be larger than 2 square meter in size, not just that, but those living in a controlled area concent may also be needed.

What is your view about it and the rules about how to fly a flag?

Whilst it is good to have some rules. I think that during celebrations like this, they could change it, so people could fly it wherever, within reason of course too

According to local council planning laws, only one flag on a vertical flagpole attached to the roof of a building is allowed.

If the flagpole is attached to the side of the building, the flag must not be larger than 2 square meters in size.

Refusing to obey council requests to remove an oversized flag could lead to households being reported and fined.

This means for those wanting to display a larger banner, they will need to fly it directly from their roof

Consent may also be needed for those living in a controlled area, such as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

Fines can start as low as £100 to £250, with a maximum penalty of £2,500 for repeated offences.

Surely the question as an outsider is do you feel the flag is valued and not tainted by far right fascists who have abused it. Because for me it's a symbol of hate the way the confederate flag is. But that's as someone not English. If comfortable, then fly a little flag and enjoy the day. Don't push the rules and get up to whatever traditions you do on the day. And don't forget to moan it's not a bank holiday lol. Alot of rules I feel are built on the intimidation flags can give off.

That’s how I feel about Wales. I used to go regularly a few times a year but nowadays it just feels like a hostile environment for English people, so I don’t go, and spend my money elsewhere.

I've flown the Sg George flag outside my home for 20yrs now. As long as it's not damaged or faded there should be no issues.

It would need to be a good argument for me to take it down.

To me if there is a sense that the flag is tainted by far right or other groups then the more non far right people that fly it the better to reclaim it.

I wonder if it's just an English thing that are frightened of upsetting non English people.

The councils basically do fuck all when some idiot blasts loud music late at night and disrupts everyone's lives. But this... they want to control.

Someone has got their priorities completely fucked up.

Both. It's well known that the Pro-palestine crowd has an anti semitism problem and are intimidating towards the Jews, like these lovely bunch of humans:

"attached with Anti-semitism 🤷‍♂️"

The Palestine flag is antisemitic and anti-Christian by design – tolerance of Jews and Christians as dhimmi, but not with any power.

The colours are those of Pan-Arabism, the ideology of a continuous Arabic Caliphate to extend across the entire Levant.

The colours represent the major caliphates and the Hashemites:

Black: Represents the Abbasid Caliphate or the Rashidun Caliphs.

White: Symbolises the Umayyad Caliphate.

Green: Represents the Fatimid Caliphate or the Prophet Muhammad's family.

Red Triangle: Represents the Hashemite dynasty.

The design as it currently stands was popularised by the PLO, who's initial aim was to destroy the state of Israel.

It represents a drive for a single Arab-ruled region, with no room for the self-determination of any other ethnicity or religious belief.

The perception of it not being antisemitic that is incorrect.

I notice that the potential rules above are still for quite a big flag (2 metres).

The thing I find strange, is that left-wingers claim that the flag has been hijacked by the right (I think that's a fair claim), but they don't try to reclaim it at all, and you never see it flown at left wing protest marches etc. 🤔

These will be local rules for one specific council, not generally applicable across England. And the council can't stop you from flying a flag for one day. You can do pretty much anything you like as long as it isn't a permanent or regular thing, and as long as it doesn't cause harm to others.

"Are you also following the latest about it, if you are allowed or not to fly the flag on st georges day?

"

You've been reading too much propaganda bullshit

You can fly the English flag on you're own property without permission, the flag pole can be up to 4.6m and the flag up to 2m²

I doubt anyone will be round with a tape measure and if they do be sure to ask for your day in court

🤣🤣🤣. House in the next street has a St George flag which literally covers the entire house. All the windows and the top half of the front door covered. It goes up on various key days and stays up for a couple of weeks after. He has been doing this for years. Council don't really care (nor should they).

I’ve been to plenty of foreign countries and have never felt threatened by them flying their national flag. It’s nice to see. I don’t take it as a sign that I should leave their country. Good for them for being proud of it.

Given that these people have (allegedly) fled for their lives from war zones I wouldn’t have thought a bit of flag waving would concern them, compared to the horrors they have been through.

I doubt whether they even have the first clue what the flag is.

Pretty sure they would. Despite your depiction of them they are educated.

Having pogroms and people burnt in buildings during the Farage riots and a hoard of gammons carrying the flag at you will tarnish it's value.

St George’s flags were fine back when the most likely place you were to see one was on a country village church tower.

However, we all know that now they have been adopted by all sorts of riff raff from football hooligans to nasty pieces of work on the political scene.

That is where the current conflict over their usage lies.

My stance is that if you fly it on St George's Day to celebrate the occasion as a nod to tradition, then well and good but if you use the flag or the celebration of the day to cause dissent, you deserve to have the law having a serious word with you.

The rules are all written down and tested in court. You can put up whatever you like as long as it isn't in position for more than 28 days in any one year, isn't over 50ft high, and doesn't extend beyond your own property boundaries.

I was only taking about displaying a flag on your own property. Obviously flags tied to lamp posts in the street are against the rules unless they are put there by the council.

Absolutely not! I have no affinity to a piece of clock or another 24 hours labelled at George's day or at David's day.

These are merely concepts. To rally the troops into tribes and hate other humans who happen to be born inside a different border on another part of this rock, continent or world.

What if you're Muslim and English?

Also, the call to prayer requires special permission from the locals and an application to the council. Hearing it across entire towns is unlikely.

The nation needs to take pride in the England flag, unfortunately it's been hijacked by certain groups who are more anti-immigration than pro England. There's a difference between loving our country and hating other people who also live in our country. The real enemy are the rich and powerful.

Consistently bad decisions over decades (so it's not just one government or party) and money mismanagement to name two. There are more reasons but it's too long to go into. There is more that unites us than divides us.
