No deep state but dont belive any party is in charge if the country,the real leaders of the country are the civil service, its down to them if stuff gets dine ir not, the likes of starmer, kemi, farage or ed davey are just the public face

I don't think this counts as civil servants. The country has a problem with unelected quangos acting independently. Successive governments say they want to get get rid of many of the quangos, but that doesn't seem to be the case.

According to an analysis done by the Cabinet Office, there were 302 ALBs (or quangos) in the UK in 2022/23, 244 of which were non-departmental public bodies. ALBs employed just over 390,800 staff.

so you hinwstley think whoever wins elections is in charge? If the civil service want to drag there feet iver simething they may not agree with then they can make sure it gets kicked into the long grass, it is funny though thinking partys have any real power, partys come and go the civil service is always there

Were the previous 14 years' of austerity and Brexit the results from this deep state within the civil service that really governs?

I don’t think the Civil Service are “in charge” as in there is an active cabal of senior civil servants deciding what does and does not happen as part of a master plan.

I do think that there is the sheer weight of inertia of bureaucracy that drastically limits what can actually be done and means that any meaningful change never happens.

It is not malicious but it is pernicious.

A lot of the issue is that politicians often don’t want to take decisions and so punting it to a quango or committee is pitched as “good governance” when in fact it is an abdication of responsibility. Do that for long enough and you end up with the amorphous mess we now have.
