"No idea what the truth is. But I’d guess if he was alive he’d be on tv proving Trump is lying. The wider question is what do we as a society about a regime that executes women for not wearing the right clothing and murders anyone who disagrees. Sanctions have clearly not worked, they have been in place for decades… You’re on a train and see a man with a knife threatening to cut a woman’s throat if she doesn’t suck him off. You wanna help but you’re scared he will use the knife on you. You notice the man sat next to you has a gun. So you can… 1. Do nothing 2. Try to talk the attacker out of it 3. Ask the man with the gun to help You go for option three as that seems the highest probability of success. The trouble is, the man with the knife has tens of thousands of friends that he’s sent to live in neighbourhoods very close to everyone on the train. All over the western world. Those friends are gonna be very angry if anyone interferes as they believe the knife man is well within his god given rights to demand anything he likes from the woman, even the right to kill her if she disobeys him. So what now? You and the gunman could save the woman but open up a can of worms. You’ve no idea who or where these terrorists cells are, but you know they will kill thousands of innocent people given the opportunity. (As a side note, do they have to share the 73 virgins? Surely there can’t be enough to go around?) With the benefit of hindsight, was Britain right to declare war on Germany in 1939 after they invaded Poland? If Germany had nukes, would we have taken the same stance, because we haven’t with Russia over Ukraine. And the regime in power in Iran has a massive following. Many believe in what the government over there are doing. Taking them out is not as simple as taking out their leader, or the whole government, or even the IRG. Taking risks or making sacrifices . It’s about cost, not necessarily death itself. . The problem however is the stance is double-sided. . Inspiring side: Encourages integrity and courage Reminds people not to live purely for comfort or convenience Often associated with moral courage (e.g., civil rights activists) . Dangerous side: . Taken literally, it can justify fanaticism or extremism . People can become unwilling to question beliefs, even wrong ones . It can discourage healthy doubt and growth . The same mindset that produces heroes can also produce extremists—the difference is whether the belief is grounded in empathy, truth, and openness to revision. . Modern philosophy would reframe the quote to being "“If you believe in something deeply, you should be willing to sacrifice comfort, safety, or advantage for it—but also remain humble enough to question yourself.” .
