Angry and Dispondant

After a Military career I'm now a sole trader and MD of my own company. I've always had at least one job from age 14 and never claimed a benefit all my life. But now it's like wading through treacle, everywhere I turn there's just more bureauocracy, tax and bullshit. It's getting impossible to earn a living unless you are on benefits. I seem to be constantly angry and literally every day I hear of more drains on my time and money which makes me feel worse. I'm sure I can't be the only one. I don't see it getting better in the future. Please, someone, tell me I've got it wrong.

It is tough working for yourself and the tax system is so unfriendly in this country and costly to manage!

How long have you been in business?

As a company 8 years, started just before COVID started, wasn't the best timing, as a sideline to primary job 30 years.

Congratulations on the 8 years! That in itself is an achievement many don't manage.

"It's getting impossible to earn a living unless you are on benefits"

I would disagree, people on benefits will be on the same amount forever, no chance of owning a property etc. (Under must circumstances)

The good thing about owning a business / or working for one with opportunities is progression.

Maybe stop reading social media / newspapers if you find yourself getting angry and concentrate on progression.

Otherwise, just sell everything and spend all your money until you have under 6k and do the same

I'd love to tell you that you're wrong, and point out what you need to do to make things better.

But sadly, you're right.

Politicians are bureaucrats and adding bureaucratic processes benefits themselves. Every time there is a perceived problem, their solution is always to slap some bureaucracy around it without evaluating the cost and benefits. Then they tell the people that they are fighting those "evil corporates" when in reality, the big corporations can easily pay for these bureaucratic processes while the small businesses suffer the most.

And then people wonder why big monopolies exist.

Self employed here, but yes I’d agree.

Business is doing well for me too, and thanks to Trump it's getting even better. But the amount of paperwork and fees and tax increases means that I'm spending more time on admin, and seeing less money at the end of it all.

I don't have a problem with that, do it with the LTD company anyway, that's just progression and modification of the system. It's the pointless legislation etc to meet a political ideal, or more to the point a "sound bite" without any thought or consideration for short or long term effect.

This is my whole point, it's as if you are being punished for trying to make a success of yourself.

Only advice I can give is don't read the news or social media.

When you work around the clock to survive and pay bills honestly, then watch tv and see either the super rich acting immorally and avoiding tax, or scumbag thieves doing what they like; that will depress you.

Head down, know you are a good person and can sleep at night with your conscience. Look after you (and your family), nothing else matters.

UK has always been brutal for small businesses. VAT fucks you, business rates fuck you, corporation tax fucks you, filing and compliance fucks you, import duty fucks you. If everyone seems to make money out of your business except you, then that's pretty normal.

Just to clarify a point. A few people said "don't read social media, etc". I rarely do and I pretty much take everything on there with a pinch of salt. I'm not talking about opinions and blogs. I'm talking about changes to laws, tax, legislation etc from official sources (Gov.uk, HMRC etc) and thinking about the future from this data and my own observations.

Better off leaving this shithole nation in a better EU place if you are able to . Better tax breaks / society in many places etc there is a reason why so many millionaires / business owners are jumping off this wreck. 6 of my wealthy family / friends already moved / process moving stuff out of here. With labour wrecking it up and the odds of them imbeciles reform making a bigger mess in a few years if they win it’s gonna be grim times for sure for at least a decade

Life is tough at times and feels unfair. I was angry at the world for the last few weeks then I caught a clip of stand up 2 cancer bake off. Money troubles and unfairness is absolutely nothing compared to what I saw on there.

I have absolutely nothing to cry about, just get on with my life the best I can and wish I never have to experience what those families have to go through.

Just before covid the government were saying it's the best time to start a business, I said no it's not.

When you hear any government say that don't believe them.

The fact is there isn't or ever will be a good time.

It's a gamble you're more likely to profit on the 3.20 at Kempton.

I bet it's harder to get business insurance ie loss due to finacial difficulties cover more than ever. Or the premiums are stupendous.

I wouldn't advise anyone to start a business not even an Internet type social media one.

3 yrs tops then it's downhill.
