50,000 delegates are flying to Brazil for next weeks COP 30 climate conference.

The UK delegation is reported to be 470, including 354 from government, plus Prince William, and security entourage. Over 600 people being likely. Total cost to the taxpayer has not been disclosed.

The large size of the UK delegation has attracted some criticism, particularly regarding the carbon footprint generated by the travel to the Amazon location, estimated that the 470 UK delegates are set to burn 48 million miles worth of carbon attending the event, equivalent of 23,000 round trip flights to Paris.

Apparently 257 acres have actually been deforested for the construction of a new four-lane highway which cuts through tens of thousands of acres of protected Amazon rainforest is being built for the COP30 climate summit of the COP30 venue.

Some wealthier European countries have also indicated they may skip this year's global climate talks after being quoted prices for accommodation exceeding $500 per person per night.

With the autumn budget looming, is spending millions on UK attendance worthwhile, could the UKs attendance not have been conducted via zoom.

In addition to the cost the collective carbon footprint of the event must be substantial.

Why do they never hold these junkets somewhere shitty. Next to a big coal fired power station or oil refinery might focus their minds more.

Cop 26 in Glasgow

They were trying to prove how green we were going so people attending were getting rolled up in electric cars

BUT

Those staying at gleneagles had a problem?

No electric charge points for the cars

Solution

Bring I. Diesel generators to charge the cars!!

It’s a fecking joke they are all on a jolly I’m sure with technology they could all meet in a hall in their own country and do it ?? But where’s the fun in that !!

Indeed. Covid and lockdowns proved that the world can still turn and meetings can be held remotely on Zoom and other similar mediums.

.

I'd start with the Houses of Parliament. There is no need to get all those MP's together in a single place for a glorified and archaic shouting match.

Imagine the money saved on not needing the building. People can sort out their own lunches at home, so no need for a subsidised bar. (And drinking alcohol at work, really ? Is this the 1970's ?)

Costa Blanca Spain...

Just one big taxpayer funded jolly.

5 star hotels, lots of nice restaurants, plenty of sights to see, maybe even sand between their toes on Copacabana.

Meaningless joint statement issued at the end with ever so serious faces. Then back on the big silver bird with a few new fridge magnets and halo well and truly polished.

Worthing

All this = more cash for them and higher energy bills for us with potential blackouts.

Costa Blanca Spain...

Oh and just to add to the meaningless.

The big 3 world polluters China, India and the USA couldn't be arsed to turn up at all.

It's a bit like Lichtenstein, San Marino and Andorra having a meeting to end the war in Ukraine.

For those that insist they must attend make them pay for themselves including transport, hotels, food, drink etc and give them each a large environmental tax bill for causing so much pollution

Not sure how true it is but some media quoted Starmer as saying the UK is 'all in' on green energy nonsense. Disheartening the rot extends to the very top of the monarchy.

We wonder how much longer ever increasing prices, high taxes, and poorer quality of life has to go before people start an uprising. We're more likely to emmigrate as the UK is not somewhere we want to retire in with how it's heading.

I’m with re optimist above

This event should not be held at expensive venues. If I remember correctly at the end of COP29 there were hours/days of negotiations with the poorer/ more affected countries

While at home Reeves is about to cut some of millibands net zero, rumours of EV drivers to be punished in the budget, and 15 million dwellings that will fail the proposed and deferred higher EPC rules. And let’s not get started on imported food grown and harvested on third world wages travelling thousands of sea miles in diesel powered ships, while uk farmers have been hit with cessation of BPS through Brexit and labours 20% iht land grab
