"The Greatest Ever Briton Sir Winston Churchill, and other British icons like Alan Turing, Jane Austen and David Beckham are being removed from banknotes to replaced by images of harmless wildlife such as sparrows and squirrels. Is there no end to this woke madness, or do you fancy a beaver with your tenner ?" When has David Beckham ever appeared on an official UK bank note?

" Your choice would be Saville wouldn't it On what basis would you make a statement like that? Your Arafat nonsense outs you as deeply on the right. " By "you", you mean another poster, right? And... Anti-Arafat/PLO="Deeply on the Right"=supports Jimmy Saville=celebrates a sex pest/r@pist inclusive of young victims (a nonce)? How very interesting. You, on the other hand, presumably identify left or centre-left. Do you feel that other people of your political leaning would also make these connections - could we generalise there, too?

"How long before some people really find reasons to be offended about these animal pictures? I have seen people in the IT companies I worked for complain about using the the word "warroom" because it's traumatic for people coming from war torn countries and "lockdown"(when talking about code lockdown) because it's traumatic for people who were affected badly by COVID. At this point, nothing surprises me anymore man Remember the Californian incident where there were complaints about a master/sl@ve drive, over twenty years ago? https://edition.cnn.com/2003/TECH/ptech/11/26/master.term.reut/

At this point, nothing surprises me anymore man I remember that. Lots of corporations and even open source mysql projects ended up migrating from using master/sl@ve terminology to leader/follower or whatever new terms they cooked up. Trump's win put an end to that circus for now.

"Why does everyone trying to provoke outrage on this subject fail to include the full brief from the Bank Of England? “Images of the UK’s wildlife are to feature on the next series of banknotes following a public consultation run by the Bank of England.” There was a public consultation- that’s not woke madness. " Because some people just have to be perpetually angry at something.

That public consultation saw input from only 44,000 people, and the BoE are known for having 'consultations' that happen to confirm their existing plans. Just look at the press releases they have put out saying that choosing wildlife will allow them to include anti-counterfeiting measures that are essential to making the currency safer. I'm disappointed that notable people will be dropped. I think bank notes should have something that the country can be proud of, whether that's British people, or inventions, or discoveries, or even art. We can't be proud of wildlife, it grew here all on its own and has nothing to do with being British.

"We can't be proud of wildlife, it grew here all on its own and has nothing to do with being British." Why would one be proud of someone who was born and died years, decades or perhaps even centuries ago, but by sheer coincidence they happened to be born on the same bit of land as us?

Yes, proud was the wrong way to look at it. I should have used the phrase that the BoE did - "symbolises the UK". Whether you like Churchill or not, he's definitely recognisable world-wide as representing the UK. We don't have any native animals that are unique to the UK, nor do we have any that represent the UK (unless we include lions and unicorns and dragons). It'll be interesting to see which animals they come up with for the next consultation.

The UK has plenty of well known people, some of whome had a big impact on the world so I say stick with them

"Out of interest if the UK does not have any animals that are unique to it and the BoE wanted something that symbolises the UK then how did the choose beavers?" They didn't. They've not chosen the animals yet, but the British press can't resist a good double entendre, and headlines of "bank notes will soon feature pictures of beavers" makes them giggle.
