Israel/Lebanon peace talks

Two interesting things are happening at the moment. Firstly, Israel and Lebanon are holding direct talks, for the first time in 43 years, in the US. That in and of itself is quite encouraging.

Secondly, and most interestingly, Lebanese officials have been openly calling for Hezbollah to disarm, disband and just go away. For decades, Hezbollah has been not just a major party in Lebanese politics; it was the best armed and logistically mature factor, being fully supported by Iran. They acted as the bully, ignoring the other factions with impunity, pretty much like a mafia.

While there will be inevitable criticism of the circumstances of these negotiations , it appears (to the Lebanese people we've spoken to recently) that this is a very positive step, only made possible by the degradation of Hezbollah and Iran.

When people talk about dialogue, this is exactly the kind of dialogue that potentially leads to lasting peace and cordial relations. Two parties who *might* actually want to get along. As opposed to parties who want to eradicate each other.

Hezbollah is exceptionally upset about the talks.

The secretary general of Hezbollah, Naim Qassem:

They're finally getting the memo that Lebanon doesn't want them, and that they have finally lost their ability to force Lebanon into submission.

Its been coming for years..

Lebanon need support to hopefully remove the cancer within..

The issue isn’t Israel and another country trying to be cordial through negotiation and compromise. The real problem is the bad actors, namely Iran who oppose Israel and will target any country willing to enter talks.

Saudi and Oct 7 are a good example of that.

Sure, that's why Israel has a mow the grass policy. Bomb neighbours every few months to keep them at bay. Only we're now 30 years in of netenyahu and his bombing cycle and Israel and it's people are not safer.

It's time for jaw jaw not war war. I wish the Lebanese and Israelis the best to negotiate a lasting peace deal. However, netenyahu needs reasons not to go to prison
