One should care about oppressive laws, of course, but should those laws be ignored if you don’t agree with them? Personally on your example I wouldn’t visit a nation who has oppressive rules against LGBTQ+ people (as a straight man), and I’d urge others to do the same. Not sure what power I have to change them…

One should care about oppressive laws, of course, but should those laws be ignored if you don’t agree with them? " I never said they should be ignored. But you can still have an opinion on whether the law is good or bad, which was the opinion I asked for. " Personally on your example I wouldn’t visit a nation who has oppressive rules against LGBTQ+ people (as a straight man), and I’d urge others to do the same. Not sure what power I have to change them… " That's a fair take. You and I don't have the power to change their laws. But you can still criticise the laws. Morality is relative. But you can still talk about your opinion of other people's morality.

But how much we can influence these laws shouldn't stop us from having an opinion about the law itself.

I think Rupert Lowe’s immigration booklet is akin to the stasi. I could do a good job of convincing people such, but his support would still deny it as opinion, right?

It's more nuanced than that. There's the basic premise of "my enemy's enemy" - the same as the bizarre pairing between "Queers for Palestine" and supporters of Hamas. They aren't actually compatible, but they both hate the white Western hegemony, oppression of the marginalised, etc. The same can be seen with Iran - how could Jeremy Corbyn, a human rights campaigner, stand on so many Iranian (and pro-Hamas) platforms? If they stepped back and considered whether they would back 90% of their policies were they instituted by white men in Britain, then no. They don't actually like what the Iranian regime stands for... But that is overshadowed by the imperative to stand with the oppressed against the common enemy: white, western capitalism. This spills over into general society - many tribal leftists, and even more tribal "woke" will attack anything against their "enemy", be that Trump, the White West, Israel, Jews, capitalism, British tribal fascism, whatever. There is then a blind spot in these people for those pesky human rights issues, which are subordinate to the overarching hatred. This is usually dismissed as "of course I don't agree, but that's not within our control", etc. But don't confuse ignoring the inconvenient obvious in deference to a shared hatred, and actual support of the regime. Incidentally, there were a couple of Islamists on this forum over the past couple of years, banging on about the decadent West, with all the misogyny and anti-gay rhetoric you'd expect. They've either gone away or been banned. But they've been incredibly entertaining and an educational look into the mind of some of these deranged people over in the Middle East (and here in the UK).
