22 Councils Cancel Democracy

So 22 English Councils have disgracefully cancelled their elections due this year, some of which had been cancelled last year as well.

At a time when trust in politicians is at an all time low this seems like a disaster decision, and an electoral gift for Reform.

Also how can these councils continue to levy taxes without being accountable to their voters ?

Has this affected you, and are you bothered?

The cuts in funding from Central government in the period 2010 - 2020 are reported to be about 24 to 28% per head..

They're not exactly rolling in spare cash, unless it seems to buy flags..

Plymouth council have gone £13m over budget on the vanity ‘box’ cinema, pushing down prices at two other cinemas. And the city centre revamp has gone from original cost of £12.7m to £36m plus the illegal felling of trees.

I read a northern council spent £174,000 planting nine trees and Birmingham council spent a million on non clean air compliant vehicles.

These people are running budgets and wasting money. Will be the same all over the country

He should face the appropriate punishment for this. I read it was not intentional but to me it's still his responsibility no matter who he delegates it to. What was also mentioned is that due to his outside earnings he has not claimed any personal expenses. If true then maybe all MP's who have outside earnings should also not claim expenses

Well, the turn out in local elections is often around about a third of the electorate so in that sense he has a point.

I’d imagine those who complain at the banning never vote anyway.

But let’s assume you’re right. And the policy is..

“We can’t afford to have the elections this year that we also cancelled last year”

This isn’t a party in the park or a pride march that’s being cancelled. It’s democracy.

We’re slowly losing freedom of speech

We’re losing trial by jury

We’re foregoing the rights of victims of crime in favour of the criminals

And now we’re losing the right to vote.

Last year they said we’ll do it next year. Well this year is next year.

In my opinion this is a deliberate act by Labour to cause civil unrest so they can declare marshal law and blame it all on Farage.

The government of North Korea may put armed enforcers on the streets to keep its citizens in line, but the UK?

Hopefully if it came to that, Trump would send a fleet of ships here too

I really struggle with how Labour has any support left. Saying inflation is down is irrelevant when it’s still nearly double the rate they inherited. Shouting about “continuing grown” when it’s at 0.1% and in the US it’s more like 4% at a time when they are reducing the population and we’re adding a close to a million to ours year on year. Starmer must be pulling his hair out as to why there’s no grown to speak of when the population is growing so rapidly with all these doctors and engineers.

Yes a couple of figures can be put into a certain context and made to sound good, but so much corruption, u turns, sleaze, massive tax increases with nothing to show for it, closing down food production to put solar panels and wind farms on the land but pay to have them turned off. Eroding freedom of speech, abolishing jury trials with no logic as to how it will help solve the problems in the courts, two tier justice, protecting pedos etc and as this thread shows, cancelling elections.

How can any elected politician either local or national, think that is ok?

My opinion hasn’t changed since he started calling anyone who is to the right of Diane Abbott a far right Nazi. I believe he is deliberately pushing us to civil disobedience so he can declare martial law and cancel all elections until “order is restored”. Which could be never.

Our best option seems to be to ride the storm and when he’s lost power, arrest him for treason. It’s just a shame they stopped hanging traitors
