Wes Streeting testing Starmer?

Wes Streeting has provided another hint of his intentions to lead the labour party with comments that support the idea of rejoining EU customs union, contrary to the direction of Starmer.

It is a very interesting move and one that provides powerful routes of attack. The first is exposing Starmer, who looks like he is stuck in the trenches on the idea of rejoining the a custome union and will not consider alternatives that could benefit the country at a time of need. It also amplifies Starmer's recent pushback on the idea when he claimed it would unravel the deals done with Trump, particularly the car manufacturing deal that would benefit Jaguar Land Rover.

If i'm reading the mood of the country correctly, the resulting changes through our EU exit have not been well received. Lib Dems and many more people who may have u-turned are looking for a link back to the EU, and are there to be picked up as voters, those voters could actually neutralise the Farage effect.

Is Starmer correct in holding historic red wall demands firm, or is he wildly out of touch?

It is an interesting development if he actually goes for it. Joining the customs union would both gain votes but also loose votes. Even if they gain more than they loose, will it be worth it, especially as certain other parties will no doubt use it as a line if attack. Labour or at least Starmer were clear before the GE that they would not rejoin either the customs union or single market. Given the amount of support they have lost over the running of the economy i'm not sure the public will forgive such a U turn. Not sure it will neutralise the Farage effect personally. At present although they have a full list if policies they focus on immigration as this is the hot topic. Giving him another hot topic could be counter productive. If they do go down that road I suspect the lib Dems could see their support reduce

Another major policy that wasn't in the Manifesto ? Yes, that will go down a treat !

Streeting is one of the more competent Labour Ministers (a low bar tbf) but if this is his big idea to rescue them from electoral oblivion then he's sadly as deluded as Starmer.
