£160 billion

The greens manifesto pledged to increase public spending by £160 billion.

A 1% increase in the basic rate of income tax raises around £8 billion.

As their biggest pledge is to be fair and inclusive, I assume they will want to include everyone when they raise this in taxes, that’s the fairest way.

So hands up who wants a 20% increase in the basic rate of income tax? No?

Alternatively they could just get it from the higher earners. A 1% increase in the higher rate of tax raises roughly £1.5 billion so they could just put that up to 106%

Alternatively a 1% increase in the top rate of tax raises roughly £200 million. So they could just increase that to 800%

The problem is of course you can’t actually get more than 100%.

So let’s tax the rich, that’s the motto right?……

30% increase in the top rate taking it to 75% raises £6 billion

A 10% increase in the higher rate to 50% raises £15 billion.

That still leaves them £139 billion short. So the basic rate would have to go up by 18%

Are we all onboard?

So even if you hammer the rich, you can’t get anywhere near to the money they wanna burn. And many millionaires will stand for 75% tax?

We lost £580 billion out of the economy due to brexshit. Do things right and get the economy mbing, plenty to roll in in tax. But you scaremongering while we all rot with house out of reach of do many. New ideas are needed, capital investment increases tax returns after all. Race to the bottom had left us like this,

So you’re happy with a 20% basic rate of tax? No matter what a governments spending policy is, you have to get the money before you can spend it.

And if you want to add more capital investment to their plans then you need more money, not less

Where did we lose 580bn ? Is that from the Rachel Reeves school of accountancy?

I just counted and we gained £580 billion since Brexit.

Happy for anyone to check my maths

0+580,000,000,000 =5.8×10¹¹

Whereas actual economists suggest that brexit has cost us somewhere between 180 and 240bn.

Of course, the options on figures rely on modelling. Some estimates may be high, some low and some will show no actual loss at all over the next 30 years.

It's a partisan concept. Brexiteers will opt for the least costly and remainers, the most costly.

What these figures will not show is the costs that EU membership would be if we rejoin with the compulsion to take the Euro and without our previous rebates.

Let’s not forget removing the nuclear deterrent and then asking putin nicely to do the same. How anyone can take this party seriously in the face of reality it’s quite worrying.

Banking on reform getting 50-60% of the May by election seats.

If they don’t we’re fucked with Labour and Green

I've not seen this pledge to increase spending by 160 Billion but presumably you have. Did they explain exactly how they will raise this money by any chance

And people act like it was a monstrous one sided affair - ‘we voted to leave’

Well, the swing to remain was 700k votes. Around 1% of the population.

Just Google it mate.

And no they didn’t say where they will get the money from. Maybe the magic money tree? Maybe they will sell our nukes to Iran? Or North Korea? Don't think that would raise £160 billion tho.

Basic rate tax going up to 38% absolute minimum.

So googled it and what I found says it's actually 170 billion extra they plan to raise and spend 160 billion. As for how to raise that amount the old favourite of increasing tax on higher tax payers, increase in NI, increase in business taxes etc etc, and changing tax relief on pensions . A big chunk is proposed to come from a carbon tax on business. Basically anyone who is even mildly successful and/or creates jobs or saving for the future is to be penalised. The IFS is not so positive about the plans saying they won't raise the amounts claimed. They also point out that the carbon tax which is designed to change habits will be a victim of it's own success. Basically if companies change to comply then the revenue raised will be severely cut.

Like all fringe parties hoping to make inroads, they can throw figures around freely.

Name one party who doesn’t do it?

This is true and also applicable to the main opposition party of both colours. They also rightly come under more and more scrutiny as they become more successful. The scrutiny often shows problems in their plans like in this case
