Japanese General Election 🇯🇵

Always amazed how little coverage elections in major foreign countries get, apart from the obsession with the US of course.

Big result in Japan this weekend where the ruling party LPD led by Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi is on course to win by a landslide.

The country's first female prime minister has been re-elected on a strong conservative platform, hostile to immigration and generally sympathetic to Trump.

With right wing populists leading the polls in UK, France and Germany, the political zeitgeist in the democratic world seems clear.

I’m not too surprised with this from Japan, I feel she's a Trump figure for the Japanese!

I doubt tech is there solutions as they seemed to be stuck tech wise before their bubble burst in the 90s. it’s a country that still relies on older tech like fax machines and pagers.

It’s also quite a homogeneous society, which sometimes means issues can get attributed to outsiders (immigrants and sometimes tourists) more easily. During COVID, for instance, there were claims in some media that Western speech patterns spread more droplets, which came across as a bit of scapegoating.

That said, I visited Japan last year and really liked it. It’s a beautiful place, and everyone we met was polite and welcoming, at least in my experience.

That has been true for awhile. I was looking for robotics companies to invest in most of the top robotic companies were in Japan. They even built robots to clean railway tracks.

They have been very much anti immigration for a long time because their culture has lots of expectations on individuals. Also, their experience with tourists has probably put them off immigration. They recently cancelled their cherry blossom festival because of tourists.

That's very sad about the festival.
