The government is reported to be poised to announce a climbdown on forthcoming increases to the business rates bill faced by pubs.

Treasury officials say they have recognised the financial difficulties facing many pubs after sharp rises in the rateable value of their premises.

The move follows pressure from landlords and industry groups that included more than 1,000 pubs banning Labour MPs from their premises.

Rachel Reeves scaled back business rate discounts that have been in force since the pandemic from 75% to 40% - and announced that there would be no discount at all from April.

This should be welcomed by the licenced trade and customers

Good news on the face of it. But more borrowing on the cards to replace the lost revenue

When is a climb down not really a climb down

When something is done for the purpose of lowering rates, but because of revaluation purposes and escalation factors, meant the overall package would have seen them pay more

So I am glad that they have seen this and made adjustments… I thought people on all sides would have welcomed this

Terra Firma

Another u-turn show another poorly thought out policy.

The upset caused by this is not only affecting pubs but all small business in properties, and they are making drastic changes now to compensate for the upcoming extra costs, including laying off staff.

The money that would have been accounted for now is lost, so where is the shortfall coming from? Tax rises and borrowing that will again wipe out the headroom Reeves had.

The idea a u-turn is not a bad thing is flawed, a responsible government would have applied a level of due diligence ahead of any announcements to ensure the policy landing properly.

To me this is the government supporting a faling business, if the government can do this should the government also support village shops in remote communities.

The big problem with this is if you have a village pub you need support posably, but if you have a pub in a university city you posably do not need the support. But all pubs will benifit the the same at a cost to the tax payer.
