Sir Jim Ratcliffe

As if running Man Utd didn't bring enough problems, self made billionaire Sir Jim had waded into politics with some highly controversial remarks.

Should he apologise, as our unpopular PM has said ?

Ratcliffe of course is a private citizen who has said nothing illegal. Not sure it is appropriate for Starmer to tell him what he can and can't say.

Starmer likes to tell everyone what they can and can’t say. His starmtroopers don’t really do much else these days except arrest people for what they say.

He should not apologise, it is the people who try and shut down legitimate debate who should apologise- however there is little chance of that.

Calling something offensive and / or racist is the first reaction of those who seek to stifle other people’s points of view.

Nine million people - as I understand it - do not live entirely on benefits.

A large slice of the nine million people work full time for instance but because they are paid so poorly they are entitled to claim Universal Credit. Their sometimes billionaire employers know that they can get away with paying shit wages because they know the government will top their wages.

A bit ironic that Ratcliffe is one of those employers.

A large slice are genuinely too sick to work so the government pays SSP as the employer will not pay sick leave.

Pension credits? Should we include them?

As for the UK being colonised by immigrants, what about United’s playing staff?

Lammens, Martinez, Yoro, Dalot, Mbeumo, Cunha etc.

The above are taking jobs from British footballers, and access to housing in Wilmslow/Hale too etc. De Ligt is clogging up a bed at hospital at the moment with his injury, probably denying Betty from Altrincham a much needed hip replacement after fighting in WW2.

Correct.

Add £25bn housing benefit because the state sold off half our social housing at a discount

Our industry and farming globalised

25% of the nhs budget treating alcoholism, obesity, smoking and drug abuse - the majority of that cost not attributed to migrants.

He's a private citizen who has made an inflammatory public statement full of inaccuracies on a topic that is very much in the public consciousness. There's a difference between an owner of a UK business and a prominent figure using a platform to say this, and someone down the pub saying it.

The way people talk about immigrants and immigration in the UK is really quite disgusting. Saying that the UK (one of the great colonisers) has been colonised by immigrants filters filters down to schools, workplaces etc.

Why do certain people think that anyone who doesn’t agree with them shouldn’t be allowed an opinion?

Why are only certain opinions ok?

Why do people who are not extreme radical lefties have to apologise and extreme lefties don’t?

I don’t get it. What’s wrong with these people? Why do you want to abolish free speech?

Can the guy not live wherever he wants? Does he have to live where you tell him to?

All I ever seem to see from the left is the desire to impact everyone elses freedom while screaming from the rooftops about the right to use whatever toilet you see fit.

Chants to murder the entire population of Isreal and every Jew on the planet are fine. That’s perfectly reasonable.

But saying some people from other countries have come over here and wow, you fucking racist Nazi.

I put it to the forum that the people who want to kill all the Jews fit the criteria of Nazi a little better than the comments Jim made.

But because I’m not a leftie I should probably apologise

Why do certain people think that anyone who doesn’t agree with them shouldn’t be allowed an opinion?

Nobody is saying this.

Why are only certain opinions ok?

Why do people who are not extreme radical lefties have to apologise and extreme lefties don’t?

What opinion has a radical leftie come out with recently that you would find comparable? And are you saying they should apologise or not?

I don’t get it. What’s wrong with these people? Why do you want to abolish free speech?

Free speech doesn't mean you can say whatever you want without consequences.

Can the guy not live wherever he wants? Does he have to live where you tell him to?

He can live wherever he wants. But if you're going to complain about immigrants draining the country, you are going to sound hypocritical when you yourself are an immigrant who moved out of the country to avoid paying taxes, and who has happily taken government subsidies

All I ever seem to see from the left is the desire to impact everyone elses freedom while screaming from the rooftops about the right to use whatever toilet you see fit.

Genuine question, has this ever happened to you in real life or are you just talking about the internet?

Chants to murder the entire population of Isreal and every Jew on the planet are fine. That’s perfectly reasonable.

It's not absolutely fine is it? Where has this happened?

But saying some people from other countries have come over here and wow, you fucking racist Nazi.

"

It happens on the street of most major cities nearly every weekend.

Saying someone should apologise for their opinion when you don’t agree with them is exactly what’s being said. If they agreed they wouldn’t be saying he should apologise would they.

I gave an example of what the radical left say. But let me be clear…

“from the river to the sea”

“Gaza Gaza make us proud, put the zio’s in the ground”

I don’t see these racists being asked to apologise or even called racist, which they clearly are. Certain forms of racism are actively encouraged by left wing ideology. It’s ingrained in their ideology. They are protected by the police and anyone who even tries to film their racism who’s not part of the demonstration is usually attended to prevent a brew h if the peace. Does anyone on the march get arrested for causing a breach of the peach which is exactly what they are doing? No, they are guarded and made headline news by the bbc.

You saying it’s only in my head when there’s hundreds of posts on social media about it is just childish. Are the posts in my head as well?

That's not true though is it ? Britain has experienced minimal immigration for most of its history. There is certainly no precedent for the scale and type of migration experienced this century. It has been transformational for much of the country.

"I am sorry that my choice of language has offended some people in the UK and Europe and caused concern but it is important to raise the issue of controlled and well-managed immigration that supports economic growth.

"My comments were made while answering questions about UK policy at the European Industry Summit in Antwerp, where I was discussing the importance of economic growth, jobs, skills and manufacturing in the UK.

"My intention was to stress that governments must manage migration alongside investment in skills, industry and jobs so that long-term prosperity is shared by everyone. It is critical that we maintain an open debate on the challenges facing the UK."

This is the other half of the story media and Starmer are ignoring

Interesting how few people have engaged with Ratcliffe's arguments, perhaps because they are obviously correct regardless of his unwise language.

Britain like other European countries has added millions of people who will never make a positive economy contribution while holding cultural beliefs that are totally at odds with the centuries old traditions of those countries.

It's clear this issue will dominate politics for a long time to come.

"Labour have attacked pensioners, farmers, workers and savers to pay for their swelling welfare, weak economy and national debt costs.

This is the other half of the story media and Starmer are ignoring

34 million people working can’t support 9 million on (in work) benefits, 12 million retirees, 750,000 youth unemployed, and whatever the numbers are for economically inactive

Did all of them only become so under Labour?

Was the country whistling happy tunes and the books balanced under the Tories?

So the old immigrants don't like the new immigrants. Meh. Hardly newsworthy.

That's not true though is it ? Britain has experienced minimal immigration for most of its history. There is certainly no precedent for the scale and type of migration experienced this century. It has been transformational for much of the country."

"Interesting how few people have engaged with Ratcliffe's arguments, perhaps because they are obviously correct regardless of his unwise language.

Britain like other European countries has added millions of people who will never make a positive economy contribution while holding cultural beliefs that are totally at odds with the centuries old traditions of those countries.

It's clear this issue will dominate politics for a long time to come."

Think I read earlier that Starmer said Radcliffe should apologise but also said we need an open discussion on the subject. Hopefully it will not result in people being labelled racist for voicing concerns and showing disgust when asylum seekers harm those that they were asking help from

This is true, but nothing on the scale and pace of modern migration, nor involving modern states with extensive welfare provision and free public health and education systems. No one rocked up in the Flinstones and got a free council house.

I believe pointing out Labour failings is a hate crime punishable by prison time. I think they are discussing making voting for a party other than Labour a hate crime and disallowing those votes as “not in the public interest”. That’s assuming elections themselves aren’t banned for not being in the public interest.

Starmer believes “Any time spent talking about elections instead of breakfast clubs is racist and far right. We’ve had an election and everyone voted for me, I see no need for further elections until lord ali says so”

Ohhh the Envy is showing.

He has a self made fortune and keeps many in employment so hats off to the man

Regarding immigration I would like to see any immigrants with less than 15 years living in the UK removed or given 6 monthly visas requiring renewal every 6 months proving full information.

Manchester, Birmingham and London are totally polluted by immigration and up here in Scotland Glasgow is becoming similar.

Get them all sent back to their country of origin.

Jesus, what a horrible attitude. Actually just makes me sad.

What about people's husband's and wives who are immigrants, kids etc. Doctors, nurses, teachers all paying tax, contributing to current pensioners pensions, giving to society - youd want them to have 6 months max security knowing that at any point they'd have to uproot and 'go home'?

For clarification, Ratcliffe was one of the UKs biggest personal tax payers for decades before moving to Monaco aged 70. His companies based in the UK still pay tax there of course.

I doubt if there are many 70 year olds in the UK who make a net positive tax contribution.

There is now a lot of official information showing that low skill, non European migrants are an overall net cost rather than contribution to the tax system. Studies from Denmark and Holland show in many cases this cost extends or even increases for later generations.

Ratcliffe's argument was primarily an economic one and the facts clearly support the argument for more controlled immigration based on economic and cultural benefits.

He may have felt it was an economic argument, but he was very economical with the facts. He also used inflammatory language from the play book of the far right, which transposed his argument into a slur.

How many people does his companies employ in the UK who are immigrants on the minimum wage, perhaps even being in receipt of benefits because their economic status means they qualify for it? Rather than complain about immigration, wouldn’t it be better if he paid his immigrant workers enough so the state didn’t have to top them up? He doesn’t, because the system he’s criticising enables him to pay less, so he earns more, and saves more in his tax exile.

Illigal immigrants by the definition are illegal and are not on benefits so that is not what Jim was talking about.

Asylum seekers are those fleeing war and persecution - as with any system chances are there a probably a few misusing it, but the vast, vast majority aren't seeking asylum for economic reasons. If you're seeking asylum you can also only do this if you're physically in the country.

Would this cost be any greater than someone who was born and raised in the country following the same low skilled career path?

I agree that he is entitled to his opinion. I do think that considering his position he should be far more careful with his use of language, and I doubt he can’t see that for himself. I don’t accept that his choice of language was careless or accidental, but deliberate.

I didn't say it was as I know nothing about you. It is absolutely true that among some migrant communities criminal conviction rates are significantly higher than average.

The other crucial difference is that (unfortunately) a British born criminal cannot be removed from the country, whereas foreign born nationals who commit serious crime can (in theory) be removed from the country.

I’d have a lot more respect if he wasn’t being a tax exile living in the constituency of… erm… Monaco… and had not sacked a lot of long tenured low paid staff in the back office at man united

Because.. man of the people… am I right!!!

Ohhh the Envy is showing.

He has a self made fortune and keeps many in employment so hats off to the man

And with his self made fortune he can live wherever he wants in the World and pay the tax of any country he earns cash in.

Standard response, call someone horrible or heartless. Then make out all immigrants are doctors and nurses caring for British people and paying lots of tax.

Well it is horrible. Youre saying any immigrant has to apply to live here every 6 months and if they don't meet a certain criteria then they have to 'go home'.

If splitting up families, taking away security, making life harder for people isn't horrible I don't know what is.

It wasn’t my post, I was just pointing out that the response made to it was a typical leftie post. If a persons position is logical and reasonable they don’t need to make personal attacks, they can just present their position

But making all immigrants apply to live in the country every 6 months is the opposite of logical and reasonable, would cause uncertainly and hardship for millions. "

Let me spell this out for anyone with difficulty reading……

It

Wasn’t

My

Post!

So stop quoting me as such.

You don’t know what migrant community I may belong to. Do you know those migrants who “are more likely to be involved in criminality” sufficiently to make such a comment?

I can read and understand crime stats if that's what you mean. Is an Afghan or Somali man more likely to commit a serious sexual offence than a Polish or German man? Absolutely.

I believe a table was published recently stating exactly what you’ve asked. I can’t remember what country was top, might have been Afghanistan, but the table was topped by Afghanistan, Sudan, Somalia, Syria, Iraq, Iran and a Bangladesh as I recall.

It was a table of percentage of criminality per 1000 people. I think it listed 60 countries or origin and Britain was something like 57th.

Eh, no I haven’t. You were maintaining the “immigrants being more likely to engage in criminality” argument. I just pointed out how such a sweeping statement is wholly inaccurate and misleading, to the point of the generalised claim itself being dishonest.

The British Government can control immigration if it chooses to do so. His statement was provocative, used incendiary language, and plain wrong. Being exceptionally wealthy doesn’t give him a pass.

What if as a result of the likes of poisonous rhetoric from the likes of Ratcliff, Farage, the Mail etc, my immigrant partner and kids grow up in a more hostile environment where they're more afraid to speak their language in public?

What if I enjoy the diversity that living with people from different cultures brings?

What if I have children who meet and fall in love with immigrants?

Just in the context of this specific conversation, I don't particularly believe that a billionaire, tax avoiding exile has Britain's best interests at heart and it's insulting to suggest that because I have a different view that I am weak.

There are 55ish countries who’s nationals or people of those countries origin are more likely to commit crime than British people. It’s an official government figure. I saw it in a graphic form, a table, so I couldn’t post it here even if I found it. But I’m sure if you looked you could find this

No.

He said "many", not "all". That's where he qualified it.

"You don’t know what migrant community I’d be identified from, so you can’t have any idea if I’m more or less likely to engage in criminality than… you. Using your statement I’m more likely, but you’ve got zero evidence to back that up."

There are plenty of stats showing that *on average* immigrants commit more crime than natives. If the only thing we know about you is that you're an immigrant, then the stats show you are more likely to commit a crime.

This isn't a personal attack aimed at you. We have no idea whether you actually will commit a crime or not. But with almost no information about you, if we have to make the determination, you fall into the box of people with a slightly higher risk.

"In debates such as this accuracy and precision are vital."

Then give us a detailed history and a full police record, and we'll come up with more accurate statements.

Radcliffe speaking on behalf of the nation

He speaks for nobody other than himself! Having a large bank balance doesn’t suddenly make you the voice of the nation.

Ohhh the Envy is showing.

No envy here.

He has a self made fortune and keeps many in employment so hats off to the man

But despite his claims about in the UK interest, he manufactures his Grenedier cars in… France!

And with his self made fortune he can live wherever he wants in the World and pay the tax of any country he earns cash in.

He has “migrated” from the UK to Monaco where he will pay ZERO income tax as an “immigrant”. Hypocrisy, right?

It’s okay for the working man or woman to work, pay tax, and contribute to the exchequer, but I’m a billionaire so I’ll sit out in the sun and make totally inaccurate and misleading statements to inflame the situation, without contributing.

Regarding immigration I would like to see any immigrants with less than 15 years living in the UK removed or given 6 monthly visas requiring renewal every 6 months proving full information.

You’d have done well in Germany in the 1930’s. You sound like you should be joining Reform UK, if not already in it. Brexit has had a dramatic effect on overseas workers, in the NHS in particular, and we’re paying for that now.

Manchester, Birmingham and London are totally polluted by immigration and up here in Scotland Glasgow is becoming similar.

Absolute far-right racist bullshit! Using the term “polluted” in reference to people is beyond disgusting.

Get them all sent back to their country of origin.

Think on that the next time you’re getting NHS treatment.

As someone who works in the NHS I agree that many of my colleagues were either born in different countries or have parents born overseas.

The major difference is they arrived in the UK legally not illegally and that's the main difference.

Have no problem people from anywhere in the world applying through the proper channels for work visas but do have a problem with economic migrants using asylum as their ticket.

We could always do one in, one out.

Migrant in.

Lazy, bone idle Brit out.

Seems fair. 🤣🤣🤣

If you're seeking asylum you can also only do this if you're physically in the country."

From my understanding of someone who actually works in the Home Office. The vast majority of the people who arrive illegally and claim asylum are actually economic migrants, mainly young men.

Do they have shit lives in their country, absolutely they do, but having a shit life is not an asylum claim no matter how sad.

The main problem seems to be the time taken considering their claim, they get settled in UK and it becomes more and more difficult to remove as the years pass by.

Add on appeals and the time just ticks by, they develop relationships, have kids, work cash in hand etc.

I may be wrong but I thought the asylum rules were you claimed asylum in the first country of safety, so coming from France means you have departed a country of safety, you may not like mainland Europe but that's not the point.

So basically YOU have no proof, no evidence, no links and nothing to back up your nonsense accusations that Sir Jim Ratcliffe avoids paying UK tax.

If that was the case then do you not think that every news station in the UK and every newspaper report would be all over this, especially when he employs 3500 people in the UK.

Maybe you should apologise for your accusations towards him

As far as I'm aware there isn't a way to avoid paying tax on income earned in the UK no matter where you live.

If someone can tell me how I'll let my accountant know

"Well he literally changed his tax domicile from Hampshire to Monaco to avoid paying income and property taxes."

Do you have evidence that he definitely moved to Monaco to avoid tax, and not because it's a nice country with good weather, a high standard of living, and an almost negligible crime rate?

Or are you just making assumptions based on your own prejudice?

There's no (legal) way to evade paying tax on income earned in the UK, but there are ways to earn money without it being classed as UK income. That's what "tax avoidance" is, arranging things so that you are not legally required to pay tax.

You would need to speak to a person who knows how to build a commercial enterprise. They are very few and far between, and usually responsible for driving economic growth through employment and supply chains.

Given that the UKs top income tax rate is 45%, he'd need to be earning almost £8bn a year.

But that figure is obviously nonsense as the same article claims his entire net worth is £17bn.

It appears the saving is on future earnings as opposed to current (£21bn est) wealth.

Chris Dawson from here in Plymouth also moved to Monaco for same reasons.

Both have started businesses and made good. Radcliffe a chemical engineer, Dawson left Plymstock school at 14 with nothing and hasn’t even got an email address as he can’t read. I’m sat on the fence what ‘tax the rich’ should mean, as then they leave and you’ve got 100% of nothing

If he's to make the savings claimed by The Guardian, then yes. If they were earned in the UK, then he'd have to pay UK tax, which would make the Guardian story untrue.

Reading some of the posts, some people seem to be linking how much tax he has paid and where he now lives with whether he should be making comments on UK immigration. Why can't he have an opinion just because he has moved to another country, where he supports himself and is not a burden to that country. If it's to do with tax then surely all those that live of benefits and not paying hardly anything should also not voice an opinion. People shouldn't voice opinions about trump unless they pay US tax. It's a bit ridiculous and I suspect Radcliffe has paid more UK tax than all the posters here combined

If I'm incorrect the rules should be changed and stop a general shopping around for the country of choice.

If you are correct then I can see why Farage is so popular.

"I'll check with my friends son, I'm sure he mentioned some convention that does state something about first safe port."

It's not in the 1951 Convention, but subsequent legal judgements have come to the conclusion that a refugee must travel "directly" to the place where they claim asylum. It's accepted that a 6 month walk across an entire continent crossing several borders counts as a "direct" journey. However if that person stops for 6 months in one country, that doesn't count as "direct".

There's a whole slew of complex judgements, which means that each case needs to be considered on its individual merits.

Before Brexit I thought the Dublin Convention / Regulation was there to curtail asylum shopping.

Not too sure what has happened since Brexit.

Not really too bothered either but I think it's fair and reasonable for people to claim asylum in the first safe port and not choose a country.

If I was fleeing persecution with my family I would be so relieved to reach a safe country and wouldn't feel compelled to shop around.

Thanks for responding.

Fighting age men feeling and leaving the women and children to face the onslaught. Why would anyone want people like that in their community?

But of course there is no persecution. Amnesty international has 1500 ish cases on their books but there’s 5 million people in Western Europe claiming they have been prosecuted.

It's there to prevent double-dipping. It basically says that if a person applies for asylum in an EU country, that country is responsible for dealing with them. This means that if the person goes on to apply in another EU country, they get sent back to wherever they first applied to be dealt with.

Since Brexit we haven't been able to send asylum seekers back to EU countries, and they haven't been able to send them back to us. In most years of the Dublin Regulations we accepted more returns than we made, so Brexit has reduced the number of asylum seekers coming to the UK through legal means. But the numbers were always small, never more than 2,500 arrivals per year.

Christ, it's as if our governments, of all stripes, are giving Mr Farage a shed load of ammunition to shoot them down.

All these persecuted single guys arriving in boats feeling every other EU country can't offer them a safe haven.

I'd be interested to know what is on offer for asylum seekers in every other EU country, just pretending we are still part of EU.

How does the housing, emergency accommodation, weekly spending cash, utilities, healthcare, dentists, schools etc etc compare.

What is it that makes a single guy travel, work and move across several safe countries and then come over a dangerous shipping channel to enter a small island floating on the edge of a very wealthy, safe continent.

Probably already know why.

Its my understanding he pays UK taxes on his UK enterprises.

If he lives in Monaco then he won't pay tax on his personal income while there.

I can see absolutely nothing wrong with that.

I would imagine he has paid his UK taxes on his personal income when he lived in UK until his late 60's.

He may think he's done his bit for UK and decided he would leave all the financial burden of raising taxes to everyone who trawls sex sites and the equivalent all day.

Business pay corporation tax in the country they are registered. I believe many of his businesses are registered in the UK so will pay corporation tax here.

He can’t just take money out of a business. It either has to be paid to him as a salary or as a dividend.

There are specific rules regarding where income is earned with regard to where income tax is paid. It’s not as straightforward as one might think

I have a few problems with what Jimmy said.

One the fact he is a squillionaire and living in a tax haven and spouting this divisive bullshit kinda sticks in my graw

Secondly what he said was total bollox, the UK is not being colonised, there are areas in the UK where there is a a large foreign population but that it and is the same for most progressive countries

A colony Is a territory governed by an independent country, last time I checked Starmer was still in charge. For the record the UK doesn't have a great record when it comes to colonising other countries, historically it's assumed controlled of countries for its own benefit.

So, Jimmy pipe down and get your facts straight

I love the way the left do this. When it comes to accepting subsidies, everything his companies do is down to him personally. But when it comes to paying taxes, suddenly his companies don't count and it's just his personal affairs that matter.

Ratcliffe is 70, which means that he's been paying taxes for at least 45 years. Given his wealth and the size of his companies he'll have paid billions over the years.

Now he's retiring to somewhere sunny. His companies are still staying here and will still continue to pay taxes just as they always have. But he no longer lives here, and no longer benefits from the provisions of the state, so he no longer has to pay personal taxes here. What's the problem with that?

I think one little google search will debunk this claim. For example the £120 million public money for investment in a Grangemouth plant during 2025

"I have a few problems with what Jimmy said.

"

I see you as living in a fools paradise. Look at how many Germans in ww2 held France it was as little as 100k now let that sink in. Give half the current illegals guns and it’s over for the uk.

Here we go again. The fact that the government invested in one of Ratcliffe's companies is counted as personal income by those who wish to claim that he's not a self-made billionaire.

But ignoring the above, that money was handed over less than 2 months ago. I'm pretty sure that Ratcliffe was a billionaire before then.

Ratcliffe has been warning of the catastrophic effect of high energy prices on the oil and chemical industries for some time.

I'm fairly sure that public money has gone into building his business, and by extension of that his personal wealth for a long time Gilfach.

You will use a lot of the products being manufactured by these companies, it is the end consumer, you and I that shoulders the cost.

Can't have a debate here without someone mentioning the war!

Seeing as you mentioned the war, what about this narrative ?

"Give half the illegals football boots and England could win a world cup - first since 66"

Also, let's be realistic where they going to get guns from? Guns are available in Walmart in USA and I don't see the mexicans organising a coup or colonising Arizona

Good luck living in a country with no oil or chemical industry, although to be fair that seems to be official Labour Party policy now.
